Members of the Griffith Employment Relations and Human Resource Management Society (GERMS) recently organised a highly successful Graduate Program Workshop at the Gold Coast campus. Industry professionals from the public and private sectors presented on a number of topics relating to graduate employment, before networking with event participants.

Speakers included: Katrina Vagg from the Griffith Careers and Employment Service; professional coaching specialist Annette Hurley; Craig Kingston from engineering firm Thiess; Ray Clarice, Bronya Dixon and Griffith graduate Belinda from the Department of Justice and Attorney General; and members from public speaking organisation Toastmasters.

Katrina gave students advice on the importance of networking, resume writing, transferable skills, and how to make the most of Griffith's Careers and Employment Service whilst at University. Professional coaching specialist Annette Hurley advised students on the importance of knowing oneself before applying for graduate positions, and how to reach ones’ full potential.

Thiess recruiter Craig Kingston gave insight into applying for graduate programs and positions in the private sector, detailing the selection process and sharing his humorous experiences as a recruiter over the years. HR specialists Ray Clarice and Bronya Dixon from the Justice and Attorney General Department pfovided advice on how to apply for graduate positions in government, and Griffith graduate Belinda related her experiences as part of a graduate program.

Finally, members from Toastmasters enlightened students on the importance of confidence and public speaking skills when applying for graduate positions. Member Phoebe revealed that Toastmasters often welcome new members who have experienced confidence issues when applying for graduate positions, and work with them to develop their public speaking skills and improve their employment prospects.
