The intersection of Creek Road and Pine Mountain Road carries approximately 40,000 vehicles per day and is a congested and dangerous traffic blackspot, according to Councillor Adrian Schrinner.

The intersection, which sits on the boundary of four suburbs - Carindale, Carina Heights, Mt Gravatt East and Mansfield - will be upgraded with longer turning lanes on Creek Road and better coordination of turning movements on all four sides.

Once completed, the length of the turning lanes on Creek Road will be tripled to help reduce congestion.

Cr Schrinner said that engineers had calculated that the safety and congestion-reducing benefits of the project would be 6 times greater than the cost.

"This upgrade has a benefit-cost ratio of 6 to 1 and will bring major improvements in safety as well as reducing congestion," he said.

The project will be delivered by Brisbane City Council in partnership with the Commonwealth Government.  Under Lord Mayor Campbell Newman, 15 years worth of road upgrades are being completed in the current 4 year term.

Cr Schrinner said that he had been pushing for this intersection to be upgraded for many years.

“The upgrade is great news for the thousands of local residents who use this busy intersection everyday,” he said.

The trees were planted during January and February to revegetate the Toronto Road site that was purchased by Council in early 2009 through the Bushland Acquisition Program.

"Council invested $1.57 million to purchase this property due to its environmental significance," he said.

The purchase of this site contributes to the consolidation of habitat for koalas within the Tingalpa Creek Reserve which is vital to maintain their existing population in Brisbane.

By May, Council will be halfway to its goal of planting two million trees when the one millionth tree is planted.

The Bushland Acquisition Program is funded through the Bushland Preservation Levy which all ratepayers pay to help protect our city's green areas for future generations. The Levy raises approximately $14 million per year, all of which is re-invested into purchasing and saving bushland.

Brisbane residents are great recyclers and actively use their yellow-top bins, however, there is still room for improvement.  Our landfill contains a large amount of organic green waste (30-40%) which can also be re-used.

“Waste falling out of vehicles is making a real mess along roads like Old Cleveland Road and Tilley Road,” Cr Schrinner said.

“I am very concerned at the scale of this growing problem."

Common roadside litter includes large cardboard boxes, polystyrene packaging, items of furniture, and even white goods like washing machines

“These large items are not only an eyesore – they can also be major traffic hazards if they fall onto the road in the path of other vehicles,” Cr Schrinner said.

“Waste that falls on the road can also pose a threat to the local environment as it is washed into local waterways."

To secure loads, ensure the load is covered with a tarpaulin so that no debris can fall out.

Ensure all restraints are in good condition and do not show signs of fraying, cuts or other damage.

Where possible, evenly distribute the load, ensuring that it is secured to prevent movement when driving. It is best to re-check the restraints shortly after beginning the journey.

To help clean-up our streets, Council Officers can issue fines for anyone caught littering. Fines include:
• $200 for general littering
• $300 for littering from a vehicle
• $400 for dangerous littering
• $1650 for large items such as fridges or couches

Residents who witness littering or illegal dumping are urged to immediately report the matter to the Council 24 hour hotline on 3403 8888.

Since the project began in January, repair and upgrade work has commenced in the main auditorium, including the dome.

This work includes the completion of the geotechnical investigation and piece-by-piece removal of the incredible 4,747 pipe organ by specialists. In addition, structural and fire safety work in the auditorium and grand copper dome is well underway.

The generosity and support of residents has helped make it possible to save Brisbane’s iconic City Hall. The donations received are greatly appreciated and funds raised are already being put to good use on the project.

As part of the Blood Drive, four Red Cross mobile donor vans were set-up at Citipointe Church (formerly known as Christian Outreach Centre), off Scrub Road / Wecker Road.

Councillor Schrinner, who was one of the blood donors, said that it was great to see so many people offering to help out by giving the gift of blood.

"I commend Citipointe for partnering with Red Cross and the local community to organise this Blood Drive," Cr Schrinner said.

"It's a wonderful initiative and will literally help to save many lives," he said.

According to Red Cross figures, around one in 30 people donate blood, but sooner or later, one in three of us will need blood.
