Happy New Year! Welcome to the first edition of Transforming Business, the Griffith Business School Alumni Network newsletter, for 2015.

We are very excited to provide Griffith Business School Alumni Network with a full and exciting events calendar again in 2015.

To assist us in organising events that are of interest to you, please complete our short (only 6 questions!) online events survey. Your feedback will allow us to create a calendar of events suitable to our alumni. After all it is 'your' event calendar.

Speaking of exciting events, Griffith is proud to host 'TEDxGriffithUniversity' at our Gold Coast campus on Wednesday 18 February 2015. This independent TEDx event is operated under license from TED. The event will include a number of speakers including GBS alumni, who will discuss the topic 'Knowledge is....'. Space, the Olympics, entrepreneurship, tourism, surfing and design are just some of the topics that will feature at the inaugural TEDxGriffithUniversity.  This is an invitation only event, however there will be satellite events and a live stream to accompany it; details of these will be announced soon. Please refer to the TEDxGriffithUniversity Facebook, Twitter and website for more information.

The GBS Alumni Advisory Group is looking forward to a productive year, working with key staff in the School to develop our Alumni Network through our Alumni Engagement Plan. We were pleased to welcome four new members to this Group in 2014 and would like to extend further in 2015. If you are interested in shaping our Alumni Network please submit an expression of interest to gbs-alumni@griffith.edu.au.  You can find out more about the Group and meet the members on our website.

I look forward to seeing many of you at our events and activities throughout the year.

Best wishes,

Simon BottomleyHe used his commerce degree to help grow the business to become a national leader in manhole covers and grates for the construction industry. The company is now part of EJ which is the largest manufacture of these products in the world. Simon is General Manager of Asia Pacific for the group.

Simon credits Griffith with giving him a passion for marketing and business. He says "Griffith gave me the skill set to back myself and the courage to mix it in the real world of business. I attended the Nathan campus, so every time I go bush walking, it reminds me of the Griffith campus and I feel relaxed and happy due to my memories of a great learning experience."

Election 2015: Queensland economy analysed

As the Queensland election campaign approaches full tilt, with claims and counter claims in abundance, one Griffith University researcher has cut through the political rhetoric to analyse some hard stats.

Professor Fabrizio Carmignani, Head of the Department of Accounting, Finance and Economics at Griffith Business School, has cast the forensic eye of an economist on the state's wellbeing under the LNP government and compared this analysis with the terms immediately before the Newman era when Anna Bligh led a Labor Party government.

Griffith offers 10,000 undergraduate places

More than 10,000 prospective students received their offer to study at Griffith University in 2015 in mid January.

The 'main round' of university placement offers were made through QTAC (Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre) and UAC (University Admissions Centre -  NSW), delivering good news to thousands of aspiring students.

Academic Provost Professor Adam Shoemaker said the volume of offers from Griffith reflected strong demand for the University's education programs.

Election 2015: Analysis of early exchanges

With a quick-fire Queensland election campaign already near the end of week two, one Griffith University researcher considers the early exchanges.

Professor Anne Tiernan from Griffith's School of Government and International Relations has been looking at the impact of the early election call, the 'symbolic' campaigning that characterised week one and the difference between the leading parties' campaigning styles.
