Matt's Wrap:
Papua New Guinea: machine installation

Another successful Sign Master Router and Laminator install, this time in Papua New Guinea!

I've travelled to many places over the years and must say PNG was very different. It has an Island style beauty but also a harsh and hard undertone with all the secure compounds and what seems a very large gap between rich and poor. The people are great and friendships made will last.

It began with unpacking and positioning of the machine, as the forklift struggled man power came to rescue with plenty of willing bodies to help. The ingenuity of the staff was great!

Language was a barrier as training began, but after a few days and many kilos of me sweated away it all started coming together.

The install now complete, we went straight into production starting with a 3D lettered back illuminated fascia made with Perspex and v-cut APC which came out spot-on first time.

It was a whirlwind week in PNG and I'd like to really thank Craig from Grafitti Signs for all his hospitality.

Cheers,

Matt

Tech Tips: Setting roller pressure on cold laminators

Last issue we covered how to set the roller pressure on thermal laminators (click here if you missed it!). This time we have some advice for those of you with cold laminators...

Wide format cold laminating is a very simple process, however you would be surprised how many people get it wrong!

Aside from operator error, unbalanced rollers are the most common cause of laminating failures and immense frustration.

If you are experiencing constant tracking and / or creasing of prints whilst laminating, your roller pressure may be unbalanced.

To begin with, it is essential your machine has large diameter rollers (120 - 130mm) which are naturally very heavy and require minimal pressure.  The natural weight of the roller will provide the best finish, with problems only occurring when too much pressure is applied causing tracking and inconsistency in finishing.

Whilst every machine is different and every operator has a different way of setting up and checking the roller pressure the best way to set roller pressure is by feel.

This involves isolating the machines power (unplugging it), removing both side covers and actually checking the load being applied to the roller via the springs or pins. With the rollers closed, feel the bearing mount around each end of the top roller inside the cabinet, they should feel the same. If one side is loose, then some adjustment is required.

Remember to only make small adjustments until both sides feel similar. Different models of machines are adjusted via different means; please feel free to contact us to help talk you through it if you need help.

Another way to double check you have got it right is to then insert two pieces of paper or media about A4 in size into each side of the rollers near each end. Close the rollers on the pieces and then pull them to try and remove them, the force required to remove them should be even; if not the roller pressure is not even. These processes can seem hard to get right at first but with small adjustments, once right, your machine will run brilliantly.

Finally, most machines (especially ours) come with factory set roller pressure. Different systems control roller balance in different machines and very minor adjustments can make a BIG DIFFERENCE!
