Event Poppy

Are you nervous about attending your first HBWN event? We have all been there! At every event we have members who are our "Event Poppy" and wear a pink lanyard. They will make you feel at home.

The Event Poppy initiative has been introduced at all HBWN events to avoid this situation and promote inclusiveness for all of our members. New members and guests are introduced to our Event Poppies as a friendly transition to meeting and networking with other members, without the awkwardness!
You can identify our Event Poppies by their pink lanyards and a welcoming smile.

Interested in being an Event Poppy?
We encourage members and guests to tick the Event Poppy box when registering for your next event

It is a fabulous way to meet new people and help others feel welcome to the network.

Hello Friend,

Welcome to our newsletter. Soon we will be moving into the second half of 2016, which brings us two exciting events - Luminosity Youth Summit in July and The Greater Port Macquarie Business Awards in August.

Both events are a time to celebrate, and the HBWN is proud to support these events. Luminosity celebrates youth, opportunity and the future. While the business awards provide us with a chance to look back over the last 12 months at our wins and learn where we got things right and what we need to learn.

To all the business women out there, consider nominating your business or a business that has wowed you over the past year. Many business women don't nominate themselves, because they don't think they have anything to crow about. Encourage your business colleagues to put their hat in the ring and while you're at it, put yours in there too, because magic happens when we get outside our comfort zone.

The HBWN aims to encourage, empower and educate business women in the Hastings region. We passionately believe it is the right all of women to hold their head high like the tall poppy as they strive for business success. It's for these reasons that we continue to sponsor the Woman In Business Award and future business women through Luminosity.

We hope these events inspire all businesswomen to reach for success in their chosen field.

Kind regards
Karen Archer
President
HBWN Committee

Event Wrap February-April
International Women's Day - 6 March 2016

Our annual Hastings Heroine event started in 2010 and has grown into a fantastic community event. It is both an award ceremony for local women in our region and a fundraiser for the Domestic and Family Violence Specialist Services.

The event corresponds with International Women's Day and follows their theme for the year. This year "Pledge for Parity" encourages everyone to work to close the gender gap.

The community nominated 11 outstanding women this year who have made significant contributions in creating balance between genders. The Hastings Heroine Award 2016 was awarded to three local women. Congratulations to Genna Johnson, Rhonda Radley and Alex-Glen Holmes.

(L-R) Genna Johnson, Rhonda Radley and Alex-Glen Holmes

Our biggest IWD event to date!  A subcommittee worked to make this year's event bigger and better, and they did an outstanding job. Over 170 people attended the breakfast event and more than $9,000 was raised for Domestic and Family Violence Specialist Services. Thank you to the IWD committee for volunteering your time. We appreciate your dedication.

Professional Development Launch - March Event

Thank you to (L-R) Kelly Lamb, Tanya Simmons, Liesa Davies, Leslie Williams MP, Elizabeth McGregor for being a panel member and thank you to Barbara Smith for facilitating the Vital Voices panel discussion.

What an inspirational morning! The panel discussion kicked off the 2016 Professional Development Program with many stories and advice about leadership. The leaders shared challenges they experienced throughout their career, how they overcame adversity and how making mistakes made them a stronger leader.

Speed Networking - April Event

 Jean Rose and Lee Turner

Ingrid Weissmann and Peta Watters

We had a great time sharing our elevator speech and meeting many of the new members. We were all a bit nervous to begin but relaxed as the event progressed. Practise really does make perfect.

Monthly Coffee Catch Up

Our monthly Coffee Catch Up is free and open to everyone. It is a great way to meet new people in a casual setting.

Please join us at the next Coffee Catch Up on Tuesday, 31 May.

Last Tuesday of every month 10am @ Aqua Lounge Westport Club!

Another fun Coffee Catch Up in April at Aqua Lounge with Karen Fischmann, Sarah Purnell, Karen Archer, Deb Ashmore, Veronica Lind, Kylie Morris, Sue Buttsworth and Mel Haverfield.

HBWN In The Community

As a network, the HBWN gives back to the community in many ways.

Committee members represent our membership within the region at various events such as the Port Chamber of Commerce, Rotary, Business Hub, Economic Development Steering Group and Hastings Business Enterprise Network.

Did you know that we sponsor a student to attend Luminosity in July? We also sponsor the Greater Port Macquarie Woman in Business Award. As a financial member, your contribution allows all of us to be part of our community in meaningful ways. Thank you.

Annually, the HBWN members and membership dollars support these local organisations:

  • HBWN extends a $1000 sponsorship to the Hastings Education Fund
  • HBWN offers a scholarship for a student to attend Luminosity
  • HBWN sponsors the Woman in Business Award at the Greater Port Macquarie Business Awards
  • HBWN committee and members are keen volunteers for Tastings on Hastings

HBWN Continues Pledge for Parity - Port Macquarie Rotary

Karen Archer, seen here with Dr. Ted Giblin, recently spoke to the Port Macquarie Rotary club on the issue of parity.

We want to keep the conversation going rather than just once a year during International Women's Day. Although there were a few doubters that parity is actually an issue, Karen explained the facts with supporting statistics. The eye opening statistics as recent as 2014 are:

  • Average full time weekly earnings for an equivalent position will earn 18.2% less than their male counterparts
  • Superannuation payouts for women were only 57% of payouts for men
  • Pregnancy resulted in discrimination for 50% of women
  • Girls are paid 11% less pocket money than boys

HBWN Sponsors Business Award

We are proud to sponsor the Woman in Business Award category in the Holiday Coast Credit Union Greater Port Macquarie Business Award. Please consider nominating a deserving business. Eligibility includes females who have owned or co-owned a business for more than 12 months. More information can be found on the Port Macquarie Chamber website. Voting will open 20 April, 2016.

The HBWN Partners with Zonta International

Zonta International, as part of their "Economic Security 4 Women" initiative, invited local businesswomen to participate in an important round table discussion on the topic of Domestic Violence and its impact on work.

The information gathered from the session held on Tuesday 17th May, will be used to engage with the Australian Government on policy issues as part of a better, more informed and representative dialogue between women and government.

The areas for discussion included specific changes in policy, processes and/or legislation required to ensure women living with Domestic Violence can stay in meaningful employment while they deal with this terrible problem.

Thank you to all the ladies who provided their perspective on the gaps that currently exist and how to close them. And thank you to Margaret Bateman from Zonta International for providing HBWN members with this important opportunity.
