The new Menu Review Audit Tool Guidelines for Dietitians
have been recently released by the Dietitians Association of Australia. NPA are proud to have been involved
in writing the guidelines in consultation with food service and aged care dietitians from around the country.
The Menu Review Audit Tool has used the Best
Practice Food and Nutrition Manual for guidance and provides practical suggestions for how facilities
can ensure they are providing optimal nutrition through their menu. It is available for Accredited Practising
Dietitians to use when assessing your menu. It aims to provide a consistent method for dietitians for
conducting menu reviews, and to ensure an evidence based approach to recommendations for aged care homes.
NPA can provide a menu
review according to the new guidelines- in person or a remote review via phone or Skype.

the Audit Tool in our Improving
Nutrition Seminars for this year.

Does your menu include protein at breakfast? Current
research suggests that including protein foods at 3 meals per day can help to prevent the loss of
muscle (or sarcopenia) that occurs with ageing and frailty. Most people eat a eat a protein meal at lunch
and the evening meal, but what about breakfast? The protein content of a piece of toast and jam is very
low.
Here are some ideas on how to include protein in your breakfast menu:
-
Include a hot breakfast with eggs on as many days of the week as possible
-
Fish cakes
-
Baked beans on toast
-
Cereal with milk and yoghurt
-
Make porridge
with milk and add some skim milk powder
-
Toast or bread and cheese
-
Offer
a glass of milk with breakfast
