What we eat has an impact on our brain and how we age! Ngaire Hobbins is an Accredited Practising Dietitian who has researched extensively on the benefits of good nutrition on the brain and the ageing process. She recommends:

  • Use it or lose it- keep active
  • Eat enough protein- spread over the day
  • Include antioxidants
  • Prevent osteoporosis- ensure a good intake of Calcium and monitor Vitamin D levels
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • 'Don't get too thin'- avoid unintentional weight loss
  • Keep your brain active- mental challenges are improtant
  • Social interaction is vital

Anne Schneyder presented last week at Better Practice Sydney about the Dietitians Association of Australia's new Menu Review Audit Tool. What a great honour and a fantastic way to spread the news about the new standardised protocols for dietitians when undertaking menu reviews.

The Tool is based on the guidelines in the Best Practice Food and Nutrition Manual for Aged Care Homes and includes practical and flexible recommendations for improvements in nutrition care.
