Term 3, Week 3 - Friday 10 August 2018

From the Principal

Intercol

Congratulations to all of the boys who participated in the recent Intercol with Sacred Heart College. It was a memorable weekend of competitive sport, enduring friendships and tremendous College spirit. On behalf of the College, I extend my grateful thanks to the staff and parents/caregivers from both Colleges who worked hard to ensure that the 2018 Intercol contributed to this longstanding tradition that started in Rostrevor's first year. I'm sure you will enjoy the gallery that captured much of the colour and spirit of the event.

Balaklava Eisteddfod

Congratulations also to our students in the Middle School Rock Band after their performance at the Balaklava Eisteddfod. On their behalf, I extend our thanks to Mrs Tiggemann and the Music Team for making such opportunities available to our boys.

2018 NAIDOC Youth Award Presentation

Further congratulations to Year 12 Kaya Scott (pictured below) on winning the 2018 NAIDOC Youth Award this week. Kaya received his award at a recent Campbelltown Council ceremony.

Marian Day

On Wednesday 15 August we will celebrate one of the most significant days in our College calendar, Marian Day.  This is a special day in the Catholic Church as it is the Feast of the Assumption.  In the context of Rostrevor College, an all-boys school in the Edmund Rice tradition, this feast is very important. This day is also an opportunity to give thanks for our own Mothers. We emphasise the respect that all Christian gentlemen should show for women but particularly our Mothers, who have all made so many sacrifices for us.

This is one of two whole school Masses celebrated by the College Community.  Subsequently, we would like to extend an invitation to all parents/caregivers to join us. The Mass will commence at 11.00am and it would be appreciated if parents/caregivers could arrive and be seated by 10.50am.  On entering Purton Hall, we ask you to make your way to the front of the auditorium where we will have reserved seats available.  Light refreshments will be available following the Mass in the Gold Room of Rostrevor House.

After the whole school Mass, students will gather in House groups as guest speakers from their House charities will present on the theme of advocacy. Students in each House will then come together and participate in a special school-provided luncheon, followed by an R-12 Walkathon in House groups on one of three different routes off campus.

While celebrating and enjoying themselves, the boys are asked to be mindful that, in celebrating together, we are privileged people and, as such, must stand in solidarity with the underprivileged and unfortunate in our world.  Hence, we are asking each student to seek sponsorship for the Walkathon to support the nominated Charity for his House. Sponsorship forms have been distributed to students. Please encourage your son to participate wholeheartedly in this community-building day and support him with the collection and return of donations/pledges.

Principal

The Inter-Collegiate spirit is very much alive and well! I can't quite recall a moment in my career thus far when I have been as proud of our Rostrevor College Community as I was on Friday evening and Saturday. It was hard to wipe the smile from my face, and I'm sure all the staff, coaches, families and friends felt the same way. The incredible atmosphere present across the entire weekend was contagious, and we were certainly treated to brilliant levels of skill, determination and passion. Whilst there were many fantastic victories throughout the weekend,  I would like to highlight the First XI Soccer and First XVIII Football Teams for their nail-biting fixtures resulting in a 2-2 draw and 1 point victory respectively.

These gentlemen represented Rostrevor College tremendously, and united an entire community with their efforts. I would like to congratulate and offer my sincere thanks to all those who were involved in the running of the weekend. There are far too many to list but please know your involvement is very much appreciated, and contributed to the great success that was Intercol Weekend 2018.
