Term 1, Week 9 - Friday 29 March 2019

Week 9 Update

Congratulations to our boys for their sincere and enthusiastic participation in the Harmony Day, Close the Gap and 'Say No to Bullying' activities at the end of last week.  I also offer my sincere thanks to our student leaders who played such a strong role in organising the activities and generally setting such a positive tone. After the tragic events in Christchurch the week before, watching our young men commit to projects that make the world a better place was a great way to finish the week.

Working towards our new Learning Management System (LMS) and Communications Platform
Having received feedback from families about the need for us to make the most of emerging technologies to make it easier for parents to stayed connected to their sons' learning and co-curricular activities, our new systems will be developed in 2019 in preparation for implementation in 2020.

This week, our LMS Project Team met with three leading companies to evaluate their products, with the final recommendation of the preferred product to be made before the end of Term 1.  While implementation is months away, we are already getting excited by the many new features offered by the leading companies.  With this in mind, I have asked our LMS Project Team to give high priority to those products that provide parents with easy access to all of the information they need, when they need it.

MiniRoos Soccer Carnival - this Sunday
We are delighted to be hosting over 500 families this Sunday for the inaugural Rostrevor MiniRoos Carnival. Our special thanks go to the following Clubs who are our partners in this venture.

  • Adelaide Blue Eagles
  • Campbelltown City
  • North Eastern MetroStars
  • Modbury Jets
2019 Open Day - this Sunday
Our annual Open Day provides prospective families with the chance to tour the College and speak with staff, students and parents over a relaxed afternoon tea in the Valley.  Once again, we have been affirmed by the growing number of families who have already registered for the day.

Strategic Plan
Following our consultation with the community in 2018, I am delighted to share with you a series of five slides which capture the final content of our Strategic Plan.  Most importantly, we invite your comment about how well the document captures your priorities regarding your son's education here at Rostrevor and your aspirations for the College itself.  The Board will consider your feedback and the need for any refinements of our plan before engaging a Graphic Designer to develop the final document.

The Plan is arranged in such a way as to capture:

  • Our Vision for the College and for our boys;
  • Our strategic priorities over the next few years;
  • How we plan to achieve the priorities;
  • The goals associated with each priority.

Co-Curricular Report

As this current Term has progressed rapidly, we've now reached the conclusion of our Summer Season for Term 1 across almost all activities. It seems quite remarkable that in less than a months' time we could well be trading in the shorts, t-shirt and Saturday Advertiser for attire more suited to snow season and seeking refuge from the cold. The near-perfect weather and relaxed environment that is often associated with Summer Co-Curricular activities really did facilitate a real sense of community, with many parents, friends and family members coming to support our students which was fantastic. I don't think we can ever underestimate the enjoyment that our boys receive when their family, teachers or friends come to observe them in their respective pursuits and I thank all of you who have done so, either frequently or infrequently. I would also like to thank the Grounds & Maintenance Staff who have worked meticulously to ensure our facilities are presented in the pristine fashion many of us may have witnessed over the past months.

In a near perfect fashion to conclude their season, the First XI Cricket side completed a very impressive victory over Sacred Heart in the annual Intercollegiate fixture. Without repeating too much of what Mr. Bill Trewartha has written, it was the first time since 2009 that Rostrevor have been crowned Intercol victors as the away team. Another fantastic achievement and one that has capped off a very successful last 6 months for Mr. Trewartha and the boys.

As we now begin to prepare for the upcoming Winter Season, communication will be going out to all students and families next week in relation to training times, trials, expectations etc. Apart from our Open teams and a select few senior teams, we plan to begin training for many Winter activities in Week 11 this Term. Hopefully this will allow coaches, team managers and staff to correctly identify numbers and likely requirements from an administration point of view before Term 2 begins. I know it's been what seems like never ending training and fixtures, but if we can all continue encouraging students to attend their nominated training sessions or send appropriate notification if unavailable that would be much appreciated.

It's imperative that we, as a Rostrevor College community, continue to build the positive momentum and increasing standards from a Co-Curricular perspective and carry these into Term 2. There are many exciting developments happening, and some potentially unique opportunities on offer in the future. I hope all whom were involved can reflect upon Term 1 with some positive and lasting memories, and approach Term 2 with excitement and anticipation.

Thomas Griffiths (Year 7) has recently competed at the State Individual Championships for Athletics, held at Santos Stadium. Thomas won Gold in both the Under 13 Boys 100m and 200m. In both events he ran a PB, and broke longstanding club records with times of 12.47 for the 100m and 25.25 for the 200m. Fantastic to see Thomas continue his involvement in Athletics and also achieving success whilst doing so; we wish him all the best for future endeavours.

If your son, be he a current or past scholar, has made any significant achievement in an activity outside of the College, please pass this on to me via email to lmanuel@rostrevor.sa.edu.au or by phone, so that I can include his achievements in the weekly newsletter.
