MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi everyone

In the recent Council Budget, $345,000 was allocated to undertake major repairs to the footpaths on Sherwood Rd Sherwood, pictured. The footpath through the shopping precinct was marked up for repairs and it seemed like good news for Sherwood, which is struggling to find tenants for some shops at the moment.  However, when seeking information about the project during the Budget debate, The Deputy Mayor, Cr Krista Adams, advised me it was a 'typo' and Sherwood footpaths would not be getting the money. Worse still the 'typo' is not just a spelling mistake, say leaving an 'o' out of wood or a lower case instead of upper case 's', it will not be spent anywhere in Tennyson Ward. The 'typo' as it turns out is Sherwood actually means Rocklea. Not a typo in my view but a pretty big mistake that means Sherwood misses out altogether.

After placing my concerns very clearly on the record during the Budget debate, I have now requested a City of Lights project for the Sherwood shopping precinct instead. This is a new decorative lighting project for suburban areas around the City in need of some TLC. The proposal has been put forward by Council officers at my request to be delivered this year and awaits sign off, together with others from around the City, from the Lifestyle Chairperson, Cr Perter Matic. Let's hope no typing is involved.

Some good news for Sherwood though, I will be investing $100,000 in an upgrade of the forts at the Sherwood Arboretum playground from the Tennyson Ward Parks and Footpath Trust Fund in coming months. The current forts are old and very tired and new equipment will boost this popular play space.

Regards, Nicole.

Ps. lots of brilliant fetes coming up in the next few weeks in Corinda and Chelmer See below for all the details.

DUNLOP PARK, CORINDA PLAYGROUND NOW OPEN!

Work is finished on the new $130,000 playground at Dunlop Park, Corinda, just in time for school holidays next week.

The fence comes down on Monday for two weeks and then the new shade sails will be erected. Some temporary closures may be experienced during construction.

This year, $50,000 has been set aside for Stage 2, including:

  • learner bike circuit; and
  • footpath to the playground from Oxley Rd.

For a more detailed view of the design, visit my website here.

Please join me for cake and cordial to celebrate the opening of the new playground from 11am-12pm, Saturday 10 August at Dunlop Park. The playground is looking great and I'm excited to see it used by the local community over coming weeks!

LAUREL AVE, CHELMER HERITAGE TREES

A major project will commence this year on improving the health and sustainability of Laurel Ave's historic Camphor Laurel trees in Chelmer. These heritage listed trees are struggling due to age and infrastructure related impacts.

$479,000 has been budgeted this year for two dead removals, 10 replacements, major dead wood trimming and footpath safety improvements for residents and the trees. Residents with frontages directly impacted will be consulted throughout the project.

If you have any concerns about these works, please contact my office on 3403 8605 or at tennyson.ward@bcc.qld.gov.au.

CORINDA LOW RAIL BRIDGE UPDATE

Thank you all for signing the petition to widen the low rail bridge at Corinda/Sherwood. Almost 1000 residents signed the petition. As a result, Council has now written to the State Government regarding details of the funding proposal for the widening of the Oxley Rd rail bridge. When the State Government replies, I will update everyone with further details. This is also a project that I discuss regulalry with State Member and Minister for Transport, Mark Bailey.

One of the biggest bottlenecks along Oxley Rd is the low rail bridge separating Sherwood and Corinda. The single lane merge sees traffic banked back along Oxley Rd for a kilometre or more and encourages rat running through Jerrold St because of the congestion. In the AM peak, the Oxley Rd/Coonan St corridor is the 4th slowest in the City averaging just 21kms an hour.

I am hopeful that both Council and the State Government will commit to funding this much-needed project.

SHERWOOD DOG OFF LEASH AREA

Council is now trialling an unfenced dog off leash area (DOLA) at Thomas St Park (off Egmont St), Sherwood after petitions from local residents. As you know, there is no dog park in  Sherwood, the closest being Graceville and Corinda.

The trial will run for six months, until December 2019. Signage has been erected marking the trial area and all dogs must be on-leash outside this zone.

As this park is flood prone, Council will not construct a formal dog park at this location, so the unfenced dog park is a good compromise.

I am hopeful this trial will provide a suitable space for owners to let their dogs play with other dogs and to throw a ball. Please keep in mind that outside this designated area, your dog should be on a lead at all times.

DUNLOP PARK STORMWATER HARVESTING AND REUSE

Starting early-July, Council is investing in a new stormwater harvesting system for the Oxley United Soccer Club at Dunlop Park, Corinda. This innovative project will harvest stormwater from the main stormwater pipes running under Oxley Rd and divert it to the Club for reuse.

Construction includes:

  • installing two new storage tanks connected to the existing tanks;
  • constructing a stormwater harvesting collection point and pipeline;
  • installing sensors in each of the tanks; and
  • connecting to the existing control panel and pump for irrigation.

Work is due to be completed by late-August and will generally take place between Monday and Saturday between the hours of 6:30am to 6:30pm. The construction area will be fenced off to the public during this time and nearby residents will be notified of any out-of-hours work. Council have consulted with the Oxley United Soccer Club to help minimise any disruption.

ROAD AND CONSTRUCTION WORKS

Kauri Pine Maintenance

Mulching works have begun at the Sherwood Arboretum to improve the health of the Kauri Pines along Sir Nathan Avenue (Kauri Avenue).

Works include expanding the area of mulch around the base of the Kauri pines to approximately double the current width. This will help to improve the stability of the trees by improving  soil quality and protecting tree roots.

Works will be undertaken over three stages, which include removing the grass, aeration of the treated areas and then the application of mulch. This is due to be completed by the end of June, weather permitting.

Signage has been installed in the work zone. The work areas around the trees have also been marked to  demarcate the extent of the new mulched areas. No hard edging or garden beds are being installed.

Thank you for your patience during these much-needed tree health improvement works.

Lahey's Mill Stabilisation Works

Council are currently undertaking stabilisation works on the sawdust separator at heritage-listed Lahey's Mill, which sits within the Sherwood Bus Depot. Support columns for the hoppers within the sawdust separator, a remnant from the original mill, are nearing the end of their life and require stabilisation.

Works will involve erecting a steel scaffold beneath the two hoppers, and then a a steel frame and lightweight roof to support the structure. Once the steel frame is complete, the scaffolding will be removed. The existing support columns will be retained after stabilisation works are complete.

The support frame and lightweight roof have been designed to be sympathetic to the original structure and its industrial use. Two heritage architects have assessed the proposal to ensure the works are sympathetic and consistent with the heritage values of the site.

Lahey's Mill was constructed in 1910 by the Lahey Family, early pioneers in the Queensland timber industry, and was added to the Heritage Places Register in 2011.

Works have begun and will take a total of 12 weeks to complete. Works will be undertaken during the day and all access will be via the bus depot.

Energy Efficient Lighting Upgrades

In coming weeks, Council will begin its second round of works on the Energy Efficient Lights for Brisbane project.

As part of Council's three year project, approximately 8000 lights will be upgraded to more energy efficient LED lighting, which helps reduce energy consumption by up to 60%. 1200 lights at 80 locations around the city have been upgraded so far, with another 1800 lights at 280 locations to be installed as part of round two.

Within the Tennyson Ward, lighting upgrades will be and have been undertaken at the following locations:

  • Brisbane Corso Park, Fairfield
  • Fairfield Park, Fairfield
  • Faulkner Park, Graceville
  • Dunlop Park, Corinda
  • Englefield Rd Park, Oxley
  • Faulkner Park, Graceville
  • Francis Outlook Park, Corinda
  • Graceville Riverside Parklands, Graceville
  • Nosworthy Park, Corinda
  • Yeronga Memorial Park, Yeronga

The majority of the LED lights will be installed during business hours between Monday to Friday. The installation of lights at each location will take from half a day up to a week, depending on the number of lights to be replaced at the site. Pedestrians and cyclists may experience minor detours or delays when travelling through a park or bikeway during the installation of new LED lights. Where necessary, traffic controllers will be on-site to assist pedestrians and cyclists to safely move through the work area.

Queensland Rail Track Maintenance

Bus Stop Accessibility Improvement Program

Council is undertaking works to improve the accessibility of bus stops across the City. As part of the Bus Stop Accessibility Improvement Program, 6,600 Brisbane bus stops will undergo upgrades and maintenance works to boarding points, access paths, waiting areas, signs, tactile ground surface indicators and bus stop seats to ensure compliance with disability and accessibility regulations.

The following bus stop will be upgraded in the coming months:

  • #2715, Oxley Rd at Graceville Uniting Church, stop 49
  • #10132, Cliveden Ave at Corinda primary, stop 65
  • #1636, Oxley Rd at Milpera, stop 51

There may be some minor local impacts during work hours of between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday, however some out of hours works may be required. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption to the local community.

Tree removals

36 Victoria Ave, Chelmer
One Poinciana tree
Work will be completed by the end of June 2019
Replacement tree will be planted at this location, one Poinciana tree.

Queensland Urban Utilities Sewer Upgrade Appel St, Graceville

From July, Queensland Urban Utilities (QUU) will begin installation of a new gravity sewer main in Appel Street which will reduce wet weather in the area under most circumstances. The new sewer line will be installed using micro-tunnelling and the project is expected to take about three months to complete, weather and site conditions permitting.

Work will include:

  • installation of a new sewer line using micro-tunnelling;
  • installation of a six temporary launch/retrieval shafts which will be decommissioned following the sewer line installation and replaced with six new sewer maintenance holes; and
  • connection and commissioning works to tie in the new sewer line to the existing sewer infrastructure.

The majority of the work will take place during the day between 6.30am and 6pm, Monday to Friday, with some occasional work occurring 7am to 2pm on Saturdays, if required.
