MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi everyone,

A big thank you to Queensland Governor the Hon Paul De Jersey AO and former Sherwood resident for attending a special ceremony at the Sherwood Arboretum for National Tree Day last week. Sherwood State School students and teachers helped the Governor to plant four new natives to celebrate the occasion. In 1925, the Governor, Sir Matthew Nathan and the Principal of Sherwood State School, together with distinguished residents of the day, planted the 72 Kauri Pines so it was wonderful to keep this tradition alive. Check out the name plaques on the Kauri Ave trees to find out who attended almost 100 years ago! A big thank you to FOSAA, Dale and Prue from the Botanic Gardens team and Council officers for making the event so special.

See you on Saturday, 24 August for the Graceville State School giant Fete jumble sale from 9am, and fun activities and food, all day from 10am culminating in fireworks at 7pm. I look forward to seeing you there.

Regards, Nicole.

PARKING CHANGES - HONOUR AVE, CHELMER

In coming weeks, Council will extend the current yellow line on the southern frontage of Chelmer Station on Honour Ave to improve safety and traffic flow.

We have been pushing for this for many years and finally Council has agreed to continue the yellow lines in the narrower section of the street between the pedestrian underpass and Chelmer St E. This will completely remove parking opposite 141 Honour Ave to allow for safe passing of large vehicles, such as trucks and buses.

Work is scheduled to be completed by the end of next week, weather permitting. Parking will still be available in existing areas along Honour Ave, north of the pedestrian underpass.

A refuge is also listed for future Budget funding to facilitate a safer crossing point for pedestrians and commuters accessing Chelmer Station along this busy stretch of Honour Ave.

I am hopeful this will help improve safety for vehicles travelling along this section of Honour Ave. If you notice any vehicles continuing to park in this section after the yellow lines are installed, please contact my office on 3403 8605 or Council's 24/7 Call Centre on 3403 8888.

DUNLOP PARK, CORINDA PLAYGROUND UPDATE

Great news! The new all-ages playground at Dunlop Park, Corinda, next to the pool off Oxley Rd is now open and the shade sail is in. I am delighted to have invested $130,000 in the fun and challenging new equipment including a large fort with climbing apparatus for beginners through to adventurous children, swings, a bouncy mars rover, digger, new shade sails and more. In coming years the recently planted trees will also help provide more natural shade.

This year, $50,000 has been set aside for Stage 2, for a learner bike and scooter circuit, with signs and lines to help beginners.

Please join me for cake and cordial to celebrate the opening of the playground from 11am-12pm, tomorrow, Saturday 10 August at new Dunlop Park playground.

A big thank you to all the local residents and children who met with me and emailed me with their ideas for this fabulous new play space.

The playground is looking great and I'm excited to see it used by the local community.

INDOOROOPILLY BIKEWAY
Council has now finalised the Indooroopilly Bikeway design, now called the Indooroopilly Riverwalk. It's blown out in cost from $8m to $58m and construction will start in early 2020. The 790m pathway will be 5m wide and link the Witton Army Barracks with Twigg St/Witton Rd as part of the Western Freeway Bikeway.

In principle, the project is great and for the past 18 months I have been fighting for a better connection to the new bikeway for Southside residents, including for the many children from our district who go to school in Indooroopilly and beyond.

You can read all the details here.

There are a few issues with the project that in my view remain unresolved.

  1. there's a staircase connection to the riverwalk off the Walter Taylor Bridge, otherwise we have to use the same old path along Radnor St around to the new Foxton St connection;
  2. there's a staircase on Oxley Rd leading to the Jack Pesch Bridge connection to the new bikeway, near Queenscroft St;
  3. all the construction works are being staged in Chelmer under the Bridge (disruption ahead);
  4. Council will build a temporary pontoon (2+years) for the works but won't build a permanent one after we lost the old pontoon in the floods - this is short-sighted in my view and we should be getting a permanent asset for $58m; and
  5. there's a viewing platform that appears to look into Chelmer backyards rather than a river orientation.
We absolutely need more off-road dedicated shared pathways but in my view, for the huge price tag of $58m, there should be brilliant access for not just Northside but Southside residents too.
SAM SIGNS GET RESULTS

The portable flashing speed (SAM) signs on Chelmer St E, Chelmer, Oxley Rd, Graceville have shown some interesting results.

Chelmer St E, Chelmer is posted as 50km/h. The sign collected data for a two month period from 18 April to 29 June, 2019. During this time 95,211 vehicles (av. 1,304 per day) passed through the portable speed sign zone.

15,665 vehicles or 16.5% of all drivers were recorded travelling above the posted speed limit. Of the vehicles speeding, 85% were travelling at or below 58km/hr. When prompted, speeding drivers reduced their speeds by an average of 4kms to 54km/hr within the speed camera range.

Oxley Rd, Graceville is posted as 60km/h. The sign collected data for a three month period from 30 March to 29 June, 2019. During this time, 718,246 vehicles (av. 7,893 per day) passed through the portable speed sign zone.

112,984 or 15.7% of all drivers were recorded travelling above the posted speed limit. Of the vehicles speeding, 85% were travelling at or below 62 km/h. When prompted, speeding drivers reduced their speeds by an average of 6km to 56km/h within the speed camera range.

King Arthur Tce, Tennyson, near the Tennis Centre is posted as 40km/h. The sign collected data for a six week period from 18 April to 29 June, 2019. During this time, 185,342 vehicles (ave 2,574 per day) passed through the portable speed sign zone.

11,901 vehicles or 6.4% of all drivers were recorded travelling above the posted speed limit. Of the vehicles speeding, 85% were travelling at or below 46km/hr. When prompted, speeding drivers reduced their speeds by an average of 2kms to 44km/hr within the speed camera range.

I am glad to see speeding drivers are slowing down when prompted, but please remember to drive safely in our streets.

Lane closures will be in place during these night works and traffic control will be on site. I will update residents once I receive a firm date from Council for the works.

Council is undertaking works to improve the accessibility of bus stops across the City. As part of the Bus Stop Accessibility Improvement Program, 6,600 Brisbane bus stops will undergo upgrades and maintenance works to boarding points, access paths, waiting areas, signs, tactile ground surface indicators and bus stop seats to ensure compliance with disability and accessibility regulations.

The following bus stop will be upgraded in coming months:

  • #1637, Oxley Rd at Milpera, stop 51, Chelmer

There may be some minor local impacts during work hours of between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday, however some out of hours works may be required. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption to the local community.

Queensland Urban Utilities Maintenance Works

Sewer Works Long St W, Graceville

Queensland Urban Utilities (QUU) are currently undertaking works to install a new sewer pipe across Long Street West near the intersection at Molonga Terrace. The project is expected to take up to four weeks to complete, subject to weather and site conditions.

The majority of the work will take place during the day between 6.30am and 6pm, Monday to Friday, with occasional work between 7am and 2pm on Saturdays, if required.

During construction, nearby residents might be impacted by:

  • construction related noise and dust from vehicle and truck movements, reversing safety beepers and equipment including an excavator, jack hammer and grinder
  • some street parking will be temporarily unavailable in the work area
  • use of road plates to cover the road excavation outside working hours
  • changed traffic conditions
  • temporary odour when we connect the new main to the existing network towards the end of construction.

For more details, please contact QUU on 3855 6730.

Corrosion Prevention Dunlop Park, Corinda

Starting this month, QUU will be undertaking relocation and replacement of pipes in Dunlop Park, Corinda to extend their lifespan, prevent corrosion and have less impact on nearby trees. This work will involve minor excavation or underground directional drilling to access the water mains, lay the conduit and bury the pipes.

During the work, nearby residents, businesses or park users might be impacted by:

  • construction-related noise and dust during excavation to install anodes and trenching to lay conduit
  • fenced off areas in the park for the duration of the work. These areas will be fully restored after the work is completed
  • some on-street parking might be temporarily unavailable
  • tree trimming or removal. Prior to construction, some trees might be identified for trimming. BCC arborists will be consulted to ensure minimal impact to trees
  • changed traffic conditions and possible lane closures around work sites, with traffic management in place to manage traffic flow.

For more information, contact QUU on 13 26 57.

Sewer Realignment Oxley

Over coming weeks, QUU will start work on inspection, cleaning and relining work along multiple sewer lines in Oxley. The work will be carried out intermittently over about eight weeks, weather and ground conditions permitting.

Work hours will be Monday to Saturday, between 6.30am to 6.30pm. Some occasional night work might be required to optimise low flow conditions.

The project team will carry out preliminary inspection works, including CCTV cameras, followed by cleaning and relining via the sewer maintenance holes in Blunder Road and Logan Avenue, Oxley.

During work nearby residents and businesses might be impacted by:

  • some intermittent odour when maintenance hole lids are removed for tankering, or during ventilation to ensure the safety of crews working in a confined spaces
  • changed traffic conditions and possible lane closures around work sites, with traffic management in place to manage traffic flow. Residents are asked to travel through the area with care and observe all signposting, reduced speed limits, and directions form traffic control.
  • some on-street parking along residential streets may be temporarily unavailable near work sites

For more information, contact QUU on 13 26 57.

Road Closure Quarry Rd, Sherwood

A full road closure of Quarry Rd, Sherwood will take place between 6am and 6pm on Sat 10 August to remove a crane from a construction site in the street. Traffic control will be in place and local and emergency access will be maintained at all times. For more information, please contact Get Directed Traffic Control on 1800 828 723. Please drive carefully through these works.
