MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi everyone,

A big thank you to the 900 residents that recently signed the petition to extend the 196 Buz route to Yeronga. The petition went to Council last week, where the Lord Mayor and his 'team' voted against my motion to ensure any additional services, following the commencement of the Brisbane Metro, include the 196 extension. They did not even speak to the amendment I put forward, just voted against it. Later in the debate, Deputy Mayor, Krista Adams, claimed that Yeronga will be an "absolute winner" from the Brisbane Metro project even though the closest stop is up at Dutton Park/PA - about a 4km walk uphill. Coupled with her refusal to specifically commit extra bus services to Yeronga, it's not looking good. I will not give up. The fight for better bus services for Yeronga has been an ongoing battle for many years and, with your help, will continue. You can read the Council report and my speech, including the amendment I put forward, here.

With the Annerley Community Bookshop closing after 20 plus years I want to say thank you to the hundreds of volunteers, Paul and the Committee who put their heart and soul into this special community resource. Your kindness, spirit and sense of fun has been a great delight for Annerley residents and beyond! The Bookshop kindly donated their leftover books and equipment to Braille House, just up Ipswich Rd and I encourage you to come along to the grand opening of the Braille House Shop on Saturday, 17 August at 10am.

Regards, Nicole.

P.S. Good news! Council has found some maintenance money to returf the dustbowl in the centre of the Yeronga Hyde Rd Dog Park. Work is to be undertaken between September to November. I am still working on lights and thank everyone for their ideas about the park from our recent dog event. Watch this space.

RED BENCH AT ANNERLEY JUNCTION

You may have noticed a bus stop bench at Annerley Junction has recently been painted bright red.

To raise awareness about domestic violence prevention, each Council Ward has had a seat painted red to support the Red Rose Foundation's work. The Red Rose Foundation is a national not-for-profit foundation focused on raising awareness of and addressing the issues surrounding domestic violence deaths. You can find our more at www.redrosefoundation.com.au.

As the wonderful Women's Legal Service Queensland is just up the street, I put the red bench in Annerley Junction where it will be seen by thousands of people in our local community and on their way to work.

I hope this red bench will help improve discussion and recognition of domestic violence, which impacts so many families and communities across Australia every year.

LOCAL PARKS UPDATE

Rowlinson Park, Yeronga Upgrade

This year I have budgeted $105,000 from the Tennyson Ward parks trust funds for a new playground at Rowlinson Park, Yeronga. The current playground is a very tired, older style and many local families have spoken with me about the need for an upgrade.

Please join me at the playground site off Nelson or Simon Sts, Yeronga to discuss the new design on Sat, 31 Aug from 10am - 11am. You can also review a range of design ideas on my website here and email me your ideas or preferences by Friday, 6 Sep. All of these designs would fit within the budget allocated by Council, but can be varied. I am very happy to consider any specific play or park equipment requests.

Once the design is finalised, installation takes about three months, depending on the availability of equipment. Please send me your ideas or pop along for a chat.

Rigby Place Park, Yeronga Named

Please join me on Mon, 26 Aug at 11am to celebrate the naming of a new pocket park on the River at Yeronga in honour of The Rigby Family.

The park and signage will honour two generations of Rigbys, who lived in Yeronga and, during WWI and WWII and in peace, served their country and their community.

In the 1880s the Rigby family settled around the Shottery St area and began farming and raising their family. When war broke, the Rigby children, Lyl (a nurse), George, Gordon and Jack, like so many others from our district, signed up to fight for their country. Sadly, Jack was killed in action at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915, aged 23. The youngest of the Rigby children, Hubert, went on to serve in WW2.

Their father William Rigby was one of three owners who gifted the land upon which the Yeronga Dutton Park RSL now stands helping to establish the Yeronga RSL. Mother Julia was instrumental in planting the commemorative avenue of trees in Yeronga Memorial Park in 1917 in honour of those, including her son Jack, who died at Gallipoli.

A dedication and morning tea will be hosted, together with the RSL and Rigby Family descendants, in the Park at the end of Heritage Close, near the old Ryndarra Military Hospital. All are welcome to attend.

Recently, Paringa Park in Yeronga was renamed in honour of local resident Ron Goeldner, a community champion and volunteer who sadly passed away last year. You can check out the park and more about Ron on the new sign near the playground at the corner of Esplanade and Dianne St.

WOOLLOONGABBA BIKEWAY UPDATE

Work on the Woolloongabba Bikeway is now complete. The bikeway provides safer access for cyclists travelling to and from the CBD along Annerley Rd and Stanley St, Wolloongabba and connects to the Riverloop, University of Queensland and Kangaroo Point Bikeway.

Key features of the bikeway includes:

  • a separated bi-directional bikeway along Stanley Street, between Ipswich Road and Dock Street;
  • a 145-metre section of separated bi-directional bikeway on the western side of Annerley Road between Stanley Street and the Princess Plaza crossing;
  • an upgraded signalised crossing on Annerley Road at Princess Plaza;
  • a new signalised intersection at Annerley Road, Clarence Street and Catherine Street;
  • on-road bike lanes on both sides of Annerley Road, from the signalised crossing between Princess Plaza and Gladstone Road, Dutton Park;
  • separation barriers, reflectors and audible ripple strip treatments along sections of Annerley Road;
  • improving safety for all road users along Annerley Road by removing some right turn movements for vehicles;
  • replacing the left-turn slip lane on Stanley Street to the Pacific Motorway M3 on-ramp with a signalised left-turn lane;
  • installing three floating bus stops throughout the project corridors to reduce conflicts between cyclists and buses; and
  • providing left-in only access to Merton Road from Stanley Street to ensure safety for all road users.

I hope the new bikeway provides greater and safer access to city for local residents.
