MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi everyone,

I want to thank all the residents and local businesses who have been helping with the drought and bushfire relief efforts over recent weeks. Many people have donated water and baked goods to help those experiencing natural disasters. In particular, I would like to thank Wendy from Graceville Fine Foods for her Water for the West drive. As always, her shop is a hub of charitable works and I want to thank her and all residents who donated water.

The Moggill Rd Roundabout project is now out for consultation. I urge residents to attend one of the information sessions at Indooroopilly Shopping Centre next week. Further details are below. I now have additional information from Council about the two options. Option A, the t-intersection, will be approximately 25 seconds slower along the Coonan St corridor. Option B, the bridge overpass, will be an approximate 8 seconds faster for Coonan St drivers. So essentially about the same as now. This is a very complex project and both options still have a lot of unresolved technical issues. I look forward to seeing you at one of the meetings and I will be providing further information to the community in coming weeks.

Regards, Nicole

P.S. there's a great new event in our community on Sunday, 15 September from 10am-4pm - Sustainable House day. Or if you love music and want to celebrate with the Sherwood Indooroopilly RSL and Queensland Pops Orchestra, come along to their special centenary concert on Saturday 21 September at 2:30pm. Check out the details below.

MOGGILL RD ROUNDABOUT UPGRADE - HAVE YOUR SAY!

Last week Council announced draft plans for the Moggill Rd and Coonan St intersection upgrade. As this project will impact, for better or worse, on traffic using the Coonan St corridor I encourage you to have your say so we get the best outcome possible.

In my view, the project prioritises East - West traffic using Moggill Rd and, if not done properly, could have a detrimental effect on North - South traffic from our side of the River heading into the City and other North-side destinations.

As the glossy brochure contains only very small concept style images which lack detail, it is critical that you review the plans, ask questions and attend an information session, if possible. The cost of the project has not been revealed, which is odd. Option A, the t-intersection, will be approximately 25 seconds slower along the Coonan St corridor. Option B, the bridge overpass, will be an approximate 8 seconds faster for Coonan St drivers. So essentially about the same as now. Understanding whether the project will improve traffic safety and reduce congestion for Southside residents and at what cost is essential information that is not provided in the newsletter.

Upon initial review, Option B looks better because of the estimated 8 second time saving, BUT phasing for the traffic lights at the bridge overpass is unclear, merging lane length on the slip lane are unclear, and the merge with through traffic on Moggill Rd heading into the city may be controlled by a give way or a stop sign and Council have not made a decision on access. How the merge to Moggill Rd for Coonan St drivers heading to the city will be controlled is unclear, but important information that we should speak up about.

I have drafted a range of questions here that I have put to Council and I have included the additional information on Coonan St time savings/detriment above. If you attend a meeting feel free to raise these issues or any others of concern to you.

Information sessions are being held at Indooroopilly Shopping Centre, L3 food court, on:

  • Sat, 14 September 2019, between 9am and 11am; and
  • Thu, 19 September 2019, between 6pm and 8pm.

You can call Council's City Projects team on 1800 010 705 to seek information or email them at cityprojects@brisbane.qld.gov.au. You can view the project information on Council's website here
or call my office and we can send you a hard copy of the plans. Submissions must be in by the end of October 2019. Next year Council will consult on a final design, depending on which option, A or B, is supported. It is so important that you speak up now.

It is critical that you speak up now, as Council will make a decision that could adversely impact on our community for decades.

GRACEVILLE STATION ZEBRA CROSSING PETITION UPDATE

Thank you to everyone who signed the petition earlier this year requesting Council deliver a zebra crossing and build outs near the intersection of Appel St and Verney Rd E to provide a safe crossing point to Graceville Rail Station. Almost 450 people signed the petition calling for a safer crossing point on this busy street.

Last year the Rail Station was upgraded but no safe crossing point to access the Station was delivered. This project has also been listed for many years as a priority in the Tennyson Ward Budget submission and identified as a high priority by the community in the recent Move Safe survey undertaken by Council.

Council have now considered the petition and have agreed to allocate $10,000 under the Move Safe programme to develop a concept design of a pedestrian zebra crossing on Appel St, near Graceville Station. THIS IS ONLY HALF THE JOB AND NO MONEY HAS BEEN PROVIDED TO ACTUALLY INSTALL THE ZEBRA CROSSING.

I moved an amendment motion last Tuesday to design AND Fund the zebra crossing. The Lord Mayor and his 'team' used their massive majority to vote against it. So plan only at this time and we have to keep waiting - I've been asking since 2012 in my local Budget submission - until we get funding. Meanwhile $500k has been spent on all the Budget advertising you have been seeing in recent months. Millions for water fountains and new golf courses too. A zebra crossing would cost $20k. It's extremely frustrating when simple initiatives like this are constantly knocked back.

While this is a step in the right direction, I am still very disappointed that Council have not agreed to fund the zebra crossing in this financial year.

Thank you again to everyone who signed the petition and I will keep the community updated on the concept design.

LOCAL NEWS AND EVENTS

SHERWOOD ARBORETUM WORKING BEE

Spring is really such a great time to enjoy Sherwood Arboretum and there's certainly no more rewarding way of enjoying a Spring day than spending a couple of hours with the Friends of Sherwood Arboretum. Join them from 8.30 am to 10.30 am this Sunday, 15 September, starting at the Arboretum garden shed at the Joseph Street (northern) entry. Morning tea will follow.

Last month, some 200 understory plants were added to the riverside boardwalk rainforest thanks to the good help of volunteers. This Sunday, the group will be continuing their bushland restoration and helping care for the Arboretum's wonderful collection of Australian native trees. Help is welcome with watering some of the Arboretum's younger trees during these present dry conditions.
