MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi everyone,

I want to thank all the residents and local businesses who have been helping with the drought and bushfire relief efforts over recent weeks. Many people have donated water and baked goods to help those experiencing natural disasters. In particular, I would like to thank the Yeronga Community Centre for their amazing baking. As always, Melinda, PJ and their volunteers were a charitable hub and I want to thank them and all residents who donated baked goods.

I'm sure everyone heard Susie O'Neill's moment of reflection and vulnerability on radio and the TV news yesterday. If you see her around, let's smile and wave or let her know we think she's an absolute champion, not just as an elite swimmer, but as a local Mum, active community member, broadcaster and all round legend. Madame Butterfly then and still today to us.

Regards, Nicole

P.S. If you love music and want to celebrate with the Sherwood Indooroopilly RSL and Queensland Pops Orchestra, come along to their special centenary concert on Saturday 21 September at 2:30pm at Corinda. Check out the details below.

HYDE RD REFUGE UPDATE

I have really good news on progress of the new refuge on Hyde Rd, between the dog park and shops near The Village.

Council's has finally approved two important safety improvements.

Firstly, a staggered zebra crossing and centre refuge, which is a much safer design than just a refuge for pedestrians. As you may know $150,000 has been set aside in the Council Budget to deliver the project this year. Design plans are currently being prepared and I will let the community know when a draft is available for review.

Secondly, Council has also supported a speed reduction along Hyde Rd to 50kms per hour. In combination with the staggered zebra crossing and refuge, this should make it much safer for all local residents to cross the road.

In addition, although it's unlikely in the short-term, the intersection of Cansdale St and Hyde Rd does remain listed for traffic lights in future. I will continue requesting the traffic lights, including a green walk signal, in my annual local Budget submission to Council.

This represents the culmination of six years of lobbying and pressure by our local community and I am so pleased that our persistence has paid off. Thank you all for speaking up and I look forward to seeing this important local project delivered in coming months.

LOCAL PARKS UPDATE

Hefferan Park, Annerley Upgrade Have Your Say!

This year I have allocated $50,000 to undertake an upgrade to Hefferan Park, Annerley from the Tennyson Ward Footpath and Parks Trust Fund.

Last year, along with others in the ward, the very old and tired playground equipment was removed for safety reasons and where funds are available, I am upgrading them as a priority. The Question is what should replace it?

I am seeking community feedback on what would be supported to revitalise the small park for community use. This could include one or more of the following, for example:

  • children's swings (approx. $25,000);
  • seating (approx. $2500 per seat);
  • urban board games (eg snakes and ladders, chess or hopscotch);
  • landscaping/tree planting;
  • lighting/welcome to Annerley place name project;
  • public artwork; and/or
  • reuse of the heritage concrete structures (limited).

The location is not ideal for a large children's playground (there are several nearby in Dutton Park and Fairfield), but I would like to activate it to reflect the needs and wishes of nearby Annerley residents. Be creative!

I welcome your ideas by email to Tennyson.Ward@bcc.qld.gov.au by  COB 11 October 2019. Or you are welcome to stop in at my office at Fairfield Gardens next to the Council Library while you are shopping to pass on your ideas.

I will be in the Park to talk with you in person on Saturday, 28 September from 12noon to 1pm.  Please drop by to discuss your ideas. I look forward to hearing from you.

Hyde Rd Dog Off Leash Area Maintenance Works

Over coming months, Council will begin works to remediate the patches of dirt within the Hyde Rd Park dog off leash area (DOLA). This will include returfing of the bare patches to make the area more even and help make sure dogs leave the park as clean as when they arrived!

YEERONGPILLY GREEN ROAD SAFETY PETITION

Residents are currently running a petition to reduce the speed limit along the newly-opened King Arthur Tce, Yeerongpilly and surrounding streets. The road was recently reconfigured and opened with a speed limit of 60km/h after works undertaken by the State Government as part of their Yeerongpilly Green project.

Since reopening, a number of residents have raised concerns with the speed limits and road/crossing configurations on these streets and are now undertaking a petition calling on improved road safety around the Yeerongpilly Green precinct and a reduction to the current speed limits.

King Arthur Tce is a well-used and busy street connecting to Fairfield and Oxley Rds. However, the area is utilised by many pedestrians, bikes and residents attempting to access their homes, the Queensland Tennis Centre, Council building or the nearby train station.

You can sign the petition online here before 30 September 2019 to have your say and support the safety measures proposed by the petitioners.

LAGONDA STREET PARK BRIDGE WORKS

As you may recall, last year Council announced repairs to the pedestrian bridge in Lagonda Street Park to improve safety and increase the bridge's lifespan.

From October until late 2019, Council will close the bridge to undertake these works, which include repairing the existing bridge structure and hand rail, embankment protection works, tree trimming, and landscaping works.

Construction will generally take place between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday. Some out-of-hours works may be required during the repair works. During construction, access to the bridge will be closed. A temporary detour and signage will be in place along Vallely Street and Lagonda Street to maintain access for pedestrians.

MOGGILL RD ROUNDABOUT UPGRADE - HAVE YOUR SAY!

Last week Council announced draft plans for the Moggill Rd and Coonan St intersection upgrade. As this project will impact, for better or worse, on traffic using the Coonan St corridor I encourage you to have your say so we get the best outcome possible.

In my view, the project prioritises East - West traffic using Moggill Rd and, if not done properly, could have a detrimental effect on North - South traffic from our side of the River heading into the City and other North-side destinations.

As the glossy brochure contains only very small concept style images which lack detail, it is critical that you review the plans, ask questions and attend an information session, if possible. The cost of the project has not been revealed, which is odd. Option A, the t-intersection, will be approximately 25 seconds slower along the Coonan St corridor. Option B, the bridge overpass, will be an approximate 8 seconds faster for Coonan St drivers. So essentially about the same as now. Understanding whether the project will improve traffic safety and reduce congestion for Southside residents and at what cost is essential information that is not provided in the newsletter.

Upon initial review, Option B looks better because of the estimated 8 second time saving, BUT phasing for the traffic lights at the bridge overpass is unclear, merging lane length on the slip lane are unclear, and the merge with through traffic on Moggill Rd heading into the city may be controlled by a give way or a stop sign and Council have not made a decision on access. How the merge to Moggill Rd for Coonan St drivers heading to the city will be controlled is unclear, but important information that we should speak up about.

I have drafted a range of questions here  that I have put to Council and I have included the additional information on Coonan St time savings/detriment above. If you attend a meeting feel free to raise these issues or any others of concern to you.

An information session is being held at Indooroopilly Shopping Centre, L3 food court, on Thu, 19 September 2019, between 6pm and 8pm.

You can call Council's City Projects team on 1800 010 705 to seek information or email them at cityprojects@brisbane.qld.gov.au. You can view the project information on Council's website here
or call my office and we can send you a hard copy of the plans. Submissions must be in by the end of October 2019. Next year Council will consult on a final design, depending on which option, A or B, is supported. It is so important that you speak up now.

It is critical that you speak up now, as Council will make a decision that could adversely impact on our community for decades.
