MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi everyone

Due to some behind the scenes Council IT issues, you will notice that my monthly e-newsletter is coming to you from a new email address. The reply comes directly to me at my office and is only used by my office. It doesn't go anywhere else.

With that out of the way, we'll be back to our usual monthly update going forward. If you want more frequent updates on local matters I do post regularly on my facebook page as well.

COVID-19 has been a massive disruption to our normal community life this year but it is wonderful to see that our community remains healthy. Everyday I think how lucky we are to have QLD Chief Medical Officer, Dr Jeanette Young, and her team running things. We have all found new ways of working and going online to attend events and activities as well as remembering how great our local parks and cafes are.

A lot of our community, school and Christmas events are in limbo at the moment but I hope we will be able to hold some of the usual end of year celebrations. I will keep you updated.

Regards, Nicole.

P.S. The Lord Mayor's City Hall concerts have commenced again on Tuesdays at 12 noon. Every Tuesday it's a new hour-long concert of fabulous music and fun. Visit Eventbrite to view the full program and book your free ticket.

PARKS UPDATE

Hefferan Park, Annerley Upgrade

Works for the $120,000 upgrade to Hefferan Park, Annerley have commenced. The project will include new pathways, planter boxes and park furniture, swings, new trees, a street library and historical panels.

Hyde Rd Dog Park, Yeronga Upgrade

$100,000 of upgrade works are due to commence in the coming months at the Hyde Rd dog park. Works will include:

  • a new small dog park;
  • new lighting;
  • bubblers in both the small and large dog areas; and
  • bench seats in both the small and large dog areas.

I will let you know when there is a set start date for works.

John Walker Place, Yeronga

Earlier in the year, relatives of the late John Walker and members of the Yeronga community sucessfully petitioned Council to have a section of parkland within the Brisbane Corso Park, Yeronga renamed in his honour.

For over 50 years, John Walker helped build a sense of community in Yeronga. John and his wife Rae moved to Ormuz Road in 1967, where they raised three daughters. He was a pharmacist who worked in local pharmacies, including Anita Street, and was a regular attendee of Annerley Baptist Church. John volunteered extensively and was an office bearer with many community organisations, including Neighbourhood Watch, Yeronga Hyde Road Kindergarten, Yeronga State School and State High School P & Cs and a member of Yeronga Probus Club and Yeronga Men's Shed. John was passionate about wildlife and the environment, regularly watering the newly planted trees and placing wood at the BBQs along the river. During the 1974 floods, John assisted local residents moving furniture to higher ground using his speedboat along the flooded Brisbane Corso and, in the aftermath, cleaned up flood-damaged houses. In 2011, he joined the 'Mud Army', again assisting those affected by the floods. John contributed significantly to a number of statewide organisations, including the Queensland Museum, National Parks Association of Queensland and Queensland Royal Geographic Society.

DA UPDATE

115 Hyde Rd, Yeronga (Old Paint Factory)

The proposal to redevelop the Old Paint Factory site at 115 Hyde Rd, Yeronga was withdrawn by the developer a few weeks ago. They have commenced marketing activities including a mixed use commercial/retail, arts and residential precinct but have not yet submitted a new development application. There are no details yet as to what is proposed. I will keep you updated when a new DA is lodged.
