MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi everyone

Congratulations to Terry Heath, Principal of Yeronga State High School who is retiring after 42 years teaching the last 14 as Principal of our local high school. Under Terry's leadership the School has reversed dwindling numbers, achieved fantastic cultural, sporting and academic success as well as winning numerous teaching accolades. Thank you Terry for your wonderful contribution to our community.

Good news with Council finally agreeing to support 40kms along Ipswich Rd through Annerley Junction. A big thank you to all the residents, JPSS, Create Annerley and Yeronga Community Centre who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes with me to achieve this outcome. I'll keep you updated about the details as they are implemented in coming weeks. There are still nine points to go on the 10 point plan but this is an important first step in making Annerley Junction safer.

Unfortunately the Cross River Rail project want to send hundreds of trucks per day along Annerley Rd and Fairfield Rd to enter the site via Cornwall St. This is currently not allow with trucks entering and exiting the site via the busway/O'Keefe St. We need to keep pedestrians safe at the corner of Annerley Rd and Cornwall St near Dutton Park Rail Station, with a new high school opening next year even more people especially children will be on foot through this busy area that has no safe crossing point. I need your help to make this area safer for pedestrian and cyclists, sign the petition here.

Finally, Christmas will be a little different this year but there's still some great local events on and ways you can enjoy some festive cheer. Check out further details below.
Regards, Nicole.

ANNERLEY TRAFFIC UPDATE

Cross River Rail Impacts on Annerley Rd
The Cross River Rail authority recently proposed 24/7 operations at the Dutton Park portal behind the PA hospital and hundreds of extra truck movements per day through Annerley. The impact of the proposed changes on the intersection of Annerley Rd, Cornwall St and Kent St near Hefferan Park will be devastating and I fear that lives will be lost.

The changes fail to acknowledge the existing road conditions including congestion along Cornwall St during peak hour, making the turn from Annerley Rd difficult for long and heavy vehicles. The change proposal estimates that traffic volumes from Annerley Rd into Cornwall St are expected to increase by up to 23%, further limiting safe pedestrian egress. There is a lack of safe queuing facilities on Annerley Rd for trucks (and other vehicles) waiting to turn right into Cornwall St and inadequate turning time given the operation of the nearby intersection at Noble St/Cornwall St and Annerley Rd. Increased turning movements at this location will limit pedestrians' time and ability to safely cross Cornwall St to get to and from Dutton Park Station and beyond to local schools, shops and homes.

I hope you will sign the ePetition calling on Council to refuse to widen the intersection at Annerley Rd, Cornwall St and Kent St to facilitate these truck movements. It is critical that Council provides a safe crossing point for school children, commuters, cyclists and local residents across Cornwall Street between Annerley Road and Kent Street, Annerley, and works with the State Government to deliver safer pathways to schools, public transport and the PA Hospital. We need Council dn the State Governemtn to do the right thing and put safety first here.

Ponsonby St
Council has announced new traffic lights at the intersection of Ipswich Rd at Ponsonby St and Junction Tce, Annerley. This was announced without any consultation with me or local residents who fear their streets will be used as a rat-run once traffic lights are installed. On the upside there will be another green walk, signalised crossing point.

Brisbane City Council has set a target to help residents reduce their household carbon emissions (otherwise known as your 'carbon footprint') from home energy use, transport, and waste to six tonnes on average by 2031. The current household average is around 11 tonnes, so this represents about a 50 percent reduction.

To help achieve this goal, Council has launched the Brisbane Carbon Challenge.
