Merry Christmas everyone. What a year it's been! Two elections and a global
pandemic. I am so thankful this year that we live in a safe and connected community and that we have rallied
to adjust to COVID-19 impacts. A big thank you to all our health and aged care workers, retail and service
providers, council officers, teachers, community volunteers and local businesses who stayed open to serve
our community through difficult times this year.
Congratulations too to all the Year 12 and
Year 6 students who mastered online learning and new assessment schemes to graduate in recent weeks. It's
such a joy to attend the end of year events to celebrate their successes and achievements. Well done and
good luck with your future studies.
Unfortunately the State Government Coordinator General
has signed off on changes to the Cross River Rail project allowing 24/7 truck movements through Annerley
and Fairfield. They have conditioned a Construction Management Plan to be signed off by Council, so it's
more important than ever that you sign
the petition here.
I look forward to working with you in 2021 and hope that you have
some time out to catch up with family and friends over the Christmas New Year break.
Regards, Nicole.
P.S. I hope to see you at the Sherwood Arboretum Movie in the Park,
Get Santa at 7pm on Sunday night, weather permitting.

SUBURBAN SHOPFRONT
IMPROVEMENT GRANTS
|
|
Council
have recently announced a new grants program for local small businesses. The Suburban Shopfront Improvement
Grant provides $50,000 per annum over four years to assist property owners and tenants of shopfronts to
refresh the façade of their shop, to improve its appeal to customers and contribute to the character
of the local area.
This is a matched grant, meaning that for every dollar requested from Council,
the Applicant must have an equal dollar amount (or more) to put toward the project. Funding will cover
up to 50% of the cost of visual improvements to a shopfront exterior, to a maximum of $5000 (excluding
GST). The balance cost (50% or more) of the shopfront improvements must be met by the Applicant.
Applications close at 11.59pm on Wednesday 23 December 2020, and applicants will
be notified of the outcome by February 2021. To apply or for more information, visit
Council's website.
|
In November the Queensland State Government Coordinator General signed
off changes to the Cross River Rail project allowing 24 truck movements through Annerley and Fairfield.
While this is an important project for the City, the changes will adversely impact on Annerley residents
when the existing truck movement routes were working well. Previously all truck movements were via Ipswich
Rd/O'Keefe St and the Busway. Under the project variation now all truck will entre via the intersection
of Annerley Rd/Cornwall St/Kent St which has not safe crossing point for pedestrian, many children or
cyclist.
The Coordinator General has conditioned that Construction Management Plan
to be signed off by Brisbane City Council, so it's more important than ever that you sign
the petition here urging Council to ensure there is a safe crossing point between the Park and Rail
Station. It's open until 24 December so please speak up to help make our community safer.
You can read more about the changes, Project Change 8 and a new variation to come Project Change 9 here.
In addition to cut and cover tunnelling, rather than a tunnel boring machine (TBM) which will be noisy
and dusty, the biggest problem is the proposal to allow trucks to enter Peter Doherty St rather than the
current entrance via Boggo Rd, at Dutton Police Station. The State Government has already changed the
road alignment for the High School works, and trucks queuing on the limited right turn lane from Annerley
Rd into Peter Doherty St is unsafe and may cause further congestion. You can make a submission via the
above link at any time prior to 5pm on 24 December, 2020. Please contact your Sate members Amy MacMahon
South.Brisbane@parliament.qld.gov.au and Mark Bailey miller@parliament.qld.gov.au to let them know about
your concerns.

Residents
may have noticed new blue River Loop signs popping up around Yeronga. There was no consultation with me
or the community about these signs which are to promote the already popular river loop cycling route.
In my view, more infrastructure is needed to ensure safety for cyclists, pedestrians and drivers
and this is woefully inadequate given the popularity of the loop. This looks to be a Lord Mayoral captain's
call.

BRISBANE CARBON CHALLENGE
|
|
Brisbane City Council has set a target to help residents reduce their household carbon emissions
(otherwise known as your 'carbon footprint') from home energy use, transport, and waste to six tonnes
on average by 2031. The current household average is around 11 tonnes, so this represents about a 50 percent
reduction.
To help achieve this goal, Council has launched the Brisbane Carbon Challenge. You
can use the online Carbon Challenge calculator
to find out ways you can reduce your household's energy consumption and track your energy usage over time.
As part of the Challenge, CitySmart are seeking up to 20 "Champion
Households" from Brisbane to take part in a live case study to cut their carbon emissions by 50% over
a year beginning in early 2021. Champion households will be supported by CitySmart with information, tools,
a Home Energy Monitoring System and tailored incentives valued at up to $4500 including GST to help them
achieve this goal.
For more information, visit the Brisbane
Carbon Challenge website.
