MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi everyone

I hope you can join me for the official dedication of the new sandstone, all conflicts memorial wall at Yeronga Memorial Park on Saturday 31 July from 10am. I am so proud to have funded this project and worked with the Stephens RSL to deliver this tribute to Australia's service men and women in recognition of the War Memorial's 100th anniversary this year.

The biennial Peaks to Points Festival is on over the next few weeks with a range of wonderful events highlighting our local environment. Check out the family fun day this Sunday, 18 July from 10am to 3pm at the Oxley Creek Common, Rocklea. If you can't make it on Sunday sign up for a up a bushwalk, sewerage plant tour, attend a tree planting day or help build nesting boxes there's something for everyone. Click here for all the events.

Regards, Nicole.

P.s. new footpath decals have been installed at Active Travel Schools in Sherwood, Yeronga and Graceville to kepe students safe on their way to school!

PARKS UPDATE

Sherwood Arboretum
The nest boxes installed at the Sherwood Arboretum earlier in the year have been put to good use by the local squirrel glider population, with three families of gliders living in the boxes along with several species of birds. This is great news, as gliders require special conditions to live safely in urban environments. Additional nest boxes will be installed in the coming months to further support the local wildlife.

Creek and Waterway Enhancement Projects, Corinda
A waterway enhancement project was recently completed along Pennywort Creek in George Scarlett Park, Corinda. Works along the southern creek bank included planting of ground covers and infill planting to improve biodiveristy and manage erosion. Works on the northern creek bank included mulching, coir netting and planting to manage weed infestations and stabilise the bank. Weed management in this area is ongoing.

Weed management works continue along Oxley Creek in Nosworthy Park, Corinda. Works to date have included management of woody weeds and invasive vines and infill planting with shrubs and ground covers.

Cactoblastis Corner, Sherwood
Following community consultation, the park land on the site of the former Alan Fletcher Research Station at the end of Ferry St, Sherwood has been named Cactoblastis Corner. Please join me and former DPI staff for the official naming of the park on Saturday 31 July from 8am.

Hyde Rd Dog Park
Lighting upgrades and work on the new small dog dog park at the Hyde Rd puppy park, Yeronga are now complete. Both the small and large dog parks are now open for residents to enjoy.

WANT CITYCATS UP THE RIVER? SPEAK UP NOW

Council are currently seeking community feedback to "Identify opportunities to improve ferry services to meet the need of Brisbane's residents, visitors and commuters."

This provides another opportunity for Tennyson Ward residents to speak up for new CityCat Services further up the river. It's an issue raised with me regularly and would be great for recreation, commuters, students and facilities like the Tennis Centre in Tennyson Ward.

I encourage residents to make a submission via email, submit their feedback via the online form (be creative and ask for new services or extensions up the river), or attend one of the drop in sessions to give their feedback in person. In the second box of the survey, you can write where you want the ferry extended to as part of the question "What would encourage you to use the ferry more often?" There are several other sections where you can write comments supporting a CityCat service extension upriver through the survey.

All Confilcts Memorial Wall Unveiling Yeronga Memorial Park

Stephens Sub Branch has erected a new Memorial Wall adjacent to the WW1 Cenotaph in Yeronga Memorial Park, Ipswich Road Yeronga in memory of all men and women who served their country and in honour of those who gave their lives in all wars and conflicts.

BRISBANE METRO CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE DUTTON PARK

Council have notified me that they will be using part of the Dutton Park Recreation Reserve near the Eleanor Schonell Bridge and TJ Memorial Drive to house the charging infrastructure for the battery-electric Brisbane Metro vehicles.

The proposed design includes three charging containers (each 12m long x3m wide x3m high) located on the northern side of the Bridge (indicated in red on the map below). Works are planned to commence from mid-2022. It will look like a large bunker in the Park.

INDOOROOPILLY ROUNDABOUT UPGRADE FINAL DESIGN RELEASED

Council have released the final plans for the $120m Indooroopilly Roundabout Upgrade project with preliminary works due to commence in the coming weeks (see below). The upgrade will include the construction of a t-intersection overpass from Coonan St over Moggill Rd, and Council will maintain the existing left-turn movement from Stamford Rd and allow westbound traffic a left-turn into Stamford Rd from Moggill Rd.

Early works will involve temporary lane closures on Moggilll Rd and Coonan St as required. Main construction works will commence in late 2021, and will take place at night. The project is due for completion in 2024.

I'm still not sure this is the best design as the t-intersection overpass will stop traffic using the Coonan Rd corridor in two locations when completed rather than the current one at the round-a-bout.

BRISBANE'S INDUSTRIAL FUTURE STRATEGY

Council have released a new draft industrial strategy for community consultation as part of the process of reviewing the current Brisbane Industrial Strategy which was implemented in 2019.

Read the draft strategy online and submit your feedback by completing an online survey and/or making a submission to the project team via email strategicplanningindustrial@brisbane.qld.gov.au or post to City Planning and Economic Development (Industrial Strategy Review), Brisbane City Council, GPO Box 1434, Brisbane Qld 4001. Consultation closes 16 August 2021.

Please ensure the following guidelines are observed when placing items on the kerbside for collection:

ROAD AND CONSTRUCTION WORKS

Tree Trimming Works
I have been advised of the following tree trimming works taking place over the coming months:

  • 65 trees along the whole of Appel St, Graceville will be trimmmed by 30 August 2021, as they were impeding footpath and vehicle clearance.
  • 34 trees along the whole of Cansdale St, Yeronga will be trimmed by 30 August 2021, as they were impeding footpath and vehicle clearance.

Road Resurfacing
Council are resurfacing the following streets over the coming weeks:

  • Strong Ave, Graceville, works due for completion by 19 July, weather permitting.

Cross River Rail
Out of hours work will also take place at Fairfield Station intermittently between 10pm and 4:30am each day until approximately the end of August.

A temporary scaffold pedestrian overpass has been installed at Yeronga Station and the existing overpass is closed to pedestrians. Directional signage is in place to assist you in navigating the area.

Yeronga Station is closed until late November 2021 to facilitate station upgrade works. A new bus route (109 StationLink) is replacing the train during this time. Five temporary bus stops have been installed between Moorooka and Boggo Rd Stations, including one at Fairfield Rd, Yeerongpilly; one on Wilkie St, Yeerongpilly; and two on Fairfield Rd, Yeronga.

Seqwater Water Supply Network Maintenance
Seqwater are undertaking the second stage of a major upgrade to the water supply pipe network. Works originally scheduled for early July have been delayed due to the COVID lockdown, and will now take place from Saturday 17 July until Monday 19 July. During this time, you may experience low or fluctuating water pressure and temporary discolouration of the water, however, no loss of water should occur. Water will remain safe to drink. If you experience total loss of water, please phone 13 23 64.
