MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi everyone

I was really delighted to help officially unveil the new all-conflicts memorial wall at Yeronga Memorial Park, pictured. The project recognises Australian service men and women from all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping missions and has been installed to mark the centenary of the adjoining World War One memorial. Thank you to the Stephens RSL and local dad Matt Smith, from Barefoot Landscaping, for delivering the stunning memorial. I am really proud to have funded the project with a $20,000 grant from the Tennyson Ward Suburban Enhancement Fund.

In further good news, the dog park upgrades at George Scarlett Park, Corinda and Hyde Rd, Yeronga are now complete and open for use. Both include dedicated small dog areas and lighting so you can use the park in the evening. Planning is now well under way for the upgrade at Fairfield dog park this year.

Regards, Nicole.

P.s. Thank you to all the residents who contributed to the recent CityCat survey. 414 residents from Tennyson Ward spoke up about bringing CityCats upstream. This was 23% of the total number of submissions -- extraordinary considering you had to be creative to have your say.

WALTER TAYLOR BRIDGE UPDATE

Following an RTI release the 2020 pre-feasibility scoping study for the Walter Taylor Bridge duplication is now publicly available on my website. I am glad it has been publicly released so people can see how inane Council's initial investigation is. They are proposing to:

1. feed all the traffic back into Coonan St at Westminster St, a diabolical intersection that does not work effectively now;
2. ask QR to underground the Indooroopilly Rail Station;
3. potentially demolish the Jack Pesch pedestrian and cycling bridge; and
4. investigate making the Walter Taylor Bridge, and our local roads leading to, it a "freight route".

The study also notes that "all options result in sudden increases in traffic movements as currently diverted trips shift back to the corridor due to improved travel times" p6. It is scary reading and based on the direction the Lord Mayor and Minster for Transport, Mark Bailey, are taking I am very concerned for our community.

A detailed pre-feasibility study is being undertaken in 2021 and I will share the results with you when available. In my view the scoping study is heading in the wrong direction with possibly diabolic outcomes for our local roads. There is no way that Chelmer, Graceville, Sherwood and Oxley should become a freight route. That fact that the Lord Mayor is considering this in the feasibility study shows how out of touch he is.

I know traffic congestion is really bad during school and university terms and increasingly on Saturdays, but it is critical that the solution is not worse than the problem. Attracting trucks and through traffic from the south-western and southern suburbs, a rapidly growing area, could turn Oxley Rd and Honour Ave into Ipswich Rd, especially with the Brisbane Markets nearby in Rocklea. The Report is available to read on my website and I urge everyone to look at what duplicating the Walter Taylor Bridge could mean in reality.

PARKS UPDATE

Yeronga Memorial Park Exercise Equipment
This year Council is investing $100,000 in an upgrade of the exercise equipment in Yeronga Memorial Park. I have asked Council to investigate whether a small, outdoor gym area could be delivered as part of this upgrade instead of the individual pieces of exercise equipment along Villa St. Watch this space for more information.

Yeronga West Half Basketball Court
Thank you to everyone who offered feedback on the preferred location for a half basketball court in Yeronga West. The most popular locations were Hyde Rd Park (54%), Brisbane Cso Reserve (23%) and Orient Rd Park (15%).

Council is now investigating a location for the court near the children's playground next to South's Cricket. This central location is far enough away from houses and in the preferred area as indicated in the survey. Thank you all for your feedback, and I look forward to delivering this project in the next few months.

Cactoblastis Corner, Sherwood

There was a great turn out for the official park naming ceremony for Cactoblastis Corner, Sherwood last month.

The riverfront site at the end of Berry St was the former home of the Prickly Pear Research Board, later renamed the Alan Fletcher Research Station, and played an important role in the management of Prickly Pear in Australia. Many of the former staff and scientists from the Research Station were in attendance at the park naming, including former Director Dr Dane Panetta who helped me cut the ribbon on the park name sign.

Last year, local residents and former staff of the Research Station were invited to vote on a name for the park. They settled on "Cactoblastis Corner" in recognition of the cactus moths that were reared at the site and sent to prickly pear infested areas to erradicate the weed.

SHERWOOD RD SPEED LIMIT SURVEY OUTCOME

Thank you to everyone who took the time to respond to the survey regarding a speed limit reduction along Sherwood Rd between Oxley Rd and Dewar Tce, Sherwood.

Numerous residents have requested improvements to pedestrian facilities through this section of Sherwood Rd. Currently this section of Sherwood Rd is a mix of 50km/h and 60km/h.

A total of 326 people responded to the survey, which asked whether they support a lowering of the speed limit to 40km/h on Sherwood Rd, Sherwood between Oxley Rd and Dewar Tce, through the Sherwood shopping precinct.

The survey results demonstrate strong support for a reduction to 40km/h through this section of Sherwood Rd. 75% of residents surveyed supported the speed reduction.

This section of Sherwood Rd is an extremely busy pedestrian area, with high volumes of both young and elderly pedestrians, servicing:

  • Sherwood State School
  • St Matthew's Church and Sherwood Uniting Church
  • Numerous shops, hospitality venues, essential services and including a major supermarket
  • Sherwood Rail Station
  • Thallon St community precinct, including childcare, kindergartens,  senior's respite, Girl Guides, a park and neighbourhood centre.

Given the strong support for a lowering of the speed limit, I have asked Council to investigate and consult on delivering a 40km/h zone on Sherwood Rd between Oxley Rd and Dewar Tce to improve pedestrian safety. I'll keep you updated as the process unfolds.
