MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi everyone

Let's start with the good news. Congratulations to Gerrard Gosens OAM, an extraordinary local totally blind athlete (three-time Paralympian), chocolatier, adventurer and resident who has been selected to represent Australia in the Para-triathalon at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. He still runs most weeks with the Sherwood Runners in the Arboretum as well as part of his preparation. Our community is right behind you Gerrard.

On less happy news, everyday I am being asked about flood recovery in our community and for peoples' homes. It’s very slow progress so far both at Council and State level.

More than three months on, Council still can’t or won’t tell us when parks and playgrounds will be cleaned up, fixed/remediated and reopened; roads are crumbling or full of potholes; and there is absolutely zero action. To give you some idea of how poor the recovery process is, Council has just put new softfall (mulch) straight over the top of 12 playground areas without removing the flood and sewerage contaminated softfall base first. It is so gross and didn’t happen in 2011. The base, softfall and rubber was removed and properly replaced. Not in 2022 though. I’ve been raising this everyday with Council officers, right up to the Lord Mayor directly. No one it seems is concerned about what may be lurking.

To me it’s appalling the Council still seems to have no recovery plan or timeframe three months post flood. It’s also very frustrating hearing from people who, like me, want answers. None are forthcoming at this stage.

The Lord Mayor estimates flood recovery will cost $330m but can’t say what it is for. Apparently there are no lists of flood damaged playgrounds, parks or roads yet. Dozens of budgeted projects have been cut, including mowing, drainage, road, tree trimming and park projects in Tennyson Ward and around the City, but flood repairs aren’t happening.

The Council Budget is being handed down next Wednesday, so perhaps there will be some clarity and action announced then.

The State has announced its Resilient Homes Fund, including funds for flood resilient repairs, raising your home or buy back. Eligibility criteria has not been announced yet but if you have been flooded in any habitable areas please register now via this link. There is no date as yet for when the funds will start flowing.

There is more on flood recovery below including key contact numbers. I have been meeting with many flooded residents personally. Thanks to Major General Jake Elwood and his team from the QRA who have been out in the ward with me twice in recent weeks seeing the devastation first hand. We are here to help if we can. Please don’t hesitate to contact my office by email or phone for assistance.

Regards, Nicole.

FLOOD RESILIENCE FUNDING

Registration is now open for flood recovery funding to ‘build back better’ via www.qra.qld.gov.au/resilient-homes. The Resilient Residential Recovery Programme will be administered via the State in conjunction with Brisbane City Council.  There will be detailed eligibility criteria but if habitable areas in your home flooded funding will be available for:

  • home resilience assessments;
  • retrofitting homes with flood resilient materials;
  • house raising; and
  • home buy back.

I know many people are unsure of their long-term plans or are still waiting on insurance decisions. I urge you to register now at is it will take some weeks and possibly months before any offers are made. I don't want anyone to miss out down the track.

PARKS UPDATE

Fairfield Park Off Leash Dog Park

Works are underway for the refurbishment of the Fairfield Park off leash dog park. Works include:

  • additional small puppy park;
  • new shelter and taps;
  • turf rehabilitation and new artificial grass to help the trees and wear and tear;
  • fence repairs; and
  • additional lights.

Sherwood Arboretum
The footpath upgrade project is underway in the Sherwood Arboretum. Works include:

  • replacement of cracked footpath with new shared pathway;
  • drainage upgrade alongside footpath in the gardens;
  • returfing central grass area;
  • provide access points on pathway to playground and picnic areas; and
  • replacement planting of any trees moved during footpath construction.

Chelmer Playground Survey Outcome

Earlier in the year, I surveyed Chelmer residents regarding the preferred location, age range and play elements for a playground upgrade in the suburb. Of those who responded, 68% supported an upgrade of the playground at Gordon Thomson Park, Chelmer. 32% supported a playground upgrade at Taylor Bridge Reserve.

Feedback on the playground style was tied between a ninja warrior-style playground and an all abilities playground.  The top five play elements supported in the survey were:

  • shade (51.35%);
  • ninja-style climbing equipment (51.35%);
  • swings (45.95%);
  • fort with slide (40.54%); and
  • agility equipment (37.84%).

I will now be using funds from the 2022-23 local park trust funds to develop a playground upgrade for Gordon Thomson Park. Taylor Bridge Reserve remains on Council's capital works list for a future upgrade.

Thank you everyone for your feedback. There will be further consultation when a concept design is developed later in the year.
