MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi everyone

The Council Budget for 2022-23 was handed down today and it’s a big spending big taxing budget. Rates will increase on average by 5% around the City with some badly flood affected suburbs including Fairfield (5.75%), Oxley (6.61%), Yeronga (6.7%) rising well above average at a time when many families are doing it tough and can least afford it. An extra $1000 rates rebate has been announced for some flooded households and with many homes still empty and likely to be for the long term it is a welcome bit of relief.

Thank you to everyone who has contacted me about when our flood damaged public facilities will reopen. The Budget contains $550m for flood reconstruction and recovery efforts but not a lot of detail as yet.  I’ve been asking almost every day as I know people are keen to get our parks public facilities repaired and reopened. Four months on and Council is still finalising damage assessments. Hopefully the work will start very soon now the Budget has been announced.

There a range of local projects that will be welcome including road resurfacing, park, playground and footpath upgrades. Sadly though, there is still a whopping under-investment in stormwater drainage, flood mitigation and backflow valve projects. We should be investing in these projects now and every year I move motions in the Council budget pushing for more drainage funding that the Lord Mayor and his “ team” vote against. Still no funding for critical local intersection upgrades including at the Graceville Fiveways, Cook St Oxley, the Fairfield Rd round-a-bout and Ipswich Rd/Venner Rd Annerley.

There are a range of big project cost blow outs including the Lord Mayor’s signature bus project the Brisbane Metro which is now a whopping $1.7b, almost double the $950m originally announced several years ago. The City is also carrying record debt, some $2,377 per person. This is forecast to increase even further in coming years. Debt now tops $3bn for the city, up from $0 in 2009. Many projects that weren’t delivered last year  have also been rolled over and reannounced. The Lord Mayor claims this is “responsible financial management."

As always I will be ensuring that the small amount of discretionary funds we do have for local projects are stretched as far as possible. Please read on for a list of the local projects and key city-wide initiatives.

Regards, Nicole

WHAT'S NOT IN THE BUDGET LOCALLY

Each year, as your local Councillor, I put together a budget submission based on feedback from local residents, community groups, schools, Council officers and my own observations. This is submitted to the Lord Mayor who then personally determines what is funded in the Budget.

Some of the projects the Lord Mayor has refused to fund, in some cases now for many years, include:

  • dozens of local road safety and traffic calming projects;
  • a new Sherwood Rd dedicated off-road bikeway and footpath;
  • Graceville Fiveways and Annerley Junction shopping centre improvements;
  • drainage and backflow valves in Chelmer, Graceville, Yeronga, Fairfield and Tennyson; and
  • intersection upgrades to Oxley Rd/Cliveden Ave, Corinda, Ipswich Rd/Venner Rd, Annerley, Fairfield Rd roundabout and the Graceville Fiveways.
  • Graceville Rail Station and Fairfield Rail Station zebra crossings.

Budget estimates information sessions will be held on Friday and Monday and I may have a further update next week. I will keep fighting for important local projects in next year's budget.
