MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi everyone

So many in our community are stuck in limbo at the moment waiting for their insurance company, waiting for the State to announce its resilient homes funding, waiting for builders to fix their homes or for Council to fix their local park. I know that that it’s taking far too long. The silence from the State Government and Council is appalling. Hopefully, the State will be making an announcement very shortly about how the $771m in flood resilience funding will be allocated so we can get moving.

If your insurer is stuffing you around call the Australian Financial Complaints Authority on 1800931678 or online via www.afca.org.au - they are the insurance industry watchdog and can help if your insurer is stuffing you around.

If you haven’t already, please make sure you have registered with Queensland Reconstruction Authority (QRA) for the Flood Resilient Homes package. Funding will be made available to build back better and for buyback www.qra.qld.gov.au/resilient-homes.

In the interim, if you are looking for some fun local activities to do with the family the free Bands in the Park programme has recommenced at the Queensland Tennis Centre with the next free concert A Night at the Proms at 6pm on Saturday, 16 July.  The fabulous St Joseph’s, Corinda Fete is on Sunday 31 July.

Don’t forget if you are looking for some refuge from the cold with the kids, Council libraries are warm, inviting, have free wi-fi and great school holiday programmes.

Amidst the gloom there is some fun and hope.

Regards, Nicole.

P.s. in some good news, Translink has agreed to our request to add two extra stops to the new 109 bus service to assist local residents, including the vision impaired community at Link Vision. The new stops are located at 14a (Fairfield Rd/Fenton St northbound and southbound).

KERBSIDE COLLECTION

Commencing Monday 22 August, 2022, Council will be conducting a Kerbside Large Item Collection Service for Tennyson Ward residents in Chelmer, Corinda, Graceville, Oxley and Sherwood.

Items can be left on the kerbside one day prior to the collection commencement date.

Please ensure the following guidelines are observed when placing items on the kerbside for collection:

  • the piles are tidy so the footpath and/or roadway is kept clear;
  • piles are no larger than two cubic metres (equal to a small box trailer load);
  • doors must be removed from refrigerators and cupboards;
  • no sharp or dangerous objects;
  • secure items if severe weather is expected; and
  • items must be able to be easily and safely lifted by two people.

Council will not collect unacceptable items placed on the kerb and illegal dumping fines may apply if unacceptable material is not removed. Unacceptable items include the following:

  • vegetation, dirt, stone, bricks, potted plants;
  • construction waste;
  • asbestos;
  • car parts and tyres;
  • general household waste;
  • liquids and hazardous waste (paint, chemicals);
  • gas bottles; and
  • glass and mirrors.

Kerbside collection for residents in Annerley, Fairfield, Tennyson, Yeronga and Yeerongpilly commences in the week starting Monday 24 April, 2023.

PARKS UPDATE

Francis Outlook, Corinda

Work is underway on a tree management plan for Francis Outlook, Corinda. The tree management plan will include a mapped tree inventory, plant health care recommendations (pruning, mulching, fertilisation, cabling etc.) and a historical study of the original planting plan to determine whether any original trees were not replaced in the past. This year, Council will be investing $160,000 to undertake heritage restoration works to the gravestones, memorial and fencing to help preserve this historic memorial park.

Last year, I was really pleased to work with the Oxley-Chelmer History Group and Francis family descendants to install interpretive signage sharing the history of the extraordinary family after whom the park is named.

Hives Park, Sherwood

Construction is about to begin on the $140,000 playground upgrade at Hives Park, Sherwood. Works are scheduled for completion by the end of the month, weather permitting.

HONOUR AVE PEDESTRIAN REFUGE

Construction has commenced for the new pedestrian refuge on Honour Ave, Chelmer near Chelmer Station. Works will include:

  • a new pedestrian refuge crossing;
  • installation of yellow no stopping lines and upgrade of road markings to ensure access and sight lines are maintained;
  • installation of new kerb ramps and upgrades to a small section of footpath; and
  • turfing.

One tree near 147 Honour Ave, Chelmer will require removal to accommodate the project. Offset planning will take place elsewhere in the Ward.

Works will take place 7am to 5pm, Monday to Friday and are due for completion by mid-August 2022.

GOLD STARS

The 2022 Gold Star Reading Club program for children aged 6-12 years and the Little Stars Reading Club program for children aged 0-5 years has begun again this year and runs until 31 July.

The program provides fun, incentive based reading activities for children to improve their literacy and reading skills. Membership is free and you can register at your local library.

By reading for a minimum of 10 minutes a day and completing 10 reading challenges, children will receive a medallion and a certificate of achievement at the end of the programme at an awards ceremony.

To find out more about the program, visit Council's website here  or sign up at the Annerley, Corinda or Fairfield Library now!
