MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi everyone

The end of the year is fast approaching and there are so many great local events coming up in our community. Check them out below and I hope to see you at some of them over the coming weeks.

In some interesting news, Council has announced an extension of the e-scooter trial to parts of Annerley, Fairfield and Yeronga. Apparently, the e-scooters are designed to help people get to the Buranda and Greenslopes Rail Bus. I think the planners have got lost somewhat if that’s their aim. If you do try an e-scooter as part of the trial please be careful, leave your scooter is a safe place not blocking the footpath and watch out for pedestrians. Check out all the details below.

I am calling in the poor state of footpaths and damaged roads as fast as I can but it’s been very slow getting them properly repaired by Council. It's frustrating because just getting a pothole filled, like on Honour Ave Sherwood, has taken four requests and it's still not great. If you see a broken footpath or potholed street please call Council directly on 3403 8888 or my office on 3403 8605 to report them.

The playground upgrade at Hives Park, Sherwood is now open with the new bubblers and bins to be installed in coming weeks.

Regards, Nicole.

P.s. Council is undertaking a playground at Robinson Park, Fairfield. I've talked them into listening to our community, but we only have a week to get our feedback in. Fill out the survey here and have your say on upgrading this popular local playground.

E-SCOOTER EXTENSION TRIAL

Council has announced that the current e-scooter mobility trial is being extended to parts of Fairfield, Yeronga and Annerley for the next 12 months. The aim of the trial is to help residents access the “ last mile” to Buranda and Greenslopes Bus Stations. The trial area is actually up to 4km away from these bus stations and there are much closer public transport nodes for bus users on Ipswich Rd and multiple rail stations. Council officers have also advised me they don’t work well on hills...

The trial commences on 14 November, 2022 for 12 months.

I know e-scooters are very popular and they can be a very useful option, but it’s critical that they are used safely both for the riders themselves and pedestrians. I believe this project trial could have been better scoped and its purpose clearer. I have placed on the record my concerns about the following issues, which Council has ignored and announced they are going ahead with the trial anyway:

  • no geo-tagged parking locations have been identified in the trial area to ensure scooters are parked safely when not in use;
  • no footpaths and/or bikeways are being upgraded;
  • scooter removal when footpaths are blocked can take days and Council does not remove them — you have to contact the scooter provider directly;
  • the scooter south-western boundary at Fairfield Rd, Yeerongpilly is about 5km from the nominated bus stations;
  • scooters don’t work well on hills;
  • there’s no advice on local destination parking areas at key venues or locations within the trial zone which would be helpful; and
  • our low vision, blind and disabled community has not been consulted and will be at risk.

If you participate in the trial please be very careful for your own safety and that of others. Let’s cross our fingers no one is hurt and Council will put in place some safeguards to ensure that e-scooters are both practical and safe for local use.

BRISBANE'S NEW BUS NETWORK

If you rely on a Council bus service it is critical that you check out the changes to bus services proposed by the Lord Mayor as part of his big bendy bus project, the $1.8billion Brisbane Metro. There are major changes proposed to buses in almost all suburbs. This is really disturbing news and I welcome feedback from residents about how you may be affected by these changes.

Some of the key changes in Tennyson Ward include:

  • 105 and 108 services are being amalgamated
  • 105 will be truncated at the PA Hospital and will no longer travel through Yeronga
  • 107 becomes an all-day city service that starts in Yeerongpilly instead of Indooroopilly
  • 192 City to UQ service will be extended through Yeronga to Yeerongpilly
  • Multiple changes to Ipswich Rd corridor service routes and destination
  • There do not appear to be any changes to the 100, 102, 104, 106, 196 Buz routes

The biggest shortcoming is the lack of timetable information aside from service start and finish times.

What’s missing?

  • additional night and weekend services
  • no new Buz services
  • no direct bus service between Yeronga and Indooroopilly
  • bus options for Oxley residents

I am concerned that Council, in its own materials, indicates that about 10% of all existing bus travellers will actually be worse off or have no alternatives.

You can view further information on the proposed changes on the Brisbane City Council website here which includes an online interactive map.

To have your say:

  • Saturday 12 November, 10am-12pm at Pamphlett-Tennyson Sea Scouts Den, 284 Graceville Ave, Graceville;
  • Saturday 24 November, 11am-1pm at Indooroopilly Library, Level 4, 322 Moggill Rd, Indooroopilly (Further sessions available and listed on the Council website here);
  • call 1800 692 333 (business hours);

FIX YEERONGPILLY DRAINAGE PETITION

Over the past year, Brisbane City Council has been undertaking a drainage investigation in Yeerongpilly following complaints from residents about stormwater drainage problems in some streets including South St and Albermarle St.

Stormwater runs off from Yeronga Memorial Park to Moolabin Creek via a low point in South St, Yeerongpilly causing localised flooding to several homes.

As a result, Council has identified that a significant capital works project is needed to upgrade the stormwater drainage pipes between School Rd and Moolabin Creek as well as around an exposed drainage gully near Yeronga Memorial Pool.

This Lord Mayor, who personally determines what goes in the Budget, woefully underinvests in stormwater drainage upgrades with only around $30m spent each year for the whole city for new drains, upgrades and drainage maintenance projects. There are local projects in the Ward that have been waiting a decade or longer.

I am asking for your help to sign the petition calling on Council to invest in the stormwater drainage upgrade for Yeerongpilly as a matter of urgency. No one should have to worry whether their living rooms, laundries and yards will flood every time there is heavy rain. Please support your neighbours and sign the ePetition on Council's website here. Alternatively, you can sign a hardcopy of the petition at my office at Fairfield Gardens, 180 Fairfield Rd, Fairfield. The petition closes on 30 November 2022.

CAWONGA PARK, OXLEY FOOTPATH ART PROJECT

The interactive community footpath art project in Cawonga Park, Oxley is well underway, with local artist Kim Woolley and Oxley legend Marilyn Roberts working away to bring it to life. The design features interactive games for the kids promoting literacy and numeracy, native animals and lots of beautiful graphics and colour.

I'm really pleased to be funding this project through the Tennyson Ward Suburban Enhancement Fund which is used for local, park and footpath upgrades around the ward.

If you're free on a Monday, Tuesday, Friday or Saturday and would like to lend a hand, please give Marilyn a call on 0458 598 683. If you can colour in, you've got all the skills you need.

Work is now underway on the major remediation and upgrade to the main oval for the Graceville Normanby Hounds at Bert St Clair Oval. The $447,000 to improve the sporting field is due to be completed January 2023.
