MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi everyone, Happy New Year.

I hope you had a wonderful break with your friends and family over the summer holidays. I know our community feels a huge amount of sympathy for our central Qld neighbours who are experiencing devastating floods now, while many in our local community are still waiting insurance and repair works to their own homes. The Queensland Resilience Homes Fund is still rolling out assistance and our community centres in Yeronga, Graceville and Sherwood are still offering a helping hand.

Plus, fabulous local resident and author Kate Wall, has released her ebook, Gardening After a Flood free for the community. You can download it from Kate's website here. The book is based on her professional and volunteer work after the 2011 floods with the wonderful Helen. Kate is also running workshops in BCC libraries and through the Yeronga Community Centre — don't miss these.

I have strongly protested the State Government’s decision to close the intersection of Annerley Rd and Cornwall St, Annerley from Monday, for six months, as part of the Cross River Rail project. The diversion will force east-bound traffic to divert south down Noble St, do a u-turn then head back up Fairfield Rd to the cemetery intersection to go east. This is impractical and dangerous and will force more traffic into congested Fairfield Rd as well as cause issues for ambulances and police. It is a really bad decision with huge knock-on impacts for traffic flows and pedestrian safety. Join me in emailing the Transport Minister and local member, Mark Bailey, miller@parliament.qld.gov.au  about this and brace yourself for more traffic chaos on Fairfield Rd next week.

Regards, Nicole.

PARKS UPDATE

Fairfield Park

Some great new improvements are on the way for Fairfield Park this year. Five new melaleuca trees (native paperbark) will be planted in March in different areas of the park. These trees will be monitored over the following 24 months with focus on their establishment factors in the contaminated & waterlogged soil, with the end goal to plant more trees in the future within the park. Tree planting sites have been marked with a blue X.

Council are also installing a tree prop on the severely leaning Jacaranda in the park near the playground in March.

Works to widen the footpath through Fairfield Park to improve access are scheduled to commence in February.

Bin upgrades are underway over the coming months in the following parks throughout the Ward:

  • Existing wheelie bins replaced with skillion bin enclosures in Robinson Park, Fairfield;
  • Existing wheelie bins replaced with skillion bin enclosures in J.F. O'Grady Memorial Park, Fairfield;
  • Existing wheelie bins replaced with skillion bin enclosures and additional recycling bin in Hyde Rd Park, Yeronga;
  • Existing wheelie bins replaced with skillion bin enclosures and two additional recycling bins in John Walker Place, Yeronga; and
  • A new general waste bin along the footpath near the BMX track at Chelmer Recreation Reserve, Chelmer.

CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY

Clean Up Australia Day is fast approaching and residents are encouraged to get involved and help clean up our local parks, streets and bushland.

Visit www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au  to either register a clean-up site or join an existing local clean-up site and receive a clean-up kit for use on the day.

In the interim some local residents are planning a community clean up from 7:30am on Sunday 29 January at Robinson Park, Fairfield followed by a BYO plate community brunch. Registration is from 7:30am in the Robinson Park carpark off Sydney St, Fairfield.  There will be prizes for most rubbish picked up, weirdest rubbish picked up and best hat.

ACTIVE TRAVEL FOR ANNERLEY

Don't forget to sign the petition for protected bike lanes, safer speed limits and safer crossings on Annerley Rd from BSSSC to Ipswich Rd.

The proposed changes would extend the Woollongabba Bikeway south along Annerley Road and make it easier and safer for locals to access schools, work, parks and local businesses by bike or walking. More people cycling would also take more cars off Annerley Road in peak hours.

I have been campaigning for many years for pedestrian safety upgrades around Dutton Park Station and it is great that Active Travel for Annerley have got on board to support both bike and pedestrian safety improvements in our local community.

The petition, and further background information can be found here.

Active Travel for Annerley can be found on Facebook here.

SAM SIGN UPDATE

Cansdale St, Yeronga is posted as 50km/h. The sign collected data for an 11 week period from 7 June to 27 August, 2022. During this time 386,297 vehicles (av. 4,769 per day) passed through the portable speed sign zone.

100,069 or 25.9% of all drivers were recorded travelling above the posted speed limit. Of the vehicles speeding, 85% were travelling at or below 59km/h. When prompted, speeding drivers reduced their speeds by an average of 0km to 59km/h within the speed camera range..

Please slow down around busy school and pedestrian hot spots!

ROAD AND CONSTRUCTION WORKS

Community Facility Recovery Works

11 sporting clubs throughout the Ward have successfully applied for joint State and Council funding to assist with recovery of their Council-owned facilities following the 2022 floods as part of the Community and Recreational Assets Recovery and Resilience Program. Works will include field renovations and remediations and/or building repairs at the following organisations:

  • Brisbane Rugby Leagues Referees Association, Fairfield;
  • Carrington Boat Club, Corinda;
  • Corinda Horse and Pony Club, Corinda;
  • Sherwood Football Club, Chelmer;
  • Oxley United Soccer Club, Oxley;
  • South Brisbane District Cricket Club, Fairfield;
  • Hellenic Sports Centre, Yeronga;
  • Kenmore AFL and Western Districts Cricket Club (Chelmer Sports), Chelmer;
  • Graceville Normanby United Sports Club, Graceville; and
  • Souths Junior Cricket Club, Fairfield.

Cliveden Ave Reserve Pontoon Repairs

Council have advised that extensive repairs are required to the pontoon gangway access in Cliveden Ave Reserve, Corinda. Planning is underway and the pontoon will remain temporarily closed in the interim.

Cross River Rail

Fairfield station is now open with access via the stairs only.

From Monday 23 January 2023, the right turn into Cornwall St from Annerley Rd northbound will be closed for approximately six months to facilitate construction of a piled retaining wall near the Annerley Rd and Cornwall St intersection as part of the Dutton Park station upgrade. A signed detour will be in place via Noble St, Fairfield Rd, Cornwall St and Annerley Rd. Vehicles travelling southbound on Annerley Rd will still be able to turn left into Cornwall St. I've registered an official complaint with the Transport Minister and local member, Mark Bailey, about this decision as it will adversely affect traffic on Fairfield Rd and Annerley Rd heading east.
