MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Every day I am contacted by residents seeking upgrades local footpaths, bikeways and roads.  There is a very long waiting list, as the Lord Mayor, who controls the Council and its Budget, is simply not investing enough into projects into the suburbs in Tennyson Ward and other parts of the city. He currently has Olympics fever and has just spent $21,000 on a junket to visit the US and Canada and look at air taxis of all things. Meanwhile, dangerous intersections are not being fixed, roads are not being resurfaced, new bikeways and footpaths are not being built, major projects like the Brisbane Metro have almost doubled in cost, and your rates are skyrocketing!

Last week at Council the Lord Mayor rubber stamped the State Government’s decision to allow rooming accommodation and boarding homes in low density suburbs. I did not vote for this change to City Plan as I have seen first hand the adverse impacts of inappropriately-built boarding houses in low and low to medium density areas. I appreciate that we have a housing supply problem, but jamming boarding houses into the wrong locations will not solve this problem in a constructive way.

I will keep pushing for all the local improvements we need, but the biggest roadblock at the moment is the Lord Mayor who has forgotten his job is to run our city and not the Olympics.

Regards Nicole.

Ps...Almost every intersection along Oxley Rd is listed for improvements — Wharf St, Chelmer, The Graceville Fiveways, Cook St, Oxley Statin Rd — but the bottlenecks at Cliveden Ave and Oxley Rd are diabolical and are contributing to rat running through the back street of Corinda. Please sign the petition below and help put pressure on Council to fix this dodgy intersection and install turning lanes and arrows.

PARKS UPDATE

Fanny St Park, Annerley

Planning is well underway on the park upgrade for Fanny St Park, Annerley. The Annerley Stephens History Group have been busy researching the history of the park and the surrounding area for the interpretive signage project. The upgrade will also include:

  • nesting boxes;
  • seating; and
  • new plantings throughout the park.

Robinson Park, Fairfield

Thank you to everyone who responded to the survey regarding a new playground for Robinson Park, Fairfield. Planning is now underway for a new all ages playground which will feature new swings, a slide and a junior ninja-style climbing apparatus.

John Walker Place, Yeronga

Works on the new outdoor gym at John Walker Place, Yeronga are scheduled to start in April.

Nixon Park, Oxley

New banner poles are being installed in Nixon Park, Oxley this week. These will be available for use by community and not for profit  groups and schools to promote upcoming events for two week blocks. To reserve use of the banner poles, please email my office on tennyson.ward@bcc.qld.gov.au or call 3403 8605.

Sherwood Arboretum

Footpath improvements are underway in the Sherwood Arboretum to replace the old footpath leading to the toilets. Works are scheduled for completion this week.

YERONGA PDA

I was really pleased to attend the sod turning of the Yeronga Priority Development site this morning.

Great news is the first building will be the permanent home for the Yeronga Community Centre, the All Gauge Model Railway Club and the Annerley-Stephens History Group. The future site will include a retirement village and nursing home, townhouses, healthcare services and affordable and social housing.

EPETITION: CORINDA INTERSECTION UPGRADE

For well over a decade, I have been asking Council to undertake a major upgrade of the Cliveden Ave and Oxley Rd intersection at Corinda. It is one of my key local budget requests to Council annually. The current intersection is dysfunctional and congested and hinders the efficient and safe movement of traffic during school peak periods as well as the evening peak hour. Of the 3,400 intersections in Brisbane, Cliveden Ave sits at no 439 on the crash list and is the 7th most dangerous intersection in Tennyson Ward.

It is essential that the intersection is upgraded to install new traffic lights with fully controlled turning arrows and turning lanes in all directions. Corinda State School was moved to its current location several decades ago to provide additional space for road upgrades that have never been delivered.

I am fighting for the improvements our community needs but I need your help to keep the pressure on the Lord Mayor and Council to make sure this important intersection upgrade is delivered. There are millions of dollars for marketing or projects like the Metro, with no local benefits, while important local intersection improvements that would help Oxley Road, and the surrounding streets function better are ignored.

Sign the ePetition online via Council’s website here.

Hardcopies of the petition are available from my office.

Yeronga Waterway Rejuvenation Petition

It's the last chance to sign the ePetition from local resident Kate Wall calling on Council to rejuvenate  the waterway that traverses through and adjacent to Hyde Road Park, Fehlberg Park, and Leyshon Park, Yeronga.

The petition closes today on Monday, 20 February. You can sign Kate's ePetition here.
