MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi everyone,

A big thank you to all our wonderful volunteers who work tirelessly behind the scenes in Tennyson Ward community, seniors, environmental and sporting groups;  churches; and schools. This week is National Volunteer Week and we're so thankful and proud of all your efforts helping make our local community fun, inclusive and resilient.

In some good news, the Federal Government has announced a $236m project to upgrade the National Flood Warning Network. This will include around 1500 new and upgraded gauges in Queensland all connected to the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM). It’s hard to believe that only about 1/3 of flood gauges are owned by the BOM, who forecast the weather including the severity of natural disasters, while others are owned variously by Council and the State Government. This will bring them under one organisation which should provide a more effective system.

The lack of warning about the 2022 flood was one of the biggest short comings by Council. The failure to identify the flood and communicate warnings in a timely way has been devastating for our community.

I will be pushing to ensure this investment includes Oxley Creek, not just the Brisbane River, as it floods in advance of the river itself.  So far, the Lord Mayor has refused to support a flood warning plan for Oxley Creek saying the existing system “works well”. This approach is mind-boggling given the failures identified in the De Jersey Report and the Inspector General’s Report after the 2022 floods. Clearly it doesn’t work well, and I will work with the Federal Government to make sure we are included in the upgrade.

In other flood news we are still waiting for repairs to Cactoblastis Corner in Sherwood, replacement of the Sherwood Arboretum pontoon, drainage upgrades in Yeronga and replacement of the Taylor Bridge Reserve children’s playground. 15 months on I am pushing Council for these repairs, but the Lord Mayor and the LNP are blocking motions supporting the repairs and attacking me rather than answering simple questions about when these community assets will be repaired.

Regards, Nicole.

Ps... Like you, I'm still digesting the Walter Taylor Bridge duplication study released by Council last week. I know this is a huge issue for our area, but I'm not sure Council has got it right. I'll have a full update coming out in the next few weeks.

PARKS UPDATE

Work is underway on the new playground upgrade in Robinson Park, Fairfield. The new playground will feature basket, toddler and junior swings; ninja-themed climbing walls; a spider web climbing module; and a treehouse themed fort with monkey bars and slides. This exciting upgrade is scheduled for completion in the coming weeks, weather permitting.

Work on the fitness station at John Walker Place, Yeronga is scheduled to commence in July. Apologies for the delay due to weather and supply chain issues. The fitness station will include a butterfly press, pull up bar, chin up bars, leg press, box jump, sit up board, trapeze rings, body twist, step up, cycle seat and resistance hooks.

A nesting box and new sandstone seating blocks have been installed at Fanny St Park, Annerley. Annerley Stephens History Group have researched and developed interpretive signage for the park exploring the history of the area, and I look forward to its installation in the near future.

The new shade sails are in place over the playgrounds at Nixon Park, Oxley and Ed Kuepper Park, Oxley.  There's still time to complete the online survey to provide feedback for planning for a new playground at Nixon Park, Oxley here, so keep your great ideas coming. Nixon Park is a hugely popular park for families in the district and the playground desperately needs an upgrade.

At the Sherwood Arboretum, Council is expanding the hugely successful nesting boxes programme to include turtle nesting islands.  Seven turtle nesting sites will be built on the islands to provide safe nesting habitat for the three turtle species active in the area - Broad Shelled Turtle, Macquarie Turtle and Eastern Long Necked Turtle.

HONOUR AVE SPEED LIMIT SURVEY OUTCOME

Thank you to everyone who took the time to respond to the survey regarding a speed limit reduction along Honour Ave, Chelmer/Graceville/Sherwood.

A total of 444 people responded to the survey, which asked whether they support a lowering of the speed limit on Honour Ave to 40km/h through the Graceville SCIP (Wylie St to Mortlake Rd); a lowering of the speed limit to 50km/h along the entirety of Honour Ave; retention of the existing 60km/h speed limit (except the existing 40km/h section at the southern end approaching Sherwood Station); or other. The results were as follows:

60% of respondents indicated their support for some form of speed limit reduction on Honour Ave, and 49% of respondents supported lowering the speed limit through the Graceville SCIP to 40km/h.

Honour Ave is an extremely busy thoroughfare, with high volumes of both young and elderly pedestrians, servicing:

  • Sherwood, Graceville and Chelmer train stations;
  • Local schools, churches and community groups; and
  • Numerous shops, hospitality venues in the Graceville SCIP between Wylie St and Mortlake Rd.

Given the strong support for a lowering of the speed limit through the Graceville SCIP, I have asked Council to investigate and consult on delivering a speed limit reduction on Honour Ave, Graceville through the Graceville SCIP to improve pedestrian, bike and vehicle safety. I'll keep you updated as the process unfolds. I hope Council will listen to our requests as a community this time. Thank you so much for responding to the survey.

EPETITION: RESURFACE OXLEY ROAD, OXLEY

Despite repeated requests to resurface Oxley Rd, multiple major floods in 2011 and 2022, and obvious defects including large cracks, sunken sections, potholes, grass growing out of the road surface and a lot of black superglue, Council has failed to take action to ensure the road is safe for vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians. According to Council, "it doesn't meet the standard for intervention" despite its appalling condition.

Hundreds of roads were resurfaced after the 2022 flood but Oxley Rd has been ignored. I don't think this is good enough.

Please sign the petition on Council’s website calling on Council to undertake resurfacing of Oxley Rd, Oxley in the upcoming 2023-24 Council Budget as a matter of priorityLet's send the Lord Mayor a clear message that we want action on local road upgrades to make them safer for our local community.

I hope that by speaking up as a community Council will listen to our feedback.
