MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi everyone,

The 2023-24 Council Budget was handed down today and what a triumph of spin over substance it is from this tired and out of touch Lord Mayor.

Household rates are going up yet again on average 3.5%, capped at a whopping 7.5%. Four suburbs Annerley, Oxley, Yeronga and Yeerongpilly will all experience above average increases again this year.  Locally we are getting less and paying more - to coin Kerry Packer’s immortal dig at the Federal Government ‘I can tell you they are not spending it that well that we should be donating extra’. The good news is, early payment and pensioner rates rebates have been continued, and over summer, a pool visit will cost just $2pp.

Similarly, the Lord Mayor has triumphed the 50% cut to green waste bin fees to $45 but forgot to mention he is jacking up the general waste charge for wheelie bins by 7% to $409 per year.

There are only a few bright sparks in the Budget locally including $2.2m for the Sherwood Arboretum upgrade, rolled into a lump sum because of delivery delays, $1m to resurface the treacherous Venner Rd, Annerley and $1.8m for stormwater drainage capacity upgrades in Chelmer. Read on for a full list of local projects below.

Otherwise, the Budget is littered with city-wide and local projects that the Lord Mayor and Council failed to deliver last year and have re-announced this year including the Gordon Thompson Park remediation project, Princess St Park upgrades and the JPSS road safety upgrade.

Flood recovery is slowly creeping forward with stormwater drainage repairs and park, pontoon and playground replacements still ongoing. Sadly, Council is refusing to fix Cactoblastis Corner, a severely damaged riverfront park in Sherwood, and replace the flood-damaged pontoon in Yeronga. It is not good enough from a Lord Mayor bedazzled by the Olympics and the $1.7 billion botched Metro project rather than basic road, park and community upgrades in the suburbs.

There are no new playground projects or intersection upgrades in Tennyson Ward. The only funding available will be the Suburban Enhancement Fund, which despite costs skyrocketing, remains largely the same. This means there is less money to spend locally on footpath, park, community and road projects. I will stretch it as far as possible with projects including the Gordon Thompson Park, Chelmer Ninja Warrior Playground, Princess St Park, Fairfield nesting boxes and a new footpath for Berry St, Sherwood already underway.

Regards, Nicole.

WHAT'S NOT IN THE BUDGET LOCALLY

Each year, as your local Councillor, I put together a budget submission based on feedback from local residents, community groups, schools, Council officers and my own observations. This is submitted to the Lord Mayor who then personally determines what is funded in the Budget.

Some of the projects the Lord Mayor has refused to fund, in some cases now for many years, include:

  • dozens of local pedestrian, road safety and traffic calming projects;
  • a new Sherwood Rd dedicated off-road bikeway (footpath under construction);
  • Graceville Fiveways and Annerley Junction shopping centre improvements;
  • drainage and backflow valves in Chelmer, Graceville, Yeronga, Yeerongpilly, Fairfield and Tennyson;
  • intersection upgrades to Oxley Rd/Cliveden Ave, Corinda, Ipswich Rd/Venner Rd, Annerley, Fairfield Rd roundabout, the Graceville Fiveways, and Annerley Rd/Noble St, Annerley;
  • Nixon Park, Oxley playground upgrade; and
  • Graceville Rail Station and Fairfield Rail Station zebra crossings.

Budget estimates information sessions will be held on Friday and Monday and I may have a further update next week. I will keep fighting for important local projects in next year's budget.
