MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi everyone

I am proud to work closely with the three veteran’ s organisations in Tennyson Ward, the Stephens, Yeronga/Dutton Park and Sherwood/Indooroopilly RSLA Sub-branches. The veterans volunteer their time at our local schools, undertake hospital visits to make sure no veterans are alone and host commemorative services around the ward on significant days like ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day.

I was chuffed to be invited to Ron Viles' (Korean War) 90th birthday recently, pictured. Ron served as secretary of the Stephens RSL for many years and is a life member of the Sub-branch. Happy Birthday Ron and a big thank you to all the wonderful local veterans in our community. A big congrats as well to the Sherwood Indooroopilly RSL who recently celebrated their 104th annual luncheon on Sunday.

There are some FREE great events coming up around the Ward in coming weeks. Check out all the details below. I hope to see you at one of the upcoming Movies in the Park at Graceville SS on 21 October and JPSS on 11 November, or fun and creative festivals like Junction Fest in Annerley on 14 October and the amazing Sherwood Festival on 18 November.

Regards, Nicole.

PS...think Oxley Rd is in bad shape and needs resurfacing? So many people have contacted me about the grass, potholes and black glue but Council has NO plans to do any resurfacing. Sign the petition below and send them a message that Council needs to properly fix Oxley Rd.

HELP FIX OXLEY ROAD

Like many residents who use Oxley Rd every day I have noticed it is in terrible shape - full of cracks, potholes, slumps and is being held together with black superglue. There is even grass growing though the road in places in Graceville and Oxley.

Recently, I asked the Lord Mayor a question about why Oxley Rd is not being resurfaced, even where it was flooded. In response, he said that Oxley Rd was not a priority and resurfacing was not needed. I imagine he has not driven along Oxley Rd recently. Or perhaps he thinks it will be cheaper to mow than resurface. Even if Council started resurfacing works this year it could be up to 5-6 years before the entire length is done, as major roads are usually resurfaced progressively by suburb in Council’s annual Budget.

I believe that resurfacing Oxley Rd is a priority to make it safer for our local community. Sign the petition and help me send a message to Council that Oxley Rd needs to be resurfaced in Oxley, Corinda, Sherwood, Graceville and Chelmer.

TREE PROJECTS

Corinda Library

The three Camphor Laurel trees outside Corinda Library have been closely monitored by Council over the past year due to their declining health. The trees have ‘collar rot’ from their constricted root ball area within the raised garden bed. Council is working on a short-term plan to ensure the area remains safe with major trimming and dead wooding to occur in coming weeks. Longer-term, Council is looking at a plan to habitat the existing trees, as they provide valuable bird hollows, and plant new natives to re-establish the garden.

Sherwood Arboretum

In terrible news, seven Kauri Pines along the Avenue in the Sherwood Arboretum are dead, believed drowned from a combination of the 2022 floods, ongoing high-water table and high salinity levels. The trees will be replaced within two months of removal. Work also continues on a number of great environmental upgrades in the Arboretum including an additional 30 new nest-boxes to support local wildlife being installed and another 200 tree name labels to be mounted on significant trees.

Following the success of FOSAA’ s National Tree Planting Day in July, where local school children planted 20 new native trees including a significant Coolamon Tree, another planting event is planned for students as part of Arbour Day celebrations in October.

Sherwood Rd Shopping Precinct

On a brighter note, work was recently completed on the garden bed upgrades in the Sherwood Rd Shopping Centre to help the Jacaranda trees thrive.

Fairfield Rd, Yeronga

The large tree that fell over outside the Yeronga RSL has now been replaced with three new native Tulipwood trees.

And don't forget that every Brisbane resident is entitled to two FREE native trees to plant at home. Pop into my office with your most recent rates notice to collect your free trees and help green up our suburbs.
