MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi Everyone

As many people can see, there is still a lot of flood recovery going on around the ward.  Following the State’s assessment process through the Resilient Homes Fund, Council is now involved in buy-back negotiations with many residents around the ward in some of the worst affected flood areas. Buy back blocks are being converted to parkland and won’t be built on again. I know many people are still battling to find builders and resolve insurance issues. It’ s been a very difficult 18 months for many since the 2022 floods. There is still some help available, so please contact my office if you need a referral.

In some good news, work is starting this week on a new playground at Taylor Bridge Reserve, Chelmer to replace the twice flooded play area. Works include a new nature play area, swings and seating. Sadly, Cactoblastis Corner, a riverfront park in Sherwood, remains catastrophically damaged and Council will not provide a time frame for remediation. It’s incredibly frustrating to see this parkland the community fought so hard to preserve so damaged. It is the last park in Brisbane to remain closed post the floods, and the Lord Mayor and his team have voted against my motions in Council to fix the park.  I will keep pushing to ensure our community fully recovers from the flood within two years as promised.

Finally, congratulations to the magnificent Stephens Croquet Club who celebrate their centenary this month. I am very proud to be the Patron of the Stephens and Graceville Croquet Clubs (104 years old) as they provide fantastic fellowship and recreation for older people in our community. We are so lucky to have a wide range of brilliant sporting clubs for all ages around the ward. Want to join? Check them out on my website here.

Regards, Nicole.

Ps...there are so many wonderful events on in community over the next few weeks, check them out below. I hope to see you at one of them.

HELP FIX OXLEY ROAD

Like many residents who use Oxley Rd every day I have noticed it is in terrible shape - full of cracks, potholes, slumps and is being held together with black superglue. There is even grass growing though the road in places in Graceville and Oxley.

Recently, I asked the Lord Mayor a question about why Oxley Rd is not being resurfaced, even where it was flooded. In response, he said that Oxley Rd was not a priority and resurfacing was not needed. I imagine he has not driven along Oxley Rd recently. Or perhaps he thinks it will be cheaper to mow than resurface. Even if Council started resurfacing works this year it could be up to 5-6 years before the entire length is done, as major roads are usually resurfaced progressively by suburb in Council’s annual Budget.

I believe that resurfacing Oxley Rd is a priority to make it safer for our local community. Sign the petition and help me send a message to Council that Oxley Rd needs to be resurfaced in Oxley, Corinda, Sherwood, Graceville and Chelmer.

2024 LOCAL HEROES AWARDS

Nominations are now open for the ‘Local Heroes’ Awards which recognise the extraordinary contribution of volunteers, our local heroes, who work tirelessly in our community. Please nominate someone you know who works for our community.

The Awards are open to volunteers living in or active members of a community group based in Tennyson Ward and/or Moorooka Ward in the Brisbane City Council area. The Awards recognise the work of volunteers whose selfless efforts have helped to improve the lives of others and/or those who have helped to build community spirit, resilience and identity in our local area. Up to ten people will be recognised annually.

Nomination forms are available from my office or online here and must be submitted by Friday, 15 December 2023. Submit entries to tennyson.ward@bcc.qld.gov.au  and/or moorooka.ward@bcc.qld.gov.au.

Recipients will be announced Friday, 26 January 2024 at the 2024 Oxley Community Festival, Oxley Bowls Club, Englefield Rd, Oxley.

WASTESMART PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD — VOTING NOW OPEN

The ROTATE initiative includes a Facebook page and weekly pick up service for hard-to-recycle items, and on average the group diverts 20kg of waste form landfill each week.
