MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi everyone

Whilst the recent Council Budget is fairly low on major projects for the Ward, there is a city-wide pools upgrade on the way. Whilst I wish it was more water parks for children, Council and the Federal Government are jointly funding a $4m project to undertake energy efficiency monitoring upgrades, solar panels, batteries, new heat pumps and more for all 22 Brisbane pools. Both Yeronga Park Memorial Pool and Dunlop Park Memorial Pool, Corinda will benefit from this sustainability upgrade that will help lower running costs and energy usage. In some good news, $2 pool visits will also be back this summer from Dec to Feb.

Over the next few weeks there are also a huge range of community events on that offer low cost and free activities for all the family. Don’t miss some of the best jams in Brisbane at the St Joey’s Fete, Corinda on Sunday 21 July, brilliant cakes and 7pm fireworks at the Graceville State School Fair on Saturday 3 August and lots of great environmental activities around the district for the Peaks to Points Festival from 20 July to 4 August. I hope to see you there!

Regards, Nicole.

HONOUR AVE SPEED LIMIT CHANGE

Following feedback from the community about pedestrian safety through the Honour Ave, Graceville shopping precinct, in May 2023 I asked Council to undertake a speed limit review and community consultation to help make our local roads safer for everyone.

The speed limit review process involves an investigation and review by a Committee comprised of Queensland Police, Council traffic engineers and State Government Department of Transport and Main Roads officers.

On Friday I was advised by Council that the review had been finalised. Council has now unilaterally decided to implement the lower speed limit recommendation along Honour Ave to 50km between Hanlan St, Chelmer and Marlborough St, Sherwood, and to 40km through the shopping strip.

This far exceeds the request made to Council for “investigation and consultation” through  the shopping strip area around Bank Rd only. Despite my requests since being notified on Friday, Council refuses to undertake any consultation. I’ve been told the changes will be implemented in the first week in August so look out for the new signage.

Slowing the speed limit through the Graceville shops is good news and should make it safer for this very busy pedestrian precinct, particularly the hundreds of school children using the train and underpass everyday, as well as residents generally. Making Honour Ave 50km between Chelmer and Sherwood was not requested and is a very big change. I am disappointed Council is refusing to undertake consultation before making this change permanent. Consultation is vital in getting the best outcome in my view.

VENNER RD RESURFACING ROJECT

For the third year in a row, the Lord Mayor has announced funding to resurface Venner Rd, Annerley.  The Lord Mayor has refused to publish the funding allocation in the Budget and the CEO of Council refuses to release the figures too.

Yes, that’s how secretive and unaccountable this Lord Mayor and Brisbane City Council are. They will not release any figures about Council’ s road resurfacing programme in the Council Budget. A Budget without numbers.

The project is complicated by the relocation of underground stormwater pipes but is urgently needed as the road is in terrible condition and unsafe. Hopefully third time lucky for what should have been done years ago.

No funding was allocated to upgrade the intersection of Venner Rd/Ipswich Rd/ Waterton St with proper turning lanes and arrows. Instead, Cr Krista Adams, Cr Vicki Howard and senior Council officers are off to the Paris Olympics at a cost of $123,000, bringing total spending on Olympic junkets to up over $300,000. Talk about the wrong priorities in a cost of living crisis.

Elsewhere in Annerley, the Lord Mayor and his “team,” who control a massive majority at Council, voted against my Budget motions to fund pedestrian upgrades at Ekibin Rd, Noble St/Annerley Rd and the Venner Rd intersection upgrade.

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

Beth Eden Graceville Redevelopment - DA Lodged

A development application (A006540381) has been lodged by Retire Australia at 85A Bank Rd/19 Bell Tce, Graceville on the former Beth Eden site. The application is Code Assessable under Council’s planning scheme and no black and white notification sign is required under changes made by the Lord Mayor to City Plan 2014 so now is the tie to make a submission.

What is proposed?

  • 101 independent living units;
  • 10 high care nursing home rooms;
  • 3 x 4 and 5 storey buildings plus rooftop terrace;
  • retention of heritage listed Verney House, stables and some out-buildings; and
  • Bell Tce driveway one-way in; Bank Rd driveway dual access.

What are the key issues?

  • the site is zoned for community facilities and a retirement village/nursing home is allowed;
  • the QLD Government has already approved demolition of the vegetation and buildings on the site, via a Heritage Exemption Certificate;
  • 90 trees (73% of all vegetation including mature natives) to be removed;
  • loss of views of heritage listed Verney House;
  • 148 car parks including 28 visitor and 5 staff spaces (inc. tandem spaces) and traffic impacts to quiet streets;
  • building heights and sizes; and
  • hours of operation (24 hrs), with deliveries proposed 7am - 8pm Mon - Sat.

Whilst reuse of the site for retirement living and nursing care is welcome, the proposal is too big and does not integrate well with the character and amenity of the surrounding neighbourhood. I will be objecting as your local Councillor. If you would like an electronic copy of my objection to help draft your own, please contact my office or click here to download a soft copy.

Paint Factory DA 115 Hyde Rd Yeronga - Update

A quick update on the Paint Factory redevelopment at 115 Hyde Rd, Yeronga. The developer has sought to pause the development until 30 August 2024 following a further detailed information request outlining a number of ongoing concerns from Council.

Gym, Graceville Ave, Graceville - Update

Revised plans for the gym and wellness hub at 164 Graceville Ave (the old Good Life centre) have been lodged with Council. There are only minor revisions and the proposal at 3 storeys plus a 4th storey pop up is still way too big. No decision has been made yet, but a big thank you to the hundreds of residents who have spoken up about this development. I hope Council is listening.

PARKS UPDATE

A new half basketball court is on the way this year for Strickland Terrace Park, Sherwood. By co-locating the new court with the existing playground, handball court and picnic facilities, there will be something fun for Sherwood and Graceville residents of all ages at this lovely local park.

Did you know the Sherwood Arboretum turns 100 in March 2025? $590,000 will be invested this year to finalise the new nature play area, a new playground shade sail, supporting the Kauri Pine Avenue and weeding around the lake system. Join one of the fabulous upcoming community and local school tree planting days. Contact my office for more details or check out the Friends of Sherwood Arboretum Facebook page.

The new BBQ and picnic facilities are now open at Cawonga Park, Oxley

Planning is underway for a playground and park facility upgrade for Jacaranda Park, Yeronga.  I have allocated approximately $250,000 from the Tennyson Ward Suburban Enhancement Fund to undertake the project this year. Thank you to all the residents who participated in the consultation process so far. There will be further consultation on the new playground in coming months.

Good news for dog lovers - a shelter and seating are on the way for the small dog park in Hyde Rd Park, Yeronga.

As of 16 June 2024, motorists travelling inbound on Moggill Road will use the new overpass to access Coonan Street and Keating Street. Motorists in the right lane approaching the overpass inbound must turn right. Motorists continuing inbound to the the city should use the left lane.
