MESSAGE FROM NICOLE
Hi Everyone

I want to thank residents for their support at the recent Council election. The final result was a resounding win with 76.25% of the vote!

The Lord Mayor and his team have retained a huge majority of wards, 19/26, but with much reduced margins across most of their wards. I suspect this means that not much will change when it comes to inappropriate over-development but I am still fighting those proposals that are outside the planning scheme.

I have been elected to the Environment Parks and Sustainability and Field Services Committees, both of which are very practical Council committees focused on operational works. (I did ask for Planning and or Public Transport but no was the answer!).  If you notice that things are not being done right (eg long grass or potholes) or not being done within the timeframes you have been given for repairs please do let me know.

For me it is business as usual and I look forward to working with all of our wonderful schools, community groups and organisations over the next four years on a range of projects and initiatives to make our community an even better place to live.

First cab off the rank will be replacement of the South Juniors cricket nets at Fairfield and a playground upgrade at Clifton Hill Peace Park, Annerley when the budget is handed down in late June.

Thank you again for your support.

Regards Nicole.

SPEED SIGN GETS RESULTS

Waterton Street, Annerley Gets Results
Brisbane City Council's portable flashing speed sign on Waterton street, Annerley has produced some clear results.

Waterton Street is posted as 60km/hr. The sign collected data for a 60 day period from December 2015 to February 2016.  During this time 215,037 (ave 3,400 cars per day) passed through the portable speed sign zone. When prompted by the sign 85% of all vehicles were slowing on average by 8kms/hr to 59kms.

14,770 vehicles or 7% of all drivers were recorded travelling above the posted speed limit with 85% of speeding drivers at or below 67km/hr. The sign had a positive effect, prompting 85% of speeding drivers to reduce their speeds by an average 8kms to 59km/hr within the speed camera range.

Brisbane Corso, Fairfield too!
Brisbane City Council's portable flashing speed signs on Brisbane Corso, Fairfield has also produced some clear results.

Brisbane Corso is posted as 50km/hr. The sign collected data for a 50 day period from January to March 2016. During this time 192,395 (ave 3,900 cars per day) passed through the portable speed sign zone. When prompted by the sign 85% of all vehicles were slowing on average by 5kms/hr to 51km within the speed camera range.

72,059 vehicles or 37.5% of all drivers were recorded travelling above the posted speed limit with 85% of speeding drivers at or below 61km/hr. The sign had a positive effect, prompting 85% of speeding drivers to reduce their speeds back by an average 5kms to 56km/hr within the speed camera range, still well above the 50km maximum speed.

The portable flashing sign is being rotated around traffic hot spots in Tennyson Ward. Hopefully these results will highlight the need to slow down around our local streets.

FEDERATION CUP
The Federation Cup is on this weekend from Saturday 16 - Sunday 17 April at the Pat Rafter Arena, Tennyson. This will result in the closure of King Arthur Terrace, from Fairfield Road to Softstone Street to allow for increased foot traffic.

The Queensland Tennis Centre Parking Control Area will also come into effect, which will limit parking in the area to one hour. Residents in this area must display a residential parking permit to park on their street for longer than one hour, which can be obtained at my office. While both Paragon and Ortive Streets will remain open, a parking permit will still need to be displayed by residents. Parking inspectors will be enforcing these restrictions during the event. To find out if your property will be effected by these time restrictions, please click here.

To receive a free temporary parking permit, please visit my office at Fairfield Gardens Shopping Centre before 5pm Friday with a copy of your vehicle registration, driver's licence and proof of residence. Alternatively you can visit the Souths Regional Business Centre at 665 Fairfield Rd, Yeerongpilly to recieve a yearly parking permit on the spot. This will require a fee of $10.

GOLD STAR READING PROGRAM

Children across the city will discover the joys of reading when the Gold Star Reading Club program commences in Council libraries on Tuesday 3 May 2016. The Gold Star Reading Club is designed to encourage and develop reading and literacy skills in children aged 6-12 years.

Gold Star members will receive a Gold Star Reading Club activity book that includes progress charts, reading suggestions, competition entry forms and heaps of fun activities. By reading just three books of their choice and completing a reading activity each month before recording the details in their activity book, children can collect nine gold stars and monthly incentives.

Children who collect all nine gold stars are eligible to:

  • enter the major prize draw at the end of the program to win a $200 book voucher for themselves and another one for their school
