MESSAGE FROM NICOLE
Hi Everyone

The Council election is being held on Saturday, 19 March in just over a week's time. I have included below a list of polling places which are all open from 8am until 5pm.  Please note, that due to the Electoral Commission of Queensland redistribution and changes to the ward boundaries, some booths have changed or are no longer polling places in Tennyson Ward.

Check out the list below to find your closest polling place.

Regards, Nicole

ELECTION

Council elections are taking place on Saturday 19 March, 2016 throughout Queensland. Voting is compulsory. Prepolling has now opened and is available between 9am - 5pm Monday to Friday at 142 Tennyson Memorial Avenue, Yeerongpilly, entrance off Walker Street (near the Brisbane Golf Club).

Please see the below list for election day polling booths:

LOCAL PETITIONS

FAIRFIELD LIBRARY

Fairfield Library is one of the suburb's great community assets - a hub for local news, reading and activities. Sadly, the library is not open on Mondays and only part of the day on Saturdays. I am hoping we can convince Council to open seven days per week as part of the Neighbourhood Plan improvements. Most days there is a queue of people waiting to get into the library!

I am seeking your support to extend the Fairfield Library to seven days per week so we can have more great services and activities at our local library. Please sign the petition here and either email or return it to my office.

THE PAINT FACTORY, 115 HYDE RD YERONGA

The developer has released their vision for 115 Hyde Rd Yeronga, old paint factory site, and the Yeronga industrial precinct. Feedbakc to the developer has now closed, however, you are welcome to sign the petition or send me further feedback that I will ensure is passed on to Council. To date more than 1000 people have signed the petition, which is an extraordinary response.

The draft masterplan includes:

  • 1000 units
  • approximately 20, five storey unit buildings
  • some two and three storey townhouses on Hyde Rd
  • 2,500sqm commercial and retail land
  • 6,500 sqm low impact industry (an existing lot)
  • five new internal roads connecting to Hyde Rd and Cansdale St
  • an estimated 6,240 EXTRA vehicles per day on local road.

In contrast, if the site was to be rezoned for low density residential development it would yield about 160 house lots, even less if some land was dedicated as parkland.

Flooding and traffic issues seem to have received little consideration.

I do not support high rise in Yeronga West and find it staggering that the developer thinks 1000 new units, the size of a whole new suburb, and all the extra traffic it would generate is appropriate. Let's send them a clear message about the need for a dedicated, green walk signal across Hyde Rd.

Please sign my petition to oppose this inappropriate development. You can download the petition here.

LOCAL EVENTS
BANDS IN THE PARK
3 - 5pm, Sunday 13 March
Bring a chair or rug and join the Oxley Neighbourhood Watch and the Brisbane City Council for a free afternoon of music with Bands in the Park. Entertainment will consist of a 12 piece jazz band as well as a Ukulele group, both presenting a range of music from jazz and swing to pop and traditional folk. There will also be free children's activities, including a jumping castle, face painter, and balloon twister. Coffee, food and drinks will also be available throughout the afternoon.
Nixon Park - Oxley Rd, Oxley

PARKS UPDATE
STRICKLAND TCE PARK UPDATE
Work is well underway on the playground upgrade for Strickland Terrace Park, Sherwood. The playground is temporarily out of action while the new fort, climbing wall and handball court are installed. The current swings are being retained, as the budget was very tight. Work should be completed within a week or two.

ORIENT ROAD PARK TREE PLANTING
Tree planting is about to begin in Orient Road Park to replace those lost during the November 2014 super-cell storm. Works are scheduled to start on 8 March and should take four weeks to complete.
