MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi Everyone

Planning is well underway to the playground and park upgrade for Clifton Hill Peace Park in Annerley. Details of the upgrade are noted in the story below and I welcome your feedback. A big thank you to Annerley NHW#5 who have been great with suggestions and facilitating community feedback.

Development issues in Yeronga - at this stage the RSPCA site proposal remains active and no decision has been made by Council. As your local Councillor, I have urged Council to refuse the application and asked the Lord Mayor, Graham Quirk, to bring the decision to full Council, but he has refused to do so. We are left waiting until the Council officers make a decision. Not great but hopefully Council will do the right thing by our community.

There are lots of great local activities on and I hope to see you at one of the events over coming weeks.

Regards Nicole.

YERONGA BOWLS CLUB SOLD FOR DEVELOPMENT
Last month the Yeronga Bowls Club sold their Querrin Street (Macgregor) green to developer, Lennium Group, who has now lodged a development application for a large, four storey unit complex on the site.

The School Rd green and historic clubhouse are to be retained.

The Bowls Club land is zoned for sport and recreation and is a heritage listed site. The application is contrary to the zoning intent which is green space for community sporting purposes. Sadly, this type of application is allowed under the new City Plan 2014, which I have strongly opposed as your local Councillor.

The proposal includes:
  • 4 storeys;
  • 50 units (9 x 1 bedroom / 41 x 2 bedroom);
  • 61 car spaces;
  • 60% site cover;
  • 5% communal open space.
The application is impact assessable and residents will be able to have their say when the large black and white notice board goes up on site. This could be several months away.

I will be available to discuss the Yeronga Bowls Club DA at a public meeting on Saturday 30 July between 12:30pm and 2pm at the Anglican Church Hall, Cork St, Yeronga. Please come along to find out how you can have your say.

On my website I have provided some grounds for objections, which can be found here. If possible, it would be great if you could make a preliminary objection online here or by letter to the Development Manager, Brisbane City Council, GPO Box 1434, Brisbane 4001 (or by dropping it into my office).

You can read more details about the development on Council's PD online website here. Once logged in, follow the prompts and enter either the address - 11 Querrin St, Yeronga - or the application number - A004393354. A hard copy of the plan is available for viewing in my office.
CLIFTON HILL PEACE PARK PLAYGROUND

This year $120,000 has been allocated to upgrade the park and play equipment at Clifton Hill Peace Park, Annerley. The upgrade includes, by popular demand:

  • a double shade sail to cover the entire playground area;
  • a new BBQ near the shelter shed;
  • sensory play equipment;
  • swings; and
  • a climbing fort aimed at children aged between 2 and 8 years.

The playground options include a smaller fort and more stand alone equipment or a larger fort and less stand alone equipment. Depending on budget, elements of the equipment in both options are interchangeable. To view both options in more detail, please visit my website here.

Council is currently costing resurfacing of the footpath within the park and I know this is a priority from a safety point of view. I am hoping we can find a way to include the upgraded footpath this year. At this stage there are not enough funds in the current year for additional seating but we can make this and the adult exercise equipment part of a stage two upgrade in future years.

To have a say about the playground equipment, please come along to:

  • Annerley Neighbourhood Watch Five at 7 - 8pm Monday, 8 August, St Aidan's Church
  • chat with Nicole at her community corner at 10am Saturday, 13 August at Clifton Hill Peace Park.

If you can't make it in person please email your feedback through to my office at tennyson.ward@bcc.qld.gov.au.

I look forward to hearing from you.

YERONGA DISTRICT RESIDENT'S ASSOCIATION COMMUNITY FORUM

Last Tuesday the Yeronga District Residents Association held a community forum to enable residents to discuss their ideas for the Hyde Rd, Yeronga precinct and beyond. This discussion is precipitated by the Plan by Hyde Rd Development PTY LTD to develop the old Taubman's Paint Factory at 115 Hyde Rd, Yeronga.

The Forum was well attended by around 80-90 people with standing room only at the RSL.

Richard Kirk, President of the Queensland Chapter, Australian Institute of Architects, gave a speech about creative and visionary communities that got everyone thinking. Attendees were then split into smaller groups for discussion, with a summary of the top four issues from each group provided to wrap up the night.

Some very strong themes emerged around sustainable living, connectivity, technology, green space and community facilities, with a wide diversity of views about what type of development should occur in future.

The YDRA is now compiling a report from the meeting, which they will circulate to the community via their Facebook page and discuss with Council's town planners as needed.

A big thank you to the YDRA team for creating an interactive opportunity for our community to speak up and have their say.

Sherwood Arboretum Bird Walk
One of Australia's leading ecologists, Professor Hugh Possingham of The University of Queensland, will introduce you to the Arboretum's stunning birdlife at 7.00am on Sunday 17 July, starting at the Jolimont Street entry.

The Arboretum offers an ideal home for birdlife thanks to its well-protected wetlands, a collection of more than 1000 Australian native trees and the important 'wildlife corridor' of the Brisbane River at the front door.

Sunday's walk will finish with a relaxing morning tea by the river. The cost of just $5.00 for adults for morning tea helps support the voluntary work of the Friends of Sherwood Arboretum Association.
Please remember to RSVP by Wednesday 13 July by calling 3278 6525 or by emailing info@sherwoodarboretum.com.au

RSPCA CUPCAKE DAY 2016

Come along to Hyde Road Dog Park, Yeronga on August 14 from 9am - 2pm for endless cupcakes, as well as a dog wash, sausage sizzle, raffles, coffee and more!

Every year, the hardy volunteers from the Fehlberg Puppy Park organise a fantatsic event that raises thousands of dollars for the RSPCA. Come along and help them raise vital funding for the RSPCA's operations.

Cupcake Day for the RSPCA is all about baking, eating and, most importantly, fundraising for animals in need. When you put on your apron and whip out that mixing bowl, you are helping to ensure animals across Australia are treated with dignity and love. Who would've known the humble cupcake could transform lives?

Bakers needed! This year, the Hyde Road Dog Park Group have a goal of 3,500 cupcakes! If you'd like to help out, please email cupcake@kahootzclothing.com

ROAD AND CONSTRUCTION WORKS
STREET RESURFACING
Stamford Street, Yeerongpilly
Between Biarra and Wilkie Street
From 21 July

TENNYSON TO SHERWOOD UNDERGOUND WORKS
From early June, Energex began installing underground cable between the Tennyson and Sherwood substations as part of works to upgrade the network. This will require some road work and possible delays along King Arthur Terrace, Camelot Street, Vivian Street, Plumer Street and Lockwood Street.
Residents can expect traffic control around work areas, large machinery operation, intermittent higher noise levels and minor trenching works around joint bays.

The majority of works will be conducted between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. However, occasional weekend work will be required.

While some disruptions are expected, your cooperation and understanding during these necessary works are appreciated.

The works are due to be completed in late 2016. For more information, visit the Energex website here
