MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi Everyone

I want to thank residents for their support at the recent Council election. The final result was a resounding win with 76.25% of the vote!

The Lord Mayor and his team have retained a huge majority of wards, 19/26, but with much reduced margins across most of their wards. I suspect this means that not much will change when it comes to inappropriate over-development but I am still fighting those proposals that are outside the planning scheme.

I have been elected to the Environment, Parks and Sustainability and Field Services Committees, both of which are very practical Council committees focused on operational works. (I did ask for Planning and/or Public Transport but no was the answer!).  If you notice that things are not being done right (eg long grass or potholes) or not being done within the timeframes you have been given for repairs please do please let me know.

For me it is business as usual and I look forward to working with all of our wonderful schools, community groups and organisations over the next four years on a range of projects and initiatives to make our community an even better place to live.

First cab off the rank will be addressed the unsatisfactory parking situation at the Bank Rd, Graceville shops. I have had a huge number of complaints about the width and angle of the new carparks. Council has refused to make any changes to date, so I have drafted an online petition you can sign here  or pop into a local business and sign a hard copy.

The new handball court at Strickland Tce Park is due to be completed this month. It's great to see families enjoying the new equipment.

Thank you again for your support.

Regards, Nicole.

GRACEVILLE SCIP PARKING CAMPAIGN

Brisbane City Council's $3.75 million Graceville SCIP is well underway. Currently, Council are undertaking major structural works, which are noisy and invasive.  You can read more about the current work schedule here

Parking Problems

Over the past few weeks many residents have spoken with me about safety and access concerns with the new car parking arrangements at the Graceville SCIP. In particular, the width and angles of the indented spaces in Bank Road and Honour Avenue. Council made these changes without consulting me or the business owners and traders about the parking specifications.

For the past few weeks, I have been working with Council to make the changes based on the feedback I have received to date. Council has refused to do so, saying the traders support the current arrangements. You can read their response here. This is certainly not the feedback I have had from them. Like me, they are concerned about access and manoeuvrability and want to ensure it is safe and convenient for shoppers.

As your spokesperson to Council, I have drafted a petition that you can download here calling on Council to widen the spaces and to change the hours to allow night time parking. We need to speak up as a community to let Council know that the current arrangements are not working and need to be changed.

Everyone wants the SCIP to succeed, but it will be pointless if people cannot conveniently and safely access our popular local shops.

To discuss this further, I will be holding a public meeting outside Graceville Superior Fruit on Bank Road on Wednesday, 11 May between 6pm - 7pm. Peter will remain open during this time.

If you could sign the petition and ask your friends and neighbours to sign the petition, and return it to me by email here (a scan or photo is sufficient), or post your form to Tennyson Ward Office PO Box 6438 Fairfield QLD 4103 by Friday, 13 May 2016. Copies will be available at shops within the precinct as well.

With your help, and a strong combined voice, I know we can convince Council to make these improvements.

SHERWOOD ALDI UPDATE
Council has issued some preliminary advice to ALDI about their proposed supermarket and convenience stores next to the Sherwood Bus Depot at 25 Lahey Close. Council has advised that it does not support the development for the following reasons:
  • traffic safety, sight lines and congestion in the turning lane over the rail bridge
  • contrary to the low impact industrial zoning
  • DTMR requires 20ms of land is required for future rail widening
  • landscaping and connectivity with Sherwood Rd
  • noise from 24/7 operations
  • stormwater concerns
  • adverse impacts on the heritage listed Lahey Sawmill.
The developer now has six months to respond to the issues raised by Council. Public notification is required, so residents will get a chance to make a direct submission. Watch out for the large black and white notice sign on Sherwood Rd. I know many people are keen to see an ALDI in the district but there are some real traffic and access concerns with the proposed site. You can read more about the DA here.
LOCAL EVENTS
SHERWOOD STATE SCHOOL MOTHER'S DAY FETE

I look forward to seeing you at Sherwood State School's 2016 Mother's Day Fete on Sunday 7 May from 9am - 5pm for food, rides and fun. Bring your family and friends for a great day filled with stalls, performances and activities.

For more information on how you can contribute or donate items, please contact Sherwood State School on 3716 2111 or visit their facebook site here.

FEDERATION CUP
The Federation Cup is on this weekend from Saturday 15 - Sunday 17 April at the Pat Rafter Arena, Tennyson. This will result in the closure of King Arthur Terrace, from Fairfield Road to Softstone Street to allow for increased foot traffic.

The Queensland Tennis Centre Parking Control Area will also come into effect, which will limit parking in the area to one hour. Residents in this area must display a residential parking permit to park on their street for longer than one hour, which can be obtained at my office. While both Paragon and Ortive Streets will remain open, a parking permit will still need to be displayed by residents. Parking inspectors will be enforcing these restrictions during the event. To find out if your property will be effected by these time restrictions, please click here.

To receive a free temporary parking permit, please visit my office at Fairfield Gardens Shopping Centre before Friday at 5pm with a copy of your vehicle registration, driver's licence and proof of residency. Alternatively you can visit the Souths Regional Business Centre at 665 Fairfield Rd, Yeerongpilly to recieve a parking permit on the spot. This will require a fee of $10.

GRACEVILLE STATION UPGRADE UPDATE

The Queensland State Government's Graceville Station universal access upgrade is now underway. As a result there has been some construction impacts. While the station will remain open for regular services, some platform and station access changes have occured during a mix of both day and night time works. Commuters will be given notification of construction activities likely to cause impacts.

Night works will occur between Sunday 17 April to Thursday 21 April 2016 and from Sunday 24 April to Thursday 28 April, between the hours of 11pm and 5am to upgrade overhead machinery. This will result in a partial lane closure in Appel Street between Randolph and Evadne Streets to allow for machinery and vehicle parking. Residents adjacent to Graceville station may experience some noise from truck movements and light pollution from mobile lighting towers.

While there have been some impacts caused by the works, measures have been taken to ensure disruptions are kept to a minimum. Your patience and cooperation is appreciated during this time.

GOLD STAR READING PROGRAM

Children across the city will discover the joys of reading when the Gold Star Reading Club program commences in Council libraries on Tuesday 3 May 2016. The Gold Star Reading Club is designed to encourage and develop reading and literacy skills in children aged 6-12 years.

Gold Star members will receive a Gold Star Reading Club activity book that includes progress charts, reading suggestions, competition entry forms and heaps of fun activities. By reading just three books of their choice and completing a reading activity each month before recording the details in their activity book, children can collect nine gold stars and monthly incentives.

Children who collect all nine gold stars are eligible to:

  • enter the major prize draw at the end of the program to win a $200 book voucher for themselves and another one for their school
  • attend their local Gold Star Reading Club awards ceremony with their families
  • receive a medallion and a certificate of achievement

Join your local library at Corinda, Fairfield or Annerley to participate.
