 Hi
Everyone
Storm and flood related clean-up is now underway around Brisbane. Council is currently
picking up kerb-side green waste and expects to have the job completed in about two weeks. Free
tipping has now finished but if you need waste vouchers, please contact my office.
Four parks in
the ward are closed due to significant tree failures - Sherwood Arboretum, Jacaranda Park and Hyde Road
Park, Yeronga and Princess Street Park, Fairfield. I encourage you to observe the signs and stay out of
these areas while they are made safe.
A range of Council grants opened this week for community,
environmental and sporting clubs. Grants range up to $50,000 and the details about how to apply are noted
in the story below. Please let me know if I can be of any assistance with your application.
Congratulations to Yeronga State High 2012 seniors for their outstanding results. 100% of students
seeking an OP were placed within the 1-15 band. This is an amazing result, well done students, teachers
and families.
Regards, Nicole.
Ps The annual Council Kerb-side collections of
household goods are now underway across Annerley. Other suburbs follow next week. Please see
details for your suburb below.
Recreational
facilities at Yeronga Pool will receive a much needed upgrade next financial year, with Brisbane City
Council announcing a $2 million upgrade project.
Councillor Johnston welcomed the investment
in Yeronga Pool’s swimming facilities.
“For four years I have been lobbying for
a pool upgrade at Yeronga. It is a hugely popular facility and I am delighted that the Lord Mayor has
finally recognised the importance of this pool for residents on the Southside,” Councillor Johnston
said.
“Shelly Douyere and her team run a fantastic facility for recreational use and
learn to swim classes. I want to thank and congratulate her for making a long-term commitment to the pool
and our community.”
The upgrade includes a new 15 lane 25m pool, gym and other recreational
improvements.
Yeronga pool is one of the busiest in Brisbane with 12% of all pool users (1.8m
people) visiting the facility each year.
This week
an annual large household goods collection has started across Tennyson Ward. If your household waste is
not flood related please dispose of it via these suburb collections.
-
Annerley -

-
Rocklea, Fairfield, Tennyson, Yeerongpilly
and Yeronga - 11 February 2013
-

Please place your household items on the kerb by
Sunday night for your week of collection.
Congratulations
to all the wonderful community and service groups in Tennyson Ward who were recognised with Australia
Day service awards. The volunteers who were recognised have worked for many years in our community without
fanfare or recognition.
I was delighted to attend the ceremony this year hosted by the Moorooka
Lions Club, the Federal Member for Moreton and all elected representatives in our district at the local,
state and federal level.
Congratulations to:
-
Jennifer Wrigley, Junction Park State School
-
Harry Horstmann and George
Anderson, Stephen’s RSL
-
Roy Machen, Graceville Croquet Club
-
Andrew
Spalding, WTSAG
This year Ms Adele Rice, the Principal (retired) of Milperra State
High School at Chelmer was honoured with the Sir Jim Killen Service Award for her inspiring services to
educating migrant and refugee children. This was most deserved and Adele will be greatly missed in our
community.
ANNERLEY GARDEN
BED UPGRADES
Ipswich Road, Annerley
will undergo a green facelift over the next few years. The project kicks off this month with new garden
beds including White Oak trees and a grassy understory at various locations between Cornwall Street and
Torrens Street, Annerley.
The footpath garden beds range in size from 4m to 18m depending on
available space and have been designed to be self-maintaining. The project aims to create a sub-tropical
boulevard to beautify Ipswich Road as well as introduce sustainability measures to improve stormwater
drainage quality.
In tandem with Council, Energex will be undertaking bundling of low voltage
power lines along some parts of Ipswich Road to prevent tree contact.
Council is currently inviting community, environmental, cultural and sporting groups to apply
for funding.
The following grants may be of interest to local groups and schools:
-
Access and Inclusion Community Partnership - closes 18 March 2013
-
Lord Mayor's Fellowships for Young and Emerging Artists - closes 18 March 2013
-
Community History Grants programme - closes 18 March 2013
-
Health and Physical Activity Grant - closes 18 March 2013
-
Community Development
and Capacity Building Grant - closes 18 March 2013
-
Housing Support programme
- closes 11 March 2013
-
Lord Mayor's Helen Taylor Award for Local
History - closes 18 March 2013
Funding for grants ranges from $2,000
to $50,000. Applications must be lodged online. Click here
to find out more information about the available grants.
"I would of course be most happy
to provide letters of support for any group or school applying for a grant, so please contact my office,"
Cr Johnston said.

In
2012 an estimated 591,400 volunteers cleaned up 16,169 tonnes at 7,363 sites right across Australia.
But we can do better! So be a good sport and join the team to Clean Up Australia on Sunday, 3
March 2013. To get involved click here.

Business Clean Up Day: Tuesday 26 February
"Everyone is welcome and it's a great opportunity to help clean up local rubbish hotspots
in our community," Cr Johnston said.
Don't
miss your bin day again!
What Bin Day is an App for your iPhone and Android devices
that helps you remember what bin is being collected from your home this week and when. The App uses a
custom built service that just needs your address to determine a bin collection schedule. Adding your
home to the App can be done in three easy steps:
-
download the app to your iOS or Android
phone from the store
-
add your address by typing it in or let your phone detect your current
location
-
see your bin collections and receive reminders the day before!
A big thank you to all those residents who assisted friends,
family and neighbours to clean up their homes and local streets after the storm/flood event. I have attached
an action shot of the Hughes Family of Yeronga who went out on their own initiative to cut up
and remove trees from our local roads. A big thank you for all of your hard work!

If you are still requiring volunteer assistance to help with cleanup at your home please
call 1300 427 472 to register.
I have noted below a comparison between flood
levels in January 2011 and the recent Australia Day weekend flood for your information.
