Hi
Everyone
There are two hot transport issues that residents are consistently raising with me
at the moment.
Firstly, the State Government’s bus review. As you know I have strongly
objected to the review which will cut or slash services around Tennyson Ward. Today, the State Government
has announced massive changes to local bus services. Further details are noted below.
Worse
still, the Costello Audit Report is recommending the privatisation of public transport services.
It was a disaster for Brisbane in the first a half of the 20th century, and Council took over privately
run buses in 1940. I am calling on the Newman Government to immediately rule out such a backwards step
and confirm they will continue to provide public transport (rail, bus and ferry) services to our
City.
Secondly, cyclists. They are driving residents mad in the morning with the level of noise
the larger pelotons make as they ride through the Ward. The Lord Mayor has $120m for bikeway improvements
available this year and I am calling on him to honour his election promise to our area and install ‘
Keep Quiet’ signs. So far he is refusing. You can sign the e-petition here.
Please pass it onto your friends and neighbours and ask them to register. The e-petition closes on
Friday, 19 April.
Regards, Nicole.

CHELMER 'NO RIGHT TURN' UPDATE
Last year you may recall that I surveyed Chelmer residents about the usefulness of the existing
‘no right turn’ sign at Queenscroft and Luxford Streets. The restriction was put in
place many years ago to prevent rat-running and queue jumping on Oxley Road.
76 residents living
in nearby streets responded to the survey. Of those 51% said they did not support the sign, 36% did support
the sign and 8% would support an alternate location.
I have requested the following to deal
with these issues:
-
a three month trial removal of the 4-6pm ‘no right turn’
sign only (keeping the 7-9am sign pending the outcome of any trial);
-
investigation of
additional ‘no right turn’ signage in Chelmer and Graceville;
-
new parking restrictions
outside Adrift café (with their support);
-
a ‘no u-turn’ sign;
-
investigation of the suitability of Queenscroft Street and Oxley Road for traffic lights
to improve safe access to Oxley Road;
-
written to the Lord Mayor about ‘keep
quiet’ signage promised during the election; and
-
requested additional police enforcement
by Sherwood police.
The ‘no right turn’ sign also remains in place at the
corner of Graceville Avenue and Nadine Street Graceville to deter through traffic from entering local
streets.
I acknowledge that there is strong support for the removal of the ‘no right
turn’ sign. At this stage many of the residents directly affected by the removal of the 'no right
hand turn' sign are concerned that the problem experienced some years ago will simply return. I certainly
do not want to see the old problems return and hope that a trial afternoon removal may give us a clearer
picture of any adverse impacts.
I will write again to residents later in the year to update
you about Council's response.
TRANSLINK BUS REVIEW UPDATE
The Newman State Government’s review of south-east
Queensland bus services is now a harsh reality for residents of the inner southern and south western suburbs.
Councillor for Tennyson Ward, Nicole Johnston, said the Newman Government’s decision to
cut the 104, 107 and 108 routes servicing the suburbs of Sherwood, Graceville, Tennyson, Yeerongpilly,
Yeronga and Fairfield was short-sighted and stupid.
"Despite living up to 2kms from their nearest
rail station, many residents, including those at a local retirement village, will be left with no bus
service at all,” Councillor Johnston said.
“Elderly residents can’t access local
rail stations because of steep stairs, long walking distances and inadequate car parking. Often
their only means of transport, to shops and doctors, is by bus.”
“I’m shocked
at the sense of disruption and pain these changes will cause particularly to elderly residents and school
students who no longer have a local bus service. No universal access and now no bus.”
Two years
ago the Bligh Government cut Tennyson rail line services and now the Newman State Government has dumped
the 104 replacement bus services.
“It is the elderly travelling to hospitals and shops,
and school students heading to St Laurence’s, Corinda State High, St Aiden’s, Brisbane State
High and Somerville House who will be hardest hit by this senseless decision,” Councillor Johnston
said.
Councillor Johnston said extending the 196 Buz route to Yeronga West was great but all
bus services in Yeerongpilly and Yeronga East including to Yeronga State School, Yeronga High School and
the Endeavour Foundation had been cut.
“I am calling on the Lord Mayor to oppose these reckless
changes. He said he did not support any cuts to Brisbane City Council bus routes. Now is the
time to see if he has any backbone or whether he will roll over and play dead for Campbell Newman.”
Details of Translink's Bus review can be found here.

Alan Fletcher Research Station
Unison Projects Pty Ltd is currently
in the due diligence phase of negotiations to acquire the Alan Fletcher Research Station. The sale details
have not yet been finalised. A development application has not yet been lodged on the site. I am
keeping a close eye on this site and will advise residents as soon as a development plan has
been lodged with Council.
39 Ferry St Sherwood (old defence housing)
A number of residents have contacted me about the proposed redevelopment of 39 Ferry St, the old defence
townhouses. The development proposal for does not comply with the City Plan and if approved would
set an adverse precedent for our area. I urge you to object. I have drafted
a standard objection you are welcome to use, and/or amend. The more personal the objection, that
is, the more your objection discusses the impacts on your property or street, the better.
Click
here for the objection.
LORD MAYOR'S BUSINESS FORUMS
All residents are invited to attend the Lord Mayor's

upcoming forums at Sunnybank on 9 April and Mt Gravatt on 24 June. Forums start at 7pm. Exact
