About Rotacaster

Australian Rotacaster Wheel Limited designs, manufactures and distributes innovative patented multi-directional wheels, which are fast becoming the alternative to the traditional swivel caster.

The Rotacaster is a sturdy, precision engineered omni-style wheel, adaptable to a vast array of applications including traditional industrial, commercial, conveyor and robotic uses. The multi-directional Rotacaster wheel overcomes most of the limitations of the traditional swivel caster wheel, offering improved functionality, safety, stability and manoeuvrability.

Rotacaster also manufactures and assembles a range of materials handling solutions based around the multi-directional Rotacaster wheel technology.

These include our growing range of Rotatrucks, Stairclimbers, skates, cradles, crawlers, trollies, dollies, conveyors, mobile pallets and many more products.

If you need an innovative multi-directional solution, please look us up at www.rotacaster.com.au or email us directly at info@rotacaster.com.au.

The ultimate in manoeuvrability

After last issue's focus on the Rotatruck, we will focus on what makes powers all of our materials handling solutions: the aptly named ROTACASTER.

The ROTACASTER was developed to improve on the swivel caster wheel and it does so in a number of ways. The key improvements are:

  1. The ability to move loads in any direction while in a stable fixed mount. This delivers significantly improved load stability by eliminating caster induced shift in the centre of gravity when changing directions. This is particularly critical for tall and or stacked loads.
  2. A precise response to steering input by eliminating caster lag during directional change.
  3. Directional stability on inclined surfaces. The stable fixed mount eliminates the ‘runaway shopping cart’ syndrome, significantly reducing the force required to move perpendicular to the incline.

Bottom line, the ROTACASTER offers a significantly improved floor wheel performance compared to the traditional swivel caster.

Watch this video to see the Rotacaster in action.

Floor wheel applications

The multi-directional omni-style ROTACASTER wheel is the best in class thanks to its robust fully moulded engineered polymer construction.

The 125mm ROTACASTER wheel is able to move large loads in a linear or perpendicular direction and for that matter, along any alternate horizontal vector. Wheels can be arranged to support the weight and shape of the load. A selection of standard mounts is available and suitable to most needs.

While load bearing capacity allows movements of significant load weight (upwards of 2 tonnes), rolling resistance limits the comfortable manual handling by a single person to loads of around 500kg per square meter.

Just to show you what can be done, here's a video demonstrating one man moving one tonne of cargo on a pallet supported by ROTACASTERs.

Thanks to its all polymer design, the ROTACASTER is highly corrosion resistant and operates at 100% capacity in temperatures of up to 95C on durometer (hardness) ratings of over 90.

Conveyor applications

While the ROTACASTER is the leading multi-directional floor wheel, it excels in inverted applications such as conveyors, cradles, guides and similar applications. The multi-directional materials handling ability of the wheel allows the creation of very simple and cost effective yet highly capable conveyor type systems.

ROTACASTERs make life easier. For instance pipe or cylindrical materials handling cradles enable the simultaneous rotation as well as longitudinal movement. Heavy loads are best supported with the 125mm ROTACASTER, while the 48mm wheel is suited to smaller weights.

In this video you can see a substantial 600+Kg section of pipe being easily manoeuvred by one person.

ROTACASTERs save money. In a recent installation of a conveyor table a client saved over 40% on the investment by using the 48mm Rotacasters in a transfer table instead of purchasing an air table. Not only was the acquisition cost significantly lower, but in terms of operating costs and maintenance needs the Rotacaster will be a much better proposition long into the future.

Watch this very simple demo.

ROTACASTERs are ideal for NGO's, military, medical and other relief support logistics. A major upside is the ability of ROTACASTERS to deliver a high level of functionality without the need of power, which makes it an ideal solution in remote areas or during fast deployment where traditional infrastructure has not yet been implemented.

Robotics

Speaking of having fun, when was the last time you played with Lego? OK, I already know some of you do this regularly. For anyone who does not, know that the 48mm ROTACASTER is great in robotic applications. And not just commercial/industrial ones.

A ROTACASTER equipped Lego Mindstorms creation recently won the Dutch Junior Robocup championship and will be competing at the upcoming World Championships. Now we can proudly say that ROTACASTERS are both award winners and national champions.

Here's an example of someone showing off their LegoMindstorm robot.
