MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi everyone

We have a new Lord Mayor. Last week, Cr Adrian Schrinner, was sworn in at a special Council meeting after Graham Quirk retired. I am pleased to say that I have spoken to Adrian and he has indicated that he wants to work constructively with me. This would be a welcome change from the Newman/Quirk era where Tennyson Ward was consistently ignored (apart from massive development approvals) and their personal treatment of me was appalling.  I welcome Adrian's offer and I hope that this spirit of renewal is reflected in the June 2019 Budget, as our district has been starved of funds for important drainage, road, and park projects for far too long. I will keep you updated. One of my first tasks is to get a better southside connection to the new Indooroopilly Bikeway, one that doesn't include stairs as part of the detailed design for the project, as well as to ensure the bushland and sporting fields at the Oxley Secondary College are handed over to Council.

Fete Season is almost upon us with Sherwood State School first up on Saturday, 11 May. This is always such a wonderful day with lots of jams, cakes, fabulous food, rides and entertainment. In the lead up to the Fete, look out for students selling tickets to the raffle outside Woolies or at the Rocklea Markets. First Prize is a brand new car!

Regards, Nicole.

P.S. if you need a postal vote for the upcoming Federal election on 18 May you can collect one from my office at Fairfield Gardens. Support our local schools and churches and buy a democracy sausage on the day!

DUNLOP PARK PLAYGROUND, CORINDA UPDATE

Work is scheduled to begin on the new playground at Dunlop Park, Corinda in early May, weather permitting.

The Budget is $130,000, which sounds like a lot, but unfortunately isn't and it is likely that the project will be delivered over two years.

Stage one will include:

  • a new playground, including interactive fort ($110,000), which includes:
  • climbing and agility equipment for both toddlers and older kids;
  • swing set, including toddler and basket swings;
  • Jeep rocker;
  • spinner/carousel;
  • shade sail (approx. $25,000);
  • new tap and dog bowl;
  • new bins; and
  • top soil to level the entrance to Oxley Rd.

Stage two will include (when funding permits):

  • learner bike circuit; and
  • footpath to the playground from Oxley Rd.

Thank you again to everyone who gave feedback on the playground. You can visit my website here to view the design in more detail.

MAURICE LITTLE WAY, GRACEVILLE

For ANZAC Day this year, we recognise the founder of the Sherwood RSL, Lt Maurice Little, who served as the first President of the Sherwood RSL from 1919 to 1925 and was a lifelong champion of veterans.

Lt Little, a Gallipoli hero, was badly injured at Quinn's Point, but came home to Corinda to champion the needs of World War One veterans. As suggested by the Sherwood-Indooroopilly RSL, the pathway between Churchill St and the cenotaph will be officially dedicated as Maurice Little Way on ANZAC Day this year.

I hope you will all join me at the ANZAC Day service and unveiling at Graceville Memorial Park on 25 April - march fall in at 7am and service commences 7.30am. See below for a list of all local ANZAC Day services.

LOCAL NEWS AND EVENTS

Friends of Oxley Creek Common AGM

Friends of Oxley Creek Common is at a critical stage as members age, move away, or leave to focus on other things.

Both the President and Treasurer will step down at the upcoming AGM and they need people to come forward and be a little more involved in Oxley Creek Common, and particularly its future.
It's only a few hours a year to organise seasonal bird walks and look after the group's bank account, but there's scope to do lots more if you wish.

If you have a little time for this wonderful natural asset, attend the group's Annual General Meeting at 10am on Sunday, April 28. (The AGM will immediately follow the bird walk that departs the Red Shed at 7am.)

President, Treasurer, Secretary and Management Committee positions will be elected.
To nominate for any of these positions, or for more information, please contact Steve on 0421 984 588.

GET YOUR PARKING PERMITS - FEDERATION CUP 20-21 APRIL 2019

The Federation Cup is being held over the Easter weekend from 20-21 April, 2019. All residential streets within 1km of the stadium will be subject to 1hr parking restrictions, residents and their visitors excepted.

This affects residents in Tennyson, Yeerongpilly and Yeronga who live within the Qld Tennis Centre Parking Area. Each street within the Parking Area is delineated via the newly installed yellow signs under each street sign and the existing signs on major roads. You can also see a map of the precinct here.

If you reside within a designated street, you can apply for a permit from my office at Fairfield Gardens Shopping Centre, 180 Fairfield Rd, Fairfield. When applying, please bring a copy of the current vehicle registration certificate for each vehicle registered to the property and a rates notice or utility bill.

Paragon and Ortive Sts, WILL NOT be closed during this event and residents WILL NOT need a pass to access these streets.

SAM SIGN GETS RESULTS - QUARRY RD AND DEWAR TCE

Brisbane City Council's portable flashing speed signs on Dewar Tce and Quarry Rd, Sherwood have produced some clear results.

Dewar Tce, Sherwood is posted as 40km/h. The sign collected data for a ten week period from 16 January to 30 March, 2019. During this time, 96,963 vehicles (av. 1,328 per day) passed through the portable speed sign zone. 45,940 vehicles or 47.4% of all drivers were recorded travelling above the posted speed limit. Of the vehicles speeding, 85% were travelling at or below 51km/hr. When prompted, speeding drivers reduced their speeds by an average of 6kms to 45km/hr within the speed camera range.

Quarry Rd, Sherwood is posted as 50km/h. The sign also collected data for a ten week period from 16 January to 30 March, 2019. During this time, 140,577 vehicles (av. 1,926 per day) passed through the portable speed sign zone. 8,090 vehicles or 5.8% of all drivers were recorded travelling above the posted speed limit. Of the vehicles speeding, 85% were travelling at or below 57km/hr. When prompted, speeding drivers reduced their speeds by an average of 4kms to 53km/hr within the speed camera range.

While these results show that vehicles are slowing down when prompted, there is still an issue with speeding around our local streets. Please be slow down and drive carefully!
STREETS OF REMEMBRANCE

In honour of ANZAC Day 2019, Brisbane City Council is partnering with the Australian Defence Force to recognise Brisbane streets that share their name with people, places and events of historical significance to Australian conflicts.

This year, the types of street names considered are those associated with Australian Soldiers of New Guinea, as well as WWI and WWII Victoria Cross recipients. A full list of all previously commemorated streets can be found on Council's website here or by searching for 'Streets of Remembrance'.

To date, the 'Rising Sun' badge and the 'Royal Australian Navy' badge have been included on 677 street signs, recognising 133 street names in 202 locations around the City.

If you have a suggestion of a street name that would commemorate Australia's men and women in conflict in this special way, please let me know by either emailing my office at tennyson.ward@bcc.qld.gov.au or by phone at 3403 8605. I look forward to hearing from you.

SPORTS FIELD LIGHT POLE TESTING

During April, Council will undertake inspections of light poles on Council-owned sports fields to assess the structural integrity of the light poles. The program consists of a visual inspection using a drone and provides information on the condition of sports fields lighting poles to assist Council to improve sports field safety. If any issues are identified, Council will undertake further investigations at no cost to the lessee.

The following clubs'/sites' lighting will be inspected within the Tennyson Ward:

  • Oxley United Soccer & Sporting Club Inc.
  • Benarrawa Community Development Association Inc.
  • Western Districts Netball Association Inc.
  • South Brisbane District Cricket Club Inc.
  • Souths Graceville Rugby League Club Inc.
  • Western Suburbs District Cricket Club Inc.
  • Brisbane Rugby League Referees Association Inc.
  • The Australian Hellenic Sports & Cultural Association

The inspections will identify a number of potential issues such as timber rot, termite damage, rust and any visual electrical defects. Poles will be rated accordingly from 1 (new) to 5 (needs replacing).

Fields can still be accessed and used during inspections.

These roads include Brisbane Corso, King Arthur Tce, Graceville Ave, Nadine St, Leybourne St, Appel St, Long St W, Hazelmere Pde, Berry St, Dewar Tce, Grace St, Keble St, Morcom Ave, Ardoyne Rd and Seventeen Mile Rocks Rd. NATIONAL COUNCIL OF WOMEN BURSARIES NOW AVAILABLE
BRISBANE OFF-ROAD CYCLING PLAN SURVEY

Brisbane City Council has commenced development of the Brisbane Off-Road Cycling Plan, which aims to provide safe and sustainable recreation opportunities, while better protecting bushland reserves. This includes a range of mountain bike riding, skills tracks, dirt jumps, pump tracks, gravel riding, cyclocross and riding on tracks.

The aim of the Plan is:

  • getting more people outdoors into nature, having fun and getting fit and healthy
  • identifying locations across the city for off-road cycling facilities that better protect the natural habitat
  • providing an accessible network of safe off-road cycling facilities in parks and bushland reserves
  • meeting the growing needs of the off-road cycling community with a well-planned and connected outdoor recreation network.

To help inform the development of the draft concept plans, Council is seeking feedback and ideas from the broader community via an online survey about how people currently use Council's reserves and parks along with their ideas for planning future off-road cycling facilities. The community can complete the online survey on Council's website here, which will be open for feedback until 10 April 2019.

For more information, visit the project webpage here or contact the team via email at parks@brisbane.qld.gov.au.

ROAD AND CONSTRUCTION WORKS

NEW FOOTPATH CENTRAL AVE, SHERWOOD

Work is scheduled to begin on Tuesday 23 April to install a footpath on the even numbered side of Central Ave, Sherwood, between McDougall St and Strickland Tce Park. Some limited access to footpaths and driveway may be experienced, as well as some dust and noise impacts.

BUS STOP ACCESSIBILITY UPGRADE

Council is undertaking works to improve the accessibility of bus stops across the City. As part of the Bus Stop Accessibility Improvement Program, 6,600 Brisbane bus stops will undergo upgrades and maintenance works to boarding points, access paths, waiting areas, signs, tactile ground surface indicators and bus stop seats to ensure compliance with disability and accessibility regulations.

The following bus stop will be upgraded in the coming months:

  • #1624: Long St at Haldane St, stop 52, Graceville

There may be some minor local impacts during work hours of between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday, however some out of hours works may be required. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption to the local community.

TRAFFIC SIGNAL WORKS, OXLEY AND SHERWOOD RDS, SHERWOOD

During April, Council will undertake repairs to the traffic signals at the intersection of Oxley and Sherwood Rds, Sherwood. Works include upgrades to the existing traffic signals poles and mast-arms, upgrade of the signals hardware and replacement of signal cables and pits. Most works will be carried out during the school holiday period to minimise traffic impacts with electrical and pole changeover works to occur in late April after civil works are complete.
