Research and Reports
Victorian government releases exposure draft bill to fine parents when children do not attend school

The Bill will introduce a system where parents may be fined when their children do not attend school. The accompanying materials say this will be used 'as a last resort'.

Schools will still be required to follow existing processes for the recording, monitoring and follow-up of attendance, including meetings with parents and working with families to address attendance issues. These include a range of supports that schools can use to promote attendance, including early intervention to address what might be driving non-attendance. Submissions are due by 25 March 2013.

For further information: Visit education.vic.gov.au/attendance for more information, including how to make a submission.
