MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi everyone

If you feel like you have been inundated with flyers in your letterbox featuring photos of the Lord Mayor, you would be right. In the past year some 9.5million! This is an extraordinary number. TV advertising has also increased by 1000% from $50,000 in 2016-17 to $590,406 in 2017-18. Millions of ratepayers' dollars is being spent on glossy brochures or TV ads while roads need resurfacing, schools and rail stations need safer crossing points for pedestrians and footpaths are crumbling. I do not believe this is a good use of Council funds. And frankly it makes me mad seeing all the essential work on basic services that need doing in our district and around the City, like this footpath in Corinda (pictured). I have now been told that it may be up to two years before damaged footpaths will be fixed because there is such a backlog.

Putting aside the fight to fix things, I am also pushing Council to upgrade a notorious traffic bottleneck by working co-operatively with the State Government to widen, not raise, the low rail bridge separating Corinda and Sherwood. The State has committed to undertake the project by widening the bridge, but the Lord Mayor is yet to commit to the roadworks. You can help by signing the petition here. The petition closes on 24 Nov, 2018. Thank you to the hundreds of people who have already signed. Together, we can get Council to act.

Regards, Nicole.

P.S. Congratulations to Corinda SHS, Queensland's first and Australia's only carbon neutral school. Well done to school captain Dhruv Singh for leading the way on behalf of the school in gaining funding for Queensland's School Solar Programme.

SHERWOOD ROAD REFUGE PROPOSAL

This year Council has allocated $75,000 in the Budget for a centre island pedestrian refuge on Sherwood Rd near Egmont St, Sherwood.

The refuge will provide a safe crossing point on busy Sherwood Rd for children travelling to Sherwood State School or for residents accessing local parks, shops and the nearby Oxley Creek Common. It will also provide better connectivity between Sherwood and Corinda via the Jerrold St pedestrian tunnel under Tennyson Spur Line.

The proposal will also include upgraded lighting and a request for a safety cage around the pedestrian island (similar to Graceville Ave) has also been made.

There are pros and cons to the proposal. The pros are significant including better and safer connectivity for students and local residents crossing Sherwood Rd, better access to the nominated cycling route and improved links to Strickland Terrace Park and the Oxley Creek Common. The main con or impact is the loss of on-street car parking needed to achieve the 20m sightline required on each side of the refuge.

Council has developed three options:

  • Option 1 west of Egmont St - this is the preferred option, as it has clear sightlines and provides a footpath connection in Egmont St, but will result in the loss of some on-street parking. No impact on lane space, through traffic and vehicles turning into Egmont St.

  • Option 2 between Egmont and Jerrold St - clear sightlines, requires pedestrians and cyclists to also cross Egmont St to access the footpath, and will result in the loss of some on-street parking, particularly in front of the mower shop and reduced lane width.

  • Option 3 east of Jerrold St - this is the least preferred option, as pedestrians will be subject to through traffic on Sherwood Rd and turning traffic from Jerrold St, which is accident-prone. However, the loss of on-street parking is minimised.

My main objective is to ensure the proposed refuge is practical and safe for pedestrians and cyclists.

You can review the plans in colour online on my website here or call my office on 34038605 or email tennyson.ward@bcc.qld.gov.au and we can send you a hard copy of the plans. Please email me with your preferred option by Friday, 30 November 2018.

This request has been on Council's waiting list for approximately 10 years. Why Council has funded it above other projects of equal need in the ward is unclear but it is not often that we are allocated funding for these projects. Other locations in Sherwood where refuges have been requested and already listed on Council's capital works list awaiting funding are at the cnr Hedges and Skew St near Sherwood Station, Dewar Tce at Marlborough St and Honour Ave at Marlborough St.

GRACEVILLE COMMUNITY TREE PLANTING DAY

Come and help me green-up Graceville! Council has scheduled a community tree planting day in Graceville from 9-11am on Saturday, 24 November 2018.

Around 300 trees will be planted to replace those lost in storms and through natural attrition. Council digs the holes, so the tree planting day is suitable for people of all ages and is a fun and rewarding family activity. Free trees are given to all participants to take home.

Residents will receive a flyer about two weeks before hand and a blue cross will be marked on footpaths receiving a new street tree. You can choose to opt out by calling 3271 5911 or my office on 3403 8605. My office has a species list if you are interested in the type of tree being planted in your street.

The area being planted is Graceville East between Nadine St, Long St East and Oxley Rd. If you are outside this area and would like a street tree on your frontage, please call my office and we will request one for you.

Please bring water, sunscreen and a hat and meet at the Boat Park (Simpson's Playground), Graceville Riverside Park cnr Graceville Ave and Nadine St at 9am, Saturday, 24 November. A BBQ lunch follows.

REMEMBRANCE DAY 2018

2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. Every year at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, one minutes silence is observed throughout the country in remembrance of those who lost their lives during war.

This year, Tennyson Ward will commemorate Remembrance Day with two local RSL services held by the Stephens RSL and the Sherwood-Indooroopilly RSL.

The Sherwood-Indooroopilly Sub Branch RSL 2018 Remembrance Day service will commence in Graceville Memorial Park at 10.30am, Sunday, November 11. The RSL are also undertaking a march for this special occasion. Assembly will be outside the Graceville train station on Appel St at 10am for a 10:15am march off to Graceville Memorial Park. Everyone is welcome to march.

The Stephens Sub Branch RSL 2018 Remembrance Day service will commence in Yeronga Memorial Park at 10.30am, Sunday, November 11. As part of the WW1 Armistice Centenary events, a public "Remembrance Walk" will be held prior to the Memorial Service along Honour Avenue commencing from the Park Road gates at 9:45am. Along the route, school students will be calling out the names of the 97 servicemen from the Stephens Shire who did not return. All are welcome to join the walk.

All are welcome to attend these services to pay their respects to those Australians who lost their lives or suffered during war and armed conflict.

BUS STOP ACCESSIBILITY IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM

Council is undertaking works to improve the accessibility of bus stops across the City. As part of the Bus Stop Accessibility Improvement Program, 6,600 Brisbane bus stops will undergo upgrades and maintenance works to boarding points, access paths, waiting areas, signs, tactile ground surface indicators and bus stop seats to ensure compliance with disability and accessibility regulations.

  • Bus stop #1606, Honour Ave, Graceville, near Verney Rd

There may be some minor local impacts during work hours of between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday, however some out of hours works may be required. Every effort will be made to minimise disruption to the local community.

IT'S MAGPIE SEASON!

Between July and December some of Brisbane's native bird species, particularly Magpies, may become defensive and swoop people who venture too close to their nesting site.

Most magpies and other swooping bird species will accept the presence of people within their territories, however when attacks do occur, they usually take place within a one hundred metre radius around the tree containing the nest.

While Magpies are a nuisance, they are protected under the State Wildlife Legislation (Nature Conservation Act 1992) and therefore, are not moved or harmed by Council. If you notice a Magpie or other bird species is swooping, please let my office know and we can ask Council to erect warning signage at the location. My office can be contacted on 3403 8605 or, after hours, contact the Council Call Centre on 3403 8888.

In the meantime, there are several things you can do to try and discourage magpies from nesting in your yard. Ensure you:
  • do not feed magpies, ensure no scraps of food or rubbish are left lying around
  • remove unnecessary sources of water from the backyard (if magpies are causing a nuisance)
  • do not remove nests or eggs and never touch a young bird. If you are concerned for the safety of the young, phone Council's Native Animal Ambulance on 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625)
  • do not disturb the birds when there are fledglings in the nest
  • do not throw objects at the bird or destroy the nest as this will increase their defence efforts

Sherwood arboretum tree maintenance
In coming weeks, Council will undertake tree trimming works to a senescent gum tree in Sherwood Arboretum to remove dead wood and reduce the canopy.

A wildlife spotter will be on site to ensure minimal impact on wildlife using or nesting in the tree. Work will begin in week ending 9 November, weather permitting.

Queensland Urban Utilities Smoke Testing Program
To help reduce or eliminate the impacts to customers affected by sewer overflows, Queensland Urban Utilities (QUU) are now commencing a new round of smoke testing in our Graceville (Haldane and Coleman St) catchment.

Project background
This inspection involves blowing non-toxic smoke into sewer maintenance holes which helps identify broken pipes or inappropriate stormwater connections into the sewerage system. If the sewer pipe is functioning correctly, the smoke will escape through sewer vent pipes, usually located on the roof of the house. Smoke emitted from the ground or other areas, such as roof downpipes, may indicate that there are broken pipes or inappropriate stormwater connections into the sewerage system.

Communication activities
Queensland Urban Utilities' authorised Water Connection Officers will be completing the testing over the next few weeks and have issued notification letters to properties to be tested.

Following the testing results, Queensland Urban Utilities will contact individual property owners with a notification of the defect identified at their property, and providing an opportunity to rectify the problem.
