Hi
everyone
Good news! Council and the State Government have agreed to a Memorandum
of Understanding (MOU) to progress planning for an upgrade to the low rail bridge at Corinda.
It's early days, but forward progress can now be made with both levels of government working together.
I've been pushing for this dangerous bottleneck to be widened, not raised, for many years to make it safer
for vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists. No doubt it will take some years, but I look forward to working
with our community as the project progresses. This is such good news after a significant lack of investment
in safety and congestion busting in the district.
I remain very concerned about the management
of Council's riverside parks. The parkland edges are not being mown properly and in some cases it's been
years of neglect with significant woody weed build up. Council has a specialist mowing contract for difficult
areas but refuses to add the edges of these parks to that contract. The general mowers refuse to go close
to the edge and the weeds and grass continue to grow. I have another meeting with the head of Council
operations for our region, the Chairperson responsible for City Standards and mowing contractors this
week to raise the issues again.
Good news! Council continues to relax COVID-19 restrictions
following State and Federal Government advice. You can now borrow and browse in libraries (max 20 people)
and planning to reopen pools is underway. For more details see the story below.
With school
going back, please exercise caution during drop off and pick up. Council and police will be patrolling.
Blocking streets by queing is not ok and you may be fined. Please park and walk or do a lap around the
block -- be safe!
Regards, Nicole.
Council
All outdoor gyms,
skate parks, playgrounds, exercise equipment, basketball facilities, BMX tracks, barbecues and dog parks
are now open.
All Council libraries are
open for up to 20 people at a time for browsing, internet access in 15-minute sessions and printing. Hold
fees are waived. Library members can also access resources online, including E-books and audiobooks. Membership
is free. You can apply via Council's website.
Some of Council's
outdoor Active and Healthy program activities have resumed and are capped at a maximum
of 20 people. For a full list, see the 'What's On' section of the newsletter.
On-street parking meters are now operating as normal.
Bus passengers (except those requiring assistance) must board from the rear door. Ferry
and bus services are only accepting Go Cards -- no cash ticket sales.
All Council pools remain closed until further notice with the exception
of The Valley Pool, which is open for bookings. A plan is underway for the reopening of all pools.
All kerbside collections have been cancelled. Tips
remain open and Council tip shops are scheduled to reopen on 13 June.
Community composting hubs are scheduled to reopen on 13 June.
Pedestrian traffic signals in high demand areas are now automatically triggered.
This means you do not have to press the button when wanting to cross the road.

FAIRFIELD RAIL
UPGRADE UPDATE
Mildmay
St Zebra Crossing Petition
The State Government has confirmed that a zebra crossing
outside Fairfield Rail Station across Mildmay St is not part the station upgrade project. To date, Council
has failed to provide any pedestrian facilities been the station and shopping centre despite multiple
requests. It strikes me as perverse that neither the State Government nor Council see the importance of
improving pedestrian access to the new station as part of
the project.
Let's send them a clear message that better pedestrian facilities are needed
for support public and active transport in Fairfield and Annerley. Sign the petition here
and let's campaign for a zebra crossing on Mildmay St to provide safer access to the station and shops.There
is a hard copy on the front counter of my office to sign as well.
CITY OF LIGHTS
PROJECT CORINDA LIBRARY
Council
has chosen Corinda Library as the site for a creative lighting project under the the City of Lights program.
The lighting project consists of catenary lighting, or fairy lights, above the laneway at the side of
the library and circular gobo projections onto the paved area outside the library.
Council
have comissioned 12 original artworks for the gobo projections that I'm told will "reflect the local area".
I will be interested to see what they've come up with. There has been no consultation with anyone in our
community about this which is a bit of a lost opportunity in my view. Installation is scheduled for completion
by the end of June.

IPSWICH/VENNER RD PETITION
Council
has been too slow to act following recent deaths and I hope you will sign the e-petition below to help
put pressure on Council to act. The lack of planning and investment for the southern suburbs transport
infrastructure is wrong and must change.
Over the past five years there have been 95 recorded crashes,
nine involving pedestrians in the survey area (Ipswich Rd between Annerley Rd and Cracknell Rd). Ipswich
Rd is a well-known state-wide top five accident hot spot. Traffic volumes are forecast to almost double
over the next 12 years. Still no action.
Council has undertaken a number of reviews, including Move
Safe and a Pedestrian Road Safety Review but has not acted on the recommendations. Other promised reviews
are being kept secret.
Sign the petition here
and help me force Council to work with our community to fix Ipswich Rd, Venner Rd and revitalise Annerley
by:
-
reducing the speed limit through Annerley Junction shopping precinct to 40kms;
-
installing flashing school zone signage to protect JPSS children crossing the road;
-
upgrading the intersection of Ipswich Rd, Venner Rd and Waterton St to include proper signalised
turning lanes;
-
undertaking a feasibility study for a tunnel bypass under Ipswich Rd to
reclaim surface streets for local traffic movements, better public transport, cycling and pedestrian infrastructure;
-
installing a green arrow or zebra crossing at the intersection of Ekibin Rd and Ipswich
Rd;
-
undertaking a Village Precinct Project in Annerley Junction to improve amenity, safety
and build revitalise community spaces;
-
building new footpath, lighting and cycling infrastructure
to promote active travel;
-
delivering better local bus services through Annerley;
-
delivering the promised Venner Rd Freight Bypass to take trucks off Venner Rd; and
-
delivering traffic calming solutions in Annerley side streets to discourage rat running.
Ipswich Rd divides our community and Council must take action before another life is lost.

Park
Rd, Yeronga is posted as 50km/h. The sign, which is in the school zone outside Yeronga State
School, collected data for a 7 week period from 9 February to 29 March, 2020. During this time 137,778
vehicles (av. 2,812 per day) passed through the portable speed sign zone.
28,585 or 20.7% of
all drivers were recorded travelling above the posted speed limit. Of the vehicles speeding, 85% were
travelling at or below 55km/h. When prompted, speeding drivers reduced their speeds by an average of 2km
to 53km/h within the speed camera range.
Hyde Rd, Yeronga is posted as 50km/h.
The sign collected data for a 7 week period from 9 February to 29 March, 2020. During this time 116,418
vehicles (av. 2,376 per day) passed through the portable speed sign zone.
49,784 or 42.8% of all drivers were recorded travelling above the posted speed limit. Of the vehicles
speeding, 85% were travelling at or below 59km/h. When prompted, speeding drivers reduced their speeds
by an average of 4km to 55km/h within the speed camera range. It is 50km/h along Hyde Rd and it is really
important that drivers slow down given the number of elderly people who now live in the local area.
Please slow down around the busy school and pedestrian hot spots!
