MESSAGE FROM NICOLE
Hi everyone

Great news - the new pathway lighting has been installed in the Lagonda St and Vallelly St Parks, which will significantly improve visibility for residents walking through the park at night. I was delighted to work on this project with local residents and the feedback about the new play equipment has been great with people of all ages, particularly dads it seems, enjoying the flying fox. This has been a big project with $190,000 invested in the new playground and lighting from the Tennyson Ward Parks and Footpath Trust Funds.

Other projects being funded this year in the local area include a new shade sail for the playground in Leyshon Park on William Pde, a new shelter at the Fairfield dog park and new footpaths in Crutchley St, Fairfield and Shottery St, Yeronga. Council is also undertaking a watering programme in the new Yeronga dog park, as the dry weather has taken a toll on the new grass.

Sign the e-petition here  for better bus services in Yeronga. Every week this issue is raised with me and we need to speak up, so Translink is listening and we get a better bus service in Yeronga. More detail about what is proposed are noted in the story below.

Regards, Nicole.
'LOCAL HEROES' AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS 2019

The 'Local Heroes' Australia Day Community Service Awards were held on Australia Day at the Oxley Bowls Club to recognise the relentless work of our prominent local volunteers.

There are so many unsung heroes from all walks of life in our community who work behind the scenes to build and strengthen their neighbourhood and our district, and this award was created to ensure they are recognised in our local community for their efforts.

This year, Cr Steve Griffiths and I had the honour of presenting the following extremely hardworking community members with their award:

  • Kylie Fry - Sherwood Girl Guides
  • Nancy Liyou - Pamphlett Sea Scouts, volunteer at Graceville State School and local kindergartens, Community Flood Appeal, Tennyson Residents' Association, Queensland Youth Orchestra
  • Melanie Grodecki - Women's Legal Service
  • Sheryl Dowley - Western Districts Netball Association
  • Mark Laidlaw - Kurilpa Scout Group
  • Sandra Howard - Sherwood Community Festival
  • Geoff Ivett - Sherwood Meals on Wheels
  • Stan and Claire Moore - Oxley Neighbourhood Watch, Sherwood Meals on Wheels, Corinda State School P&C
  • Craig Williams - Oxley Litter Clean-up Group, Rocks Riverside Parkruns
  • Jennifer Bennetts - Boomerang Bags Oxley
  • Tim Swifte - Moorooka Lions Club, has assisted countless other community groups

A big thank you to all the volunteers from Club Oxley, Rotary, Lions, Oxley NHW and CWA for helping make the Australia Day Pool Party such a success.

BETTER BUS SERVICES FOR YERONGA

One of the issues most regularly raised with me is the need for more frequent and reliable bus services for Yeronga residents. In past years, we have had to fight to minimise cuts and even keep existing services, but with Council's Brisbane Metro bus project underway now is the time to be proactive about improvements to bus services before changes are forced on us. Major changes to bus timetables will accompany the Brisbane Metro, so it is important we speak up as a community about our need for better bus services.

Brisbane City Council works in partnership with the State Government to deliver bus services, so it is important we send the clear message to both levels of government that our Yeronga community wants a better bus service before they undertake their next major bus timetable review.

The 104, 105 and 107 are useful local bus services, but are not frequent or reliable. The 196 Buz service is brilliant, but terminates at Fairfield Gardens where parking is restricted. A great outcome would be to add a short loop through Yeronga to the existing 196 route. This might be, for example, up Kadumba St and back down Hyde Rd, servicing The Village and local schools and shops.

I have started a petition calling for a Yeronga loop to be developed and consultation undertaken to determine our community's preferred route. You can sign the e-petition here.

SAM SIGNS GET RESULTS

Since 2013, the Speed Awareness Monitors (SAM) signs have been located in various traffic hotspots around the Tennyson Ward 55 times. The signs, which flash a smiley face to vehicles travelling the speed limit and a slow down message to those who are not, have produced some interesting results.

The following are the top ten streets with the highest number of speeding vehicles and the top five with the lowest:

Top Ten Highest

  1. Villa St, Yeronga (school zone) - 61%
  2. Dewar Tce, Sherwood -54%
  3. Brisbane Corso, Fairfield x3 - 40%
  4. Brisbane Corso, Fairfield - 37%
  5. Ferndale St, Annerley (school zone) x4 - 36%
  6. Kadumba St, Yeronga - 36%
  7. Park Rd, Yeronga (school zone) x4 - 27%
  8. Sarah St, Annerley - 25%
  9. Oxley Rd, Sherwood (school zone) - 24%
  10. Oxley Rd, Graceville (school zone) - 18%

Top Five Lowest

  1. Clewley St, Corinda (school zone) - 1%
  2. Annerley Rd, Annerley - 1.5%
  3. Ardoyne Rd, Oxley - 1.8%
  4. Randolph St, Graceville (school zone) - 3%
  5. Venner Rd, Annerley - 5%

Between 18% and 61% of vehicles in the top ten streets were speeding, four of which are within school zones. The SAM signs had quite a significant influence on speeding vehicles, reducing the percentage of speeding vehicles to between 8% and 20%.

Of the five lowest streets for speeding, between 1% and 5% of vehicles were speeding, two of which were within school zones. The SAM sign reduced this further to between 0.4% and 1%.

Please remember to slow down around our schools.

STORIES OF STEPHENS II CONFERENCE BURSARIES

The Annerley-Stephens History Group is offering 22 Bursaries to allow students with an interest in local history to attend the Stories of Stephens II conference at Marymac Community Centre on 23 February 2019 - free of charge.

To apply for a bursary, please provide your name, age, contact details and link with the Stephens area. This link may be the suburb in which you live, the location of the school you attend or a family link, such as relatives who grew up in the Stephens area. To apply, email the group at annerleystephenshistorygroupin@gmail.com.

The bursary provides for attendance at the conference, as well as Lunch and Morning and Afternoon tea.

The focus of the Annerley-Stephens History Group is the communication of history to the people of the local communities and the ten suburbs within the old Stephens Shire Council, which was incorporated into the Brisbane City Council in 1925. While having only been in operation for five years, the group have had significant achievements including winning the Queensland State Library John Oxley Community History award for 2017 - the first time that the award had been made to a Brisbane based history group in many years.

You can find out more about the group and Bursaries at their website here.

SOUTHS CRICKET FLOOD DAMAGE REPAIRS

The South Brisbane District Cricket Club has been successful in obtaining $35,000 from Council to undertake structural repairs to their clubhouse following problems with the post-2011 flood rebuild.

Works include repairs to ceiling damage, wall joints and cracks and the installation of new down pipes. Builders are currently on site and will take approximately 2-3 weeks to complete the work.

This has been a long time coming for the Club, who were severely affected by the January 2011 floods, when their main oval and club house were inundated and sustained permanent damage. The Club has been very active in undertaking recovery activities and have been working hard to re-build and restore their grounds and facilities and I am very happy to hear these much-needed repair works are taking place.

Three clubs around the city were chosen as part of the $218,000 commitment from Council to address major structural damage.

SPORTS FIELD TESTING PROGRAM

A number of local sporting groups have been chosen to receive an audit of soil and turf conditions through Council's Sports Field Testing Program. Congratulations to Sherwood Football Club, Western Suburbs District Cricket Club, Kenmore AFL, Chelmer Sports Club, Oxley United Soccer and Sporting Club, Western Districts Netball Association and Souths Junior Cricket Club.

Minor works will be undertaken to produce an agronomical assessment of the playing surface, including assessment of moisture content, soil compactness, turf cover, basic soil description, root depth, playing field evenness and filtration rate. These works will test the surface hardness, soil nutrients and turf health to allow benchmarking and ranking of fields to determine those selected for future major projects and field investment. All a bit technical, but hopefully useful data for the clubs' field management.

Council's contractor, IVM Solutions Pty Ltd, will undertake these works, which are scheduled to take place from now until February 2019.

ATM FOR FAIRFIELD GARDENS

After much disgruntled feedback from patrons, Fairfield Gardens Shopping Centre have finally installed a new ATM after they were all removed from the centre last year.

However, the new ATM, located outside Coles, is operated by ATM 2 Go and will incur a fee for users.

This is good news for those whose preferred payment is cash, but unfortunately there will be a cost involved. You can continue to withdraw cash at the Post Office or Coles service desk, but there is a limit on these withdrawals.

BRISBANE PORTRAIT PRIZE

ROAD AND CONSTRUCTION WORKS

DUST SUPPRESSION TREATMENT BRISBANE CORSO

In coming weeks, Council will install a dust suppression treatment at the entrance to Equus Terra on the Brisbane Corso at Yeronga. The treatment, which is like a sticky glue, will help minimise dust created by vehicles accessing the site and allow access to remain open at all times. Application is expected to be completed before 22 February, weather permitting and its effectiveness will be monitored.

FOOTPATH CONSTRUCTION

  • Grove St, Woolloongabba

From 20 February, 2019:

  • Crown St, Woolloongabba
  • Heaslop St, Woolloongabba
  • Lockhart St, Woolloongabba

For full details on these changes, visit Council's website here. Construction at each intersection will involve asphalting, installation of signage, and line marking, which should take approximately four weeks to complete, weather and conditions permitting. Work will generally take place between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Saturday.

the local area may experience noise, dust, low levels of vibration, lane closures and some traffic delays. Traffic detours, signage and traffic control will be in place to guide road users through the site. Please follow all directional signage during construction to ensure the safety of all road users and workers. Thank you for your patience during this work.

TREE MAINTENANCE AND REPLANTING, FAIRFIELD

A number of newly-planted trees in Rowlinson Park, Fairfield and surrounding streets included in the Fairfield Community Planting Day are suffering heat stress due to the very hot and dry summer period and will require removal and replacement, which will be undertaken once the drought-like conditions pass.

If you notice a tree on your frontage is struggling due to heat, please let my office know on 3403 8605 and we will ask Council to inspect it.

BUS STOP ACCESSIBILITY UPGRADE

Council is currently rolling out their Bus Stop Accessibility Improvement Program, which aims to ensure that all bus stops are compliant with relevant standards and are convenient, safe and accessible for all public transport users.

The following bus stops will be upgraded in the coming months:

  • #1623: Long St at Haldane Street, stop 52, Graceville
  • #3710: Brisbane Corso near William Pde, stop 24/17, Fairfield

To complete these works and to maintain bus stop accessibility, Council will be:

  • removing one ivory curl tree (Buckinghamia celsissima) as part of the upgrade to bus stop #4902.
