MESSAGE FROM NICOLE
Hi everyone,

A big thank you to Wendy from Graceville Fine Foods and Deli for organising a Townsville Flood Relief drive in conjunction with Flood Relief NQ. Sadly, our community knows only too well the catastrophic impacts of major flooding and the donations from local families were amazing. The goods arrived on Wednesday.

You can read more on the ABC website here. It's hard to believe Wendy organised the drought collection just last year for farmers, who are again struggling. Thank you Wendy and all the wonderful residents who donated goods and hope to flood affected Townsville residents.

Regards, Nicole.

Ps.. speak up and sign the petition for a zebra crossing outside Graceville Rail Station here. More details below.
GRACEVILLE STATION ZEBRA CROSSING PETITION

We are still waiting for Council to deliver on the new zebra crossing and build outs near the intersection of Appel St and Verney Rd E to provide a safe crossing point to Graceville Rail Station and for students heading to Graceville SS amd CTK.

Last year the Rail Station was upgraded but no safe crossing point to access the Station was delivered.

This project has been listed for many years as a priority in my Tennyson Ward Budget submission and identified as a high priority by the community in the recent Move Safe survey undertaken by Council. No response from the Lord Mayor though.

Please sign the petition here and let's send Council a message that safe access to public transport is a priority for our community.

'LOCAL HEROES' AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS 2019

The 'Local Heroes' Australia Day Community Service Awards were held on Australia Day at the Oxley Bowls Club to recognise the relentless work of our prominent local volunteers.

There are so many unsung heroes from all walks of life in our community who work behind the scenes to build and strengthen their neighbourhood and our district, and this award was created to ensure they are recognised in our local community for their efforts.

This year, Cr Steve Griffiths and I had the honour of presenting the following extremely hardworking community members with their award:

  • Kylie Fry - Sherwood Girl Guides
  • Nancy Liyou - Pamphlett Sea Scouts, volunteer at Graceville State School and local kindergartens, Community Flood Appeal, Tennyson Residents' Association, Queensland Youth Orchestra
  • Melanie Grodecki - Women's Legal Service
  • Sheryl Dowley - Western Districts Netball Association
  • Mark Laidlaw - Kurilpa Scout Group
  • Sandra Howard - Sherwood Community Festival
  • Geoff Ivett - Sherwood Meals on Wheels
  • Stan and Claire Moore - Oxley Neighbourhood Watch, Sherwood Meals on Wheels, Corinda State School P&C
  • Craig Williams - Oxley Litter Clean-up Group, Rocks Riverside Parkruns
  • Jennifer Bennetts - Boomerang Bags Oxley
  • Tim Swifte - Moorooka Lions Club, has assisted countless other community groups

A big thank you to all the volunteers from Club Oxley, Rotary, Lions, Oxley NHW and CWA for helping make the Australia Day Pool Party such a success.

DUNLOP PARK PLAYGROUND UPDATE

Thank you to all the residents who contributed ideas for the playground upgrade at Dunlop Park, Corinda near the pool.

A design has now been finalised and Council will begin preliminary works in coming weeks with construction to begin in April/May, weather permitting.

The Budget is $130,000, which sounds like a lot, but unfortunately isn't and it is likely that the project will be delivered over two years.

Stage one will include:

  • a new playground, including interactive fort ($110,000), which includes:
    • climbing and agility equipment for both toddlers and older kids;
    • swing set, including toddler and basket swings;
    • Jeep rocker; and
    • spinner/ caroussel.
  • shade sail (approx $25,000);
  • new tap and dog bowl;
  • new bins; and
  • top soil to level the entrance to Oxley Rd.

Stage two will include (when funding permits):

  • learner bike circuit; and
  • footpath to the playground from Oxley Rd.

Thank you again to everyone who gave feedback on the playground. You can visit my website here to view the design in more detail.

SAM SIGNS GET RESULTS

Since 2013, the Speed Awareness Monitors (SAM) signs have been located in various traffic hotspots around the Tennyson Ward 55 times. The signs, which flash a smiley face to vehicles travelling the speed limit and a slow down message to those who are not, have produced some interesting results.

The following are the top ten streets with the highest number of speeding vehicles and the top five with the lowest:

Top Ten Highest

  1. Villa St, Yeronga (school zone) - 61%
  2. Dewar Tce, Sherwood -54%
  3. Brisbane Corso, Fairfield x3 - 40%
  4. Brisbane Corso, Fairfield - 37%
  5. Ferndale St, Annerley (school zone) x4 - 36%
  6. Kadumba St, Yeronga - 36%
  7. Park Rd, Yeronga (school zone) x4 - 27%
  8. Sarah St, Annerley - 25%
  9. Oxley Rd, Sherwood (school zone) - 24%
  10. Oxley Rd, Graceville (school zone) - 18%

Top Five Lowest

  1. Clewley St, Corinda (school zone) - 1%
  2. Annerley Rd, Annerley - 1.5%
  3. Ardoyne Rd, Oxley - 1.8%
  4. Randolph St, Graceville (school zone) - 3%
  5. Venner Rd, Annerley - 5%

Between 18% and 61% of vehicles in the top ten streets were speeding, four of which are within school zones. The SAM signs had quite a significant influence on speeding vehicles, reducing the percentage of speeding vehicles to between 8% and 20%.

Of the five lowest streets for speeding, between 1% and 5% of vehicles were speeding, two of which were within school zones. The SAM sign reduced this further to between 0.4% and 1%.
Please remember to slow down around our schools.

LOCAL NEWS AND EVENTS

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE: 58-64 RAILWAY TCE, SHERWOOD

A development application for 38 townhouses at 58-64 Railway Tce, Sherwood (facing Corinda) has been approved by Council. The plan includes two separate complexes to be completed in two stages, one containing 18 townhouses and the other 20. The mix of two and three storey townhouses range in size from three to four bedrooms, with a mix of one and two car garages.

If you are impacted by any construction works, please contact my office on 3403 8605, or Council's 24/7 Call Centre on 3403 8888.

I strongly opposed this DA, as it is a gross overdevelopment of the site and will have traffic and access issues in an otherwise quiet part of Corinda. Unfortunately, this pro-development Council has now approved the development.

NEW COMMUNITY COMPOSTING HUB AT GRACEVILLE

Council has established a brand new community composting hub at Graceville Community Garden, 79 Waratah Ave, Graceville.

The new hub is now open for use and allows local residents to utilise composting facilities, while providing the on-site community garden with compost fertiliser.

As part of the program, participating residents receive a free kitchen caddy to help collect and transport scraps to the compost bins located within the community garden. If you are already registered for community composting, there is no need to re-register to start visiting the Graceville hub. New composting caddys are available for collection from my office at Fairfield Gardens Shopping Centre, 180 Fairfield Rd, Fairfield.

For more information or to register for the program, visit Council's website here.

The community garden meets every Sunday morning from 7-9am. All are welcome to come along and lend a hand. Contact Paul on 3379 7998 for more information.

SPORTS FIELD TESTING PROGRAM

Over the next few weeks, Council will be undertaking an audit of soil and turf conditions at a number of local sporting fields through Council's Sports Field Testing Program. Sherwood Football Club, Western Suburbs District Cricket Club, Kenmore AFL, Chelmer Sports Club, Oxley United Soccer and Sporting Club, Western Districts Netball Association and Souths Junior Cricket Club have been chosen as part of the audit.

Minor works will be undertaken to produce an agronomical assessment of the playing surface, including assessment of moisture content, soil compactness, turf cover, basic soil description, root depth, playing field evenness and filtration rate. These works will test the surface hardness, soil nutrients and turf health to allow benchmarking and ranking of fields to determine those selected for future major projects and field investment. All a bit technical, but hopefully useful data for the clubs' field management.

Council's contractor, IVM Solutions Pty Ltd, will undertake these works, which are scheduled to take place from now until February 2019.

BRISBANE PORTRAIT PRIZE

Applications for the Brisbane Portrait Prize are now open for artists wishing to showcase their best contemporary portraiture while celebrating the City's character.

The following prizes will be awarded:

  • Lord Mayor's Prize - all entries eligible - $50,000
  • Digital - any digitally created still work, including photography - $10,000
  • Courier-Mail People's Choice Award - chosen by popular vote from all finalists - $7,500
  • Sylvia Jones Prize for Women Artists - open to all women - $5,000

Finalists will have their portraits exhibited at the Brisbane Powerhouse during October 2019 with winners to be announced on 2 October.

For more information or to enter visit the Brisbane Portrait Prize website here.
