MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi Everyone

I had my first meeting with the new Lord Mayor, Adrian Schrinner, during the week and discussed a range of issues in the Ward including Budget priorities, new local parkland and bushland opportunities as part of his $20m acquisition announcement, and the future of the Annerley Bookshop. Whilst no solid outcomes yet, the Lord Mayor listened and promised to get back to me. On the Budget, I am hopeful that we will see some funding fairness in the allocation for important small and big projects in Tennyson Ward. The Council Budget will be handed down on Wednesday, 12 June so I will let you know in a few weeks.

Congratulations to the Graceville Croquet Club who celebrated their 100th anniversary last weekend.  It was a wonderful day to celebrate their achievements and officially launch the restored pavilion thanks to a $100,000 Council grant. The competition was hot as Graceville bested Stephens in the inaugural Pamphlett Bridge Challenge Cup!

Don't miss the fabulous Sherwood State School Mother's Day Fete on Saturday from 8.30am until 4pm. The food and fun is always amazing and all the proceeds are invested back into projects to support the School. I'll see you there!

Regards, Nicole.

DUNLOP PARK PLAYGROUND, CORINDA UPDATE

Work will begin next week on the new playground at Dunlop Park, Corinda.

The $130,000 project, to be undertaken in two stages, includes:

Stage 1:

  • a new playground, including interactive fort ($110,000), which includes:
  • climbing and agility equipment for both toddlers and older kids;
  • swing set, including toddler and basket swings;
  • Jeep rocker;
  • spinner/carousel;
  • shade sail (approx. $25,000);
  • new tap and dog bowl;
  • new bins; and
  • top soil to level the entrance to Oxley Rd.

Stage two (when funding permits):

  • learner bike circuit; and
  • footpath to the playground from Oxley Rd.

For a more detailed view of the design, visit my website here.

The park is due for completion by mid-June 2019, weather permitting, and I will be in touch closer to this time with details on the official launch.

GOLD STAR AND LITTLE STARS READING CLUB

The 2019 Gold Star Reading Club program for children aged 6-12 years and the Little Stars Reading Club program for children aged 0-5 years has begun again this year and runs until 31 July.

The program provides fun, incentive based reading activities for children to improve their literacy and reading skills. Membership is free and you can register at your local library.

By reading a minimum of two books (Little Stars) or three books (Gold Star) of their choice each month, completing a series of activities and recording the details in their activity book, children can collect six (Little Stars) or nine (Gold Star) gold stars and monthly incentive rewards.

Children who collect all six or nine gold stars are eligible to:

  • receive a medallion and a certificate of achievement
  • attend their local awards ceremony with their family

To find out more about the program, visit Council's website here or sign up at the Corinda Library now!

IT'S FETE SEASON!

NEW FOOTPATH - CENTRAL AVE, SHERWOOD

Work on the new footpath in Central Ave, Sherwood is now complete and ready for use!

Thank you to residents in the street for your patience during works. The new footpath looks great and will very much improve safety for those walking down the street with prams, wheelchairs and walkers.

Council will return in August 2019 to assess any minor maintenance works. However, if you notice any damage to the footpath, please let me know and I will ask Council to undertake repairs.

SHERWOOD STATE SCHOOL SIGNAGE CHANGES

As part of Sherwood State School's Traffic Management Plan, new parking signage has been installed around the school. This includes:

  • a new loading zone on McCulla St;
  • new parking bays on Sherwood Rd;
  • extension of existing bus zone on Sherwood Rd by 5m;
  • modifications to the existing loading zone on Sherwood Rd to allow long term parking outside the hours of 7-9am;
  • ¼ parking on part of Hall St from 7-9am and 2-4pm; and
  • conversion of the existing loading zone on Hall St to unrestricted parking.

These changes are now in place and will be enforced if not followed. For a detailed view of the changes, visit my website here.

SCHOOLS ANZAC CENTENARY PROJECT

With the help of local school students and residents, the Sherwood-Indooroopilly RSL has released its book The Great War 1914-1918, which tells the stories of the 84 local men and women who lost their lives during World War One.

Released on the centenary of the armistice on 11 November 2018, the book consists of brief bios on the 84 local fallen service men and women as written by local students and residents and is available in hard copy at local Brisbane libraries and in digital form on the RSL's website here.

Local schools that participated include:

  • Ambrose Treacy College
  • Brigidine College
  • Christ the King Primary School
  • Corinda State School
  • Corinda State High School

Well done to the Sherwood-Indooroopilly RSL and local students on all your hard work. The book is a wonderful local history resource that helps honour those from our community that fought and lost their lives in The Great War.

Council is seeking donations for those experiencing or at risk of homelessness.

You can assist by donating non-perishable food and/or toiletry items until Friday, 14 June at my office at Fairfield Gardens Shopping Centre, 180 Fairfield Rd, Fairfield.

Homeless Connect brings together business and community groups at a one-day event to give free services to people experiencing homelessness or those at risk of homelessness. The project has helped more than 16,580 people since Brisbane City Council held the first Homeless Connect in Australia in November 2006.

Homeless Connect events provide the following:

  • housing support;
  • haircuts by volunteer barbers and hairdressers;
  • immunisation delivered by Council's immunisation team;
  • personal grooming items such as towels and face washers, toothbrushes and toothpaste, shampoo and deodorant;
  • clothes and shoes for adults, children and babies;

QUEENSLAND URBAN UTILITIES CONCEALED LEAK POLICY

Queensland Urban Utilities (QUU) have made some changes to their Concealed Leak Policy to help improve the experience for residents who have a concealed leak on their property.

A concealed leak is an underground water leak in the private plumbing pipework servicing a property. These leaks occur on the private property side of the water meter and are usually underground and hidden from view. There are often no visible signs of dampness, which can lead to costly water consumption costs.

QUU's Concealed Leak Policy aims to assist residents who have experienced a concealed leak by offering different levels of compensation, depending on the type of leak and property. For more information on these changes and the Policy, visit QUU's website here.

ROAD AND CONSTRUCTION WORKS

Khaki Weed Spray Program
During the week of 13 May 2019 (weather permitting), Council will undertake a one-off spray program for khaki weed within the dog off leash areas in the region.

The dog off leash areas will remain open, as the treatment is targeted directly at the weeds and presents no danger to dogs. However, if you have any concerns, the treatment will no longer be present the week following the spraying program.

Mosquito Spray Program
Council manages a number of known breeding sites that are monitored and treated for mosquito larvae around the City. The program includes treating standing water with larvicide to prevent the emergence of adult mosquitos. Known sites include drains, outlets and pools of water that remain after rain events. For a list of known sites within the Tennyson Ward, visit my website here.
