Hi everyone
The Council Budget for 2019-2020 was handed down today and it is a Budget of hits and misses locally.
The projects funded in Tennyson Ward reflect a range of necessary and welcome repairs and rehabilitation
rather than new things.
Major footpath rejuvenation works at the
Annerley Junction and Sherwood Shopping precincts, playground and lighting projects in Fairfield, and
rehabilitation of the heritage listed Camphor Laurels in Laurel Ave, Chelmer will boost the liveability
and amenity of some of our oldest, most gracious suburbs.
Whilst the scope of the project is unknown, $198,000 has been budgeted for 'congestion busting'
along Ipswich Rd, Annerley. I hope that this is for the road and pedestrian safety works we have been
calling for around Annerley Junction and Venner Rd. I will keep you updated when more details are known.
But it is frustrating when critical projects like the low rail bridge
at Corinda, the pedestrian crossing at Graceville Rail Station, drainage upgrades for Yeronga and backflow
valves are continually ignored. Traffic projects to cope with development and population growth in the
suburbs are woefully underdone in the Budget.
When I met with
the new Lord Mayor a few weeks ago, I gave him a shortlist of priority local projects (20) and road resurfacing
(15) from the Tennyson Ward Budget submission long list of 160. You can read it here.
I've ticked the ones delivered in the Budget. From this shortlist the Lord Mayor funded 4/20 projects
and 5/15 road resurfacing projects requested. I had hoped he would listen and act on the critically important
projects we have long been waiting for but sadly, there is not much change from the former Lord Mayor's
approach in this Budget.
As always, I will be ensuring
that the discretionary funds for footpaths, parks, community groups and events are stretched as far as
possible this year. I look forward to working with you to deliver these Budget initiatives.
Regards, Nicole.

WHAT'S NOT IN THE BUDGET LOCALLY
Each year, as your local Councillor, I put together a budget submission based on feedback
from local residents, community groups, schools, Council officers and my own observations. This is submitted
to the Lord Mayor who then personally determines what is funded in the Budget.
Some of the
projects the Lord Mayor has refused to fund, in some cases now for many years, include:
-
Victoria Tce, Chelmer, Woodville Pl, Annerley and Wylie St, Graceville road resurfacing;
-
safe school projects around Graceville State School, Christ the King and Yeronga State School;
-
dozens of local road safety and traffic calming projects including Howard St, Corinda,
and Skew St, Sherwood;
-
a new Sherwood Rd dedicated off-road bikeway and footpath;
-
major footpath repairs to Oxley Rd, Sherwood and Graceville;
-
Graceville
Fiveways shopping centre improvements;
-
backflow valves in Chelmer, Graceville, Yeronga,
Fairfield and Tennyson;
-
Intersection upgrades to Oxley Rd/Cliveden Ave, Corinda, Ipswich
Rd/Venner Rd, Annerley and the Graceville Fiveways;
-
widening (not raising) the
low rail bridge at Sherwood/Corinda;
-
safe crossing point Appel St, outside Graceville
Rail Station
I will keep fighting for important local projects in next year's budget.
A full copy of my local budget submission is available here.
