MESSAGE FROM NICOLE
Hi everyone

A big thank you to everyone who came out on Good Friday to cheer on the Commonwealth Games baton bearers. Huge crowds lined Oxley Rd with thousands attending the Sherwood Arboretum. Police told me it was the biggest turn out of the baton relay to date.

Council will be undertaking major road works in Yeerongpilly and Graceville over coming weeks with both Tennyson Memorial Ave and Honour Ave to be resurfaced. These projects will take several weeks and will be noisy and disruptive. Both roads are in terrible shape and need to be fixed so please be patient and drive carefully when roadworks start. More details are noted below.

A Camphor Laurel tree has died, of natural causes, near 64 Laurel Ave, Chelmer. It is due to be removed next week, weather permitting. The tree will be replaced in approx. 12 months by a semi mature tree that is currently being grown at Council's nursery.

Regards, Nicole.

Ps. I hope to see you all at Council's free rescheduled Movie in the Park at the Sherwood AFL Club, Chelmer on Saturday night 6.15pm with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 screening.

ROAD RESURFACING UNDERWAY

Council has commenced its $370,000 resurfacing project of Tennyson Memorial Avenue, Yeerongpilly.

The project will be undertaken until the end of May 2018, weather permitting. Works will occur at night between the hours of 8pm and 5am, Monday to Thursday, and local access will be maintained. If you experience any after hours problems associated with the road works you can call Council's 24/7 call centre on 3403 8888 or please contact my office during the day on 3403 8605.

Resurfacing generally happens in stages, as the asphalt needs time to cure and settle between layers and prior to the final line marking. The works will be disruptive and noisy at times and I thank you for your patience while this important upgrade is undertaken.

Please drive carefully if you are in these areas, as road conditions will have changed. Ultimately, this project has been long advocated for and should deliver a much safer and smoother driving experience for residents.

Once completed, Council will then begin major resurfacing works on Honour Avenue, Graceville. Neata St, Corinda will also be resurfaced in May.

CORINDA STATE SCHOOL ROAD SAFETY UPGRADE
Consultation on Council's proposed safety upgrades around Corinda State School is now complete. After receiving feedback from the school and nearby residents, we have requested Council undertake the following safety upgrades:
  1. Pedestrian refuge at the end of Stucol St at Cliveden Ave to help prevent U-turns on the pedestrian crossing. This includes potentially increasing the length of yellow lines on Stucol St to a car length or two to prevent parents parking too close to the intersection of Cliveden and Stucol.

  2. Pedestrian refuge  at the intersection of Cliveden Ave and Pratten St. This will provide a safer crossing point for families to access the park, High School, Primary School and properties beyond Pratten St.

These projects will help provide safer pathways to school for students and encourage drivers to slow down around the school.

The school also strongly supported a year long trial of a no right turn into Stucol St from Cliveden Ave between 2:30 and 3:30pm on school days. However, a survey of affected residents indicated that they were not supportive of these changes. I will keep trying for this trial in future on behalf of the School.

I am now waiting for confirmation by Council that these changes will go ahead. Thank you to local residents who returned their survey and the school P&C for their feedback. These upgrades will help improve traffic flow and make crossing the busy streets safer for students around this very busy school precinct.

COUNCIL RELEASES TRANSPORT PLAN

Council has released its Draft Transport Plan and the results are disappointing.

The Plan completely fails to identify key corridors and projects to improve active, public and road transport options around Brisbane in the future. No improvements have been proposed to the Oxley Rd corridor, including the major choke point at Walter Taylor Bridge, to alleviate long-term and growing congestion.

The plan also fails to deliver new bikeways in the area. In the 10 years I've been the Councillor for Tennyson, Council has announced over $220m for new bikeways around the City and not one has been delivered in Tennyson Ward. That will be 20 years and no new bikeways.

Council have made no mention of any safety upgrades around schools, including the $30,000 I have been pushing for to build a pedestrian refuge outside Graceville State School, a large active travel school.

As Council then completely ignored the hundreds of submissions (70% of all submissions city wide) made by me and Tennyson Ward residents to the LGIP last year, it is also clear that they are not interested at all in feedback that would help reduce traffic congestion, improve public and active transport and improve safety in my ward at all.

This Plan fails to address major safety and congestion issues in our local area and is a lost opportunity to effectively and practically plan for the real needs of Brisbane citizens and businesses.

You can review the Plan on Council's website here.

PORTABLE FLASHING SPEED SIGN INSTALLED ON ARDOYNE RD, OXLEY

Council's flashing portable speed sign has been reinstalled outside 104 Ardoyne Rd, Oxley.

The portable flashing speed sign is part of Council's programme to improve road safety around schools and other traffic hotspots. The sign shows a smiley face to vehicles travelling the speed limit and flashes a slow down warning to those speeding. The sign should help to quell speeding vehicles and make the area much safer.

The sign provides Council and the police with reliable information about traffic volumes and speeds. It has been shown to reduce traffic speeds in streets where it has been located to date by up to 10kms per hour.

The sign will stay at this location for approximately 6-8 weeks and will be continuously rotated throughout the ward.

DEVELOPMENT UPDATE

56 Victoria Ave, Chelmer - Subdivision and Building Works
A development application to subdivide the block into three has been lodged with Council for 56 Victoria Ave, Chelmer. The application proposes to undertake work on the existing character home and build two new, modern homes on the additional blocks. You can view the plans and make a submission on Council's website here.

336 Cliveden Ave, Corinda - Childcare Centre
A development application for a childcare centre at 336 Cliveden Ave, Corinda has been submitted to Council. This proposal is the house located in the middle of the school grounds along Cliveden Ave. The application proposes a three storey building, including rooftop play space, next to Corinda State School and will provide care for up to 74 children. You can view the application and make a submission on Council's website  here.

9-11 Donaldson St, Corinda - Childcare Centre
A childcare centre has been proposed for 9-11 Donaldson St, Corinda, opposite Coles. The plans propose the demolition of the existing two homes on the site to construct the centre for up to 92 children. To view the plans and make a submission, visit Council's website here

VOLUNTEER AT SHERWOOD PLACE

Sherwood Place is in desperate need of volunteer staff to support their aged clients at the Centre located on Thallon St, Sherwood from Monday to Friday. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Volunteer Coordinator Robyn Gaal via email on rgaal@prescare.org.au or by calling her on 3379 1051.

For over 20 years, Sherwood Place, formerly Sherwood Respite Service, has delivered vital services to people aged 65 and over in our community. Funded under the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP), the service offers assistance with social activities, outings and domestic chores to keep local residents connected in their community by promoting independence and wellness. Sherwood Place is now part of the Prescare organisation.

ROAD AND CONSTRUCTION WORKS

QUU Water Main Replacement- Glenrich St, Corinda

Queensland Urban Utilities are undertaking water main replacement of sections of pipe that are near the end of their service life. Some of the pipes that are due for replacement are made from 'bonded' asbestos cement, laid before 1954.

What's happening?
From Monday 16 April 2018 work will begin along the odd numbered side of Glenrich Street, Corinda between Oxley Road and the road end. The project will take up to 6 weeks to complete, weather and site conditions permitting.

The majority of the work will be completed during the day, between 6am and 6pm, Monday to Friday, and 7am to 2pm on Saturday (excluding public holidays).

Some night work may be required between 8pm and 5am to minimise the impacts of water outages when they connect the new water main to the network.

Asbestos removal
The work will be performed by licensed asbestos contractors in compliance with Work Health and Safety regulations. Stringent Safe Work Methods will be followed to ensure the safety of the public and our contractors. These precautions are included in the following process:

  • Placing barriers around the work areas while the excavation is undertaken.
  • Wetting down the asbestos cement pipe before it is removed.
  • Wrapping and disposing the removed asbestos cement material in a special bin.
  • Ensuring contractors wear personal protective equipment and signage is in place to let everyone know what is going on.

For more information, please contact QUU at community.feedback@urbanutilities.com.au  or 13 26 57 (7am to 7pm weekdays).
