MESSAGE FROM NICOLE
Hi everyone,

If you feel like you have been inundated with flyers in your letterbox featuring photos of the Lord Mayor, you would be right. In the past year some 9.5 million! This is an extraordinary number. TV advertising has also increased by 1000% from $50,000 in 2016-17 to $590,406 in 2017-18. Millions of ratepayers dollars is being spent on glossy brochures or TV ads while roads need resurfacing, schools and rail stations need safer crossing points for pedestrians, and footpaths are crumbling. I do not believe this is a good use of Council funds. And frankly it makes me mad seeing all the essential work on basic services that need doing in our district and around the City, like this footpath in Corinda (pictured). I have now been told that it may be up to two years before damaged footpaths will be fixed because there is such a backlog.

The Yeronga Movie in the Park has been rescheduled and is on Friday, 16 November with St Sebastian's hosting family favourite Early Man. Food from 5.30pm and Movie from 6.30pm (sunset). I am delighted to fund the free movie in the park programme around the ward to bring families together in local neighbourhoods.

Regards, Nicole.
HELP NAME TWO YERONGA PARKS

The Yeronga RSL is seeking to name a small riverside park at the end of Heritage Close, near the old Rhyndarra Military Hospital as Rigby Place in honour of a  distinguished pioneering family who settled in Shottery St in the 1880s and whose sons served in both WW1 and WW2. The Rigby Family helped found the Yeronga RSL where it stands today.

Our community is also seeking to rename Esplanade Park (a default name for the street) after Ron Goeldner, a master builder, who together with Pat, raised their family on the Esplanade and whose lifetime of volunteer service to the local community through NHW and the YDRA, local schools, Kindys, the RSL and more has enriched our community immeasurably.

You can sign a hard copy of the petition over coming weeks or click  here to sign it online.

REMEMBRANCE DAY 2018

2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. Every year at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, one minutes silence is observed throughout the country in remembrance of those who lost their lives during war.

This year, Tennyson Ward will commemorate Remembrance Day with two local RSL services held by the Stephens RSL and the Sherwood-Indooroopilly RSL.

The Stephens Sub Branch RSL 2018 Remembrance Day service will commence in Yeronga Memorial Park at 10.30am, Sunday, November 11. As part of the WW1 Armistice Centenary events, a public "Remembrance Walk" will be held prior to the Memorial Service along Honour Avenue commencing from the Park Road gates at 9:45am. Along the route, school students will be calling out the names of the 97 servicemen from the Stephens Shire who did not return. All are welcome to join the walk. If your child would like to participate, please contact the Stephens RSL on 0418 797 597 or matt.rowe@pocoecho.com.au.

The Sherwood-Indooroopilly Sub Branch RSL 2018 Remembrance Day service will commence in Graceville Memorial Park at 10.30am, Sunday, November 11. The RSL are also undertaking a march for this special occasion. Assembly will be outside the Graceville train station on Appel St at 10am for a 10:15am march off to Graceville Memorial Park. Everyone is welcome to march.

All are welcome to attend these services to pay their respects to those Australians who lost their lives or suffered during war and armed conflict.

PORTABLE FLASHING SPEED SIGN FOR PARK RD, YERONGA

Council's portable flashing speed sign has been installed on Park Rd, Yeronga, near Yeronga State School.

Park Rd, Yeronga is posted as 40km/h during the school zone hours of 7-9am and 2-4pm. While the sign was previously at this location it collected data for a four month period from 24 February 2017 to 2 July 2017. During school zone hours, 110,937 vehicles (av. 867 per day) passed through the portable speed sign zone. 39,002 vehicles or 35.2% of all drivers were recorded travelling above the posted speed limit. Of the vehicles speeding, 85% were travelling at or below 48.9km/hr. When prompted, 14,655 speeding drivers reduced their speeds by an average of 6.5kms to 42.4km/hr within the speed camera range. This is really not good. Please slow down outside our schools.

The portable flashing speed sign is part of Council's programme to improve road safety around schools and other traffic hotspots. The sign shows a smiley face to vehicles travelling the speed limit and flashes a slow down warning to those speeding. The sign should help to quell speeding vehicles and make the area much safer.

The sign provides Council and the police with reliable information about traffic volumes and speeds. It has been shown to reduce traffic speeds in streets where it has been located to date by up to 10kms per hour.

The sign will stay at this location for approximately 8-10 weeks and will be continuously rotated throughout the ward.

The Brisbane International is being held from 30 December, 2018 to 6 January, 2019. All residential streets within 1km of the stadium will be subject to 1hr parking restrictions, residents and their visitors excepted.

This affects residents in Tennyson, Yeerongpilly and Yeronga who live within the Qld Tennis Centre Parking Area. Each street within the Parking Area is delineated via the newly installed yellow signs under each street sign and the existing signs on major roads. You can also see a map of the precinct here. If you reside within a designated street, you can apply for a permit from my office at Fairfield Gardens Shopping Centre, 180 Fairfield Rd, Fairfield during December. When applying, please bring a copy of the current vehicle registration certificate for each vehicle registered to the property and a rates notice or utility bill.
IT'S MAGPIE SEASON!

Between July and December some of Brisbane's native bird species, particularly Magpies, may become defensive and swoop people who venture too close to their nesting site.

Most magpies and other swooping bird species will accept the presence of people within their territories, however when attacks do occur, they usually take place within a one hundred metre radius around the tree containing the nest.

While Magpies are a nuisance, they are protected under the State Wildlife Legislation (Nature Conservation Act 1992) and therefore, are not moved or harmed by Council. If you notice a Magpie or other bird species is swooping, please let my office know and we can ask Council to erect warning signage at the location. My office can be contacted on 3403 8605 or, after hours, contact the Council Call Centre on 3403 8888.

In the meantime, there are several things you can do to try and discourage magpies from nesting in your yard. Ensure you:

  • do not feed magpies, ensure no scraps of food or rubbish are left lying around
  • remove unnecessary sources of water from the backyard (if magpies are causing a nuisance)
  • do not remove nests or eggs and never touch a young bird. If you are concerned for the safety of the young, phone Council's Native Animal Ambulance on 1300 ANIMAL (1300 264 625)
  • do not disturb the birds when there are fledglings in the nest
  • do not throw objects at the bird or destroy the nest as this will increase their defence efforts
