 Hi
everyone,
As the year draws to a close, I want to thank everyone for their feedback and ideas throughout the
year. My job is to listen and fight for our local community and whilst we don't always win, it's a role
that I love doing. We are so lucky to live in a beautiful part of the world and the best part of Brisbane.
It's been a challenging and rewarding year in equal measures, with steady forward progress being made
on some important issues in the community with Council. In particular, the 40km school safety zone on
Ipswich Rd at Mary Mac, a new and upgraded dog park at Yeronga Memorial Park and a new playground and
pathway lighting at Annerley have been highlights.
The fight, however, continues to make Ipswich Rd and Venner Rd safer for pedestrians and cyclists. Despite
being the third most dangerous road for pedestrians in Brisbane and the highest outside the CBD - a terrible
statistic - Council refuses to take action to reduce the speed limit through Annerley Junction. As part
of its Move Safe pedestrian survey response, Council has announced 40km along main roads including at
Sunnybank, Stones Corner and Corinda, all with lower pedestrian injury rates than Annerley. It's wrong
and I said so clearly at Council on Tuesday. This is a fight I will be taking up again in 2019 and thank
you to all the residents who are part of the campaign.
There's so much more to do and I Iook forward to working with you in 2019 to make our local community
an even better place to live and work. Best wishes for a safe and joyous Christmas with your family and
friends. I hope to see you at one of the wonderful Christmas events below.
Regards, Nicole.
Ps. A big thank you to Yeronga Meals on Wheels volunteers who are giving up their time on
Christmas day to deliver a hot meal to the elderly members of our community.
NEW
SHELTER FOR FAIRFIELD DOG OFF LEASH AREA
A brand new
shelter and seats will be installed in the Fairfield Park Dog Off Leash Area mid-next month. Works include
a new 4x4m shelter, three bench seats and connecting concrete footpath and will be located next to the
Fairfield Rd entrance to the off leash area. Other minor works will be undertaken to the gate.
The new shelter and seating will provide a much-needed shaded rest area for users of the popular
dog park.
I am delighted to fund these works from the Tennyson
Ward Footpath and Parks Trust Funds.
SHADE
SAIL FOR LEYSHON PARK, YERONGA
In coming months, Council will install a new shade sail at the playground in Leyshon Park, Yeronga (opposite
William Pde) to replace shade provided by the trees lost in the 2014 super-cell storm. This will be a
welcome addition on hot days and will provide children and their minders with much-needed shelter from
the hot Queensland sun.
Work should begin early next year. I am
still working on additional trees for the park, but, as the land is an old top site, Council is not planting
trees in contaminated areas any longer.
