MESSAGE FROM NICOLE
Hi everyone,

Towards the end of January the long serving Presentation Sister's based in the Corinda Graceville Catholic Parish at Graceville are being moved to a new home with other nuns in Herston. We thank all the sisters who have served our local community over many years, including Sisters Annette, Marion and Cyprian. In particular, I want to acknowledge the tireless work of Sister Cyprian, known to all as Sister Cyp. Over the past 20 years she has worked quietly behind the scenes to bring comfort and kindness to the elderly, particularly at Canossa, to those in need through St Vincent De Paul and the Catholic Women's League, and in the education of young students at Joey's and CTK. Her sense of humour, passion for social justice, faith and kindness will be missed by our community but never forgotten.

Let's make her last Christmas in the local community she loves so much more joyous. Send her a Christmas card or note to Sister Cyprian, Corinda Graceville Catholic Parish, 18 Clewley St, Corinda 4075.

As the year draws to a close I want to thank everyone for their feedback and ideas. My job is to listen and fight for our local community and whilst we don't always win, it's a role that I love doing. We are so lucky to live in a beautiful part of the world and the best part of Brisbane. It's been a challenging and rewarding year in equal measures, with steady forward progress being made on some important issues in the community with Council. In particular, additional funding for the Sherwood Arboretum, a new pedestrian refuge for Graceville SS students, the 40km school safety zone on Ipswich Rd at Mary Mac and a new playground and pathway lighting at Annerley have been highlights.

There's so much more to do and I Iook forward to working with you in 2019 to make our local community an even better place to live and work. Best wishes for a safe and joyous Christmas with your family and friends.

Regards, Nicole.
GRACEVILLE STATE SCHOOL SAFE TRAVELS

After six years of petitions, meetings, letters and more, Council has finally agreed to install a pedestrian safety refuge at the intersection of Acacia and Richardson Sts, Graceville in coming months. Council agreed to my suggestion to move the funds for the refuge that won't be going ahead in Sherwood to Graceville. HOORAY!

The refuge will provide a safe crossing point at this busy intersection for Graceville SS students, Kindy families and residents and visitors accessing the park and netball courts.

A huge thank you must go to Jo Richards, parent co-ordinator for the Graceville Active School Travel Committee, who has been a tireless advocate for many years for safe travels to school. Also a big thank you to Chris Hansen, current president of Graceville SS P&C, and Derek Brown, immediate past president, who wrote and attended meetings with the Lord Mayor to put the School's case forward. Thank you for speaking up for our community.

We are still after two more refuges - at the rear of the School on Park Rd, near White St, and Park Rd and Verney Rd and I am working with State Member, Mark Bailey, to have the safe crossing points funded from a new joint Council/ State Government programme.

Graceville is an amazing Active Travel School and I look forward to working with them again in 2019, together with CTK and Sherwood SS who also join the AST programme.

SHERWOOD RD REFUGE

Thank you to all residents, Sherwood Police, businesses and St David's who provided feedback and attended meeting with me to discuss the location of a pedestrian refuge on Sherwood Rd, near Egmont St, Sherwood.

This has been a complicated project with the loss of parking for residents and businesses and the narrowing of lane width around the refuge raised consistently as problems. Option 1, the location immediately west of  Egmont St, was the most popular suggestion, but strongly opposed by businesses and residents who were directly impacted.

In discussions with Council about alternate options, we have reached a compromise. The intersection of Jerrold St and Sherwood Rd, Sherwood will be listed for traffic lights, including a green walk signal. The refuge will not be going ahead at this time. This will be the safest option for pedestrians who will be given the ability to cross under a protected green walk signal. As traffic signals are very expensive - depending on the infrastructure needed, they can be $250,000 or a lot more - they will be listed for funding in a future Council Budget. This is not ideal, but Council cannot continue to ignore the massive congestion problems along Oxley Rd forever. Council will look at these news lights in conjunction with any improvements at Oxley Rd and Sherwood Rd to ensure a coordinated outcome.

Many residents also spoke with me about the lack of footpath to the Oxley Common and Markets. This has been my number one shared pathway project in the Tennyson Ward local Budget submission for the past 11 years. It's crazy to think that Council wants to spend $100m on improving access to Oxley Creek, but for those residents who live closest, you cannot walk or ride there safely. I will keep at Council and the Oxley Creek Transformation Project Taskforce about funding for this important pathway project.

CORINDA SHOPPING PRECINCT 40KM ZONE

Council recently announced that, as part of the city-wide Move Safe pedestrian safety survey, that three busy shopping precincts on main roads would have their speed limit reduced from 60km to 40km at Sunnybank, Stones Corner and Corinda. This is a very new initiative, as normally 40km is only allowed outside schools and on streets with traffic calming.

Council proposes to make a 700m section of Oxley Rd, between Hassall St, Corinda and the low rail Bridge, a 40km zone, reducing the speed from the current 60km. New signage and one road marking will be installed in early 2019.

A speed limit of 40km may come as a shock to some residents, outside peak hour where the ave speed is already less than 40kms, but the crash history for the city sadly shows a very high six pedestrian crashes through the shopping precinct, the eighth highest in the City. These include the following car v pedestrian accidents:

  • one on Oxley Rd at Mayhew St;
  • two on the signalised crossing at Nelson St;
  • two at the refuge near Donaldson St; and
  • one on Oxley Rd at Hassall St.

Those hit were vulnerable people including school students, children and the elderly. In particular, at last count in 2013, more than 1200 pedestrians crossed at Nelson St, including a high number of Corinda SHS students and it would be much higher now given the recent development spurt and growth at the school.

I appreciate it is a significant change and I hope all drivers will give the new speed limit a fair go once it commences in 2019. Lower speed limits give drivers more time to make decisions and have been shown to reduce the likelihood of crashes and reduce the severity of injuries.

Corinda is a fabulous local precinct and I want everyone who visits the shops, churches, RSL, restaurants, library, school, rail station and services to be safe, whether on foot or in the car.

The upgrade will see replacement of the current swings with three new ones, including a toddler seat with strap and separate basket seat, as well as the installation of an additional shade sail over the existing net structure, which is currently uncovered.

These will be welcome additions to the playground and will provide more play space for children, while keeping the area shaded all year round.

The shade sail will be installed this month, while the new swings will be installed in January, weather permitting.

Council is rolling out its $3.2 million road safety initiative at traffic and accident hotspots.

The newest sign, just prior to the Graceville shopping precinct in the northbound lane of Honour Ave, Graceville has now been installed and flashes a slow down message combined with pedestrian warning signage for drivers travelling towards the shopping precinct.

This site has been chosen based on strong community feedback about speeding and to improve safety and awareness on approach to the busy shopping precinct and train station.

Next year, Queensland Urban Utilities (QUU) will undertake upgrades to the existing sewer line running along Appel St and Chelmer St E, Chelmer, between Plumridge St and Oxley Rd. QUU will duplicate the current line to improve capacity and reduce sewer backflows in the area. Work is scheduled to begin in approximately April-March, 2019, weather permitting.

Witton Barracks Park

Interim improvement works are now complete at the Witton Barracks site, on the Indooroopilly side of the Walter Taylor Bridge. Works completed include:

  • installation of a picnic shelter and seating within the open space;
  • refurbishment works to five historic buildings, including repairing and painting eaves, gutters, joinery and verandas;
  • replacement of roofs on the HQ building and Transport shed;
  • removal of external graffiti from all heritage buildings;
  • removal of timber fencing, garage, disused BBQ and an underground storage tank; and
  • removal of one tree (that was damaging a cell block), tree trimming and shrub removal.

The final concept plan for the Witton Barracks site has not yet been finalised, but the interim works will allow the public to utilise the space in the meantime. You can find out more information on the project and register for updates at Council's website here
