MESSAGE FROM NICOLE

Hi everyone,

I hope you had an enjoyable Christmas and New Year with your family and friends.

If you are still on holidays there are some great free events on over the next week at our libraries, parks and on the Australia Day long weekend. Join me for an Australia Day eve screening of the Australian classic Strictly Ballroom on the 25th at Fairfield from 6:30pm and enjoy a sausage sizzle to support the Kurilpa Scouts from 5:30pm. On the 26th the Oxley Australia Day Pool Party kicks off at 12 noon with a giant pool plus a great range of free rides and activities for the kids and will culminate with fireworks at 7pm.

Thank you to everyone who nominated a volunteer as part of our Local Heroes Awards. All are welcome to attend the ceremony at the Oxley Bowls Club at 6pm to recognise those tireless volunteers who work behind the scenes to make our community great.

Happy New Year, Nicole.

 TAYLOR BRIDGE RESERVE WORKS ZONE

The Quirk Administration has decided to use the Taylor Bridge Reserve, both sides of the road, as a works site for the Indooroopilly Bikeway project.

Whilst the Bikeway project is welcome, as its final design now includes a connection to the Southside, I fear this will cause even more disruption to local traffic using Honour Avenue and Wharf Street.

A works site and temporary pontoon will be established under the Bridge to facilitate people, materials and equipment for the project. Apparently, Council cannot find another suitable location on the Northside?

I have repeatedly called on Council and the Deputy Mayor to ensure the pontoon can be permanently kept. Residents will recall that the old public pontoon was washed away in the January 2011 floods and despite petitions and requests, Council refused to replace the pontoon saying the bank was too unstable. Apparently it's fine though now to build a pontoon to facilitate a major project in Indooroopilly. The hypocrisy of this Council at times is staggering.

It's my view that if we have to suffer a year of noise and traffic disruption there should be some benefit for our community once the project is complete. A pontoon to replace the one lost would be a good start.

I'm also calling on Council to ensure the steps on Wharf Street near Queenscroft Street are removed and replaced with a ramp. Steps and bikes don't mix and a safe off road pathway to Jack Pesch Bridge and the new Indooroopilly Bikeway is critical. Council is investing around $100m in bikeways this term but not a cent of this in Tennyson Ward. Stage 1 of the project was $8.5m and this will now increase significantly to include Stage 2 so part of this should be used to replace the steps leading to the Bikeway on the southside as part of the project budget.

The project is expected to take about a year. Further details about the project are noted below in the development application.

I have attached a link to the development application here, which provides more information on the proposed work site and an opportunity to have your say. I encourage you to make a submission and provide your feedback to Council.

PARK LIGHTING UPGRADES

Over coming months, Council will undertake upgrades to existing lighting infrastructure in parks and along bikeways throughout the City with more energy efficient LED lighting, which reduces energy consumption by up to 60%. Approximately 4000 lights across the City will be upgraded including those in the following Tennyson Ward parks:

  • Yeronga Memorial Park, Yeronga
  • Brisbane Corso Park, Fairfield
  • Dunlop Park, Corinda
  • Faulkner Park, Graceville
  • Francis Lookout Park, Corinda
  • Graceville Riverside Parklands, Graceville
  • Lagonda St Park, Annerley
  • Nosworthy Park, Corinda
  • Strickland Tce Park, Sherwood

Some installation works have already commenced in Lagonda/Vallely St Parks, Annerley, Yeronga Memorial Park and Brisbane Corso Park, Fairfield. This completes the major new and upgraded lighting project in Annerley, as part of the $190,000 park upgrade.

Works will be undertaken during business hours between now and the end of January 2019, weather permitting. Installation of an LED light can take up to one hour and can include the use of an elevated work platform and vehicles with flashing lights and reversing beepers.

Pedestrians and cyclists may experience minor detours or delays when travelling through a park or bikeway during the installation. Where necessary, traffic controllers will be on-site to assist pedestrians and cyclists to safely move through the work area.

ENERGEX TREE REPLACEMENT PROJECT

Starting this month, Energex will begin replacement of unsuitable tree species under powerlines in the suburbs of Chelmer, Graceville, Sherwood and Tennyson. Council is assisting Energex with the project. Works will involve the removal of species that could potentially interfere with and damage powerlines and interrupt electricity supply and replacement of them with a more suitable species.

Residents should be notified next week if a tree on their frontage is affected. Each tree chosen for removal will be marked with an orange 'R' and will be replaced with a powerline friendly species. An orange dot will be marked on the footpath to dictate the location of the new tree, which will generally be a native species, but will depend on the location and streetscape.

Tree numbers include:

  • Chelmer - 31
  • Graceville - 77
  • Sherwood - 23
  • Tennyson - 9

Residents can opt to keep the tree on their frontage by contacting my office on 3403 8605 or Council's 24/7 Call Centre on 3403 8888. Please contact my office if you are interested in the specific locations of any tree removals/replacements.

PORTABLE FLASHING SPEED SIGN LOCATIONS

A number of Council's portable flashing speed (SAM) signs are currently placed around the ward and flash a slow down message to speeding vehicles passing them. The portable flashing speed signs are a part of Council's programme to improve road safety around schools and other traffic hotspots. The signs show a smiley face to vehicles travelling the speed limit and flashes a slow down warning to those speeding and help to quell speeding vehicles and make the area much safer.

The signs are currently located in the following areas:

  • Park Rd, Yeronga, near Yeronga State School - northbound
  • Clewley St, Corinda, near St Joseph's Primary School eastbound
  • Oxley Rd, Corinda, south of Hughes La - northbound
  • Seventeen Mile Rocks Rd, Oxley, outside 103 - eastbound
  • Hyde Rd, Yeronga, on approach to Cansdale St - eastbound

The signs provide Council and the police with reliable information about traffic volumes and speeds and have been shown to reduce traffic speeds in streets where it has been located to date by up to 10kms per hour. Once installed the signs generally stay at each location for approximately 8-10 weeks and are continuously rotated throughout the ward.

DONATE TO COMMUNITY GROUPS THROUGH THE CONTAINER REFUND SCHEME

From November 2018, The State Government began the Container Refund Scheme, offering a 10 cent refund on eligible empty drink containers returned to a participating container refund point.

You can now help the environment and a local school, community group or charity, by donating your container refund. Each group will have their own scheme ID, which can be provided upon returning containers to a refund point.

Queensland's recycling rate is currently one of the lowest in Australia, sitting at around 44%. The introduction of a state-wide scheme will give people an incentive to collect and return containers for recycling, in exchange for a refund payment.

You can find out more about the scheme here, as well as a list of locations here.

Below are just some of the local community groups participating in the scheme:

  • South Rugby Union Club Scheme ID: C10026072
  • Oxley Creek Catchment Association Scheme ID: C10054991
  • Yeronga Community Centre Scheme ID: C10054318
  • Kurilpa Scouts Scheme ID: C10003762

If you would like to register your school, community group or charity for the refund scheme, visit Containers for Change here.
